Investigators in the US city of Baltimore have recovered the data recorder from the container ship that crashed into a major road bridge, causing it to collapse.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
It's hoped it will help explain what caused the accident, as the coastguard announced its mission had moved from the rescue to the recovery phase.

i understand people feel strongly about a tragedy like this, but saying that you'll 'learn from the mistakes made' about the bridge is unnecessary - a massive ship crashed into it, i really doubt anyone would expect it to survive. it seems more important to ask why the construction workers were on it if they were aware that the freighter was out of control and incoming.
@deborahhenderson149
@deborahhenderson149 Месяц назад
The construction workers had no idea there was a problem with the Dali. If you listen to the police officer requesting that all traffic be halted from crossing the bridge from the north and south. Then he asks if someone can contact the foreman of the construction team to alert them but it was too late because the collision then occurred.
@nataliabogach6580
@nataliabogach6580 Месяц назад
I wonder if the captain of the ship knew the height of the ship and checked it with the height of the bridge? Maybe he thought he was riding in a cart? After all, all the parameters of the bridge must be known for all ships passing on the river! It's definitely the ship's captain's fault!

Safety law works in precedent. A suspension Bridge wouldn't have failed the same way, so the likelihood is that they are more likely to be built in future as opposed to these cheaper girder bridges

You MUST ask what can be learned. That’s the only way we prevent accidents like these…. There possibly lots that could be done, different bridge designs, better protection of key parts, warning systems. We owe it to those who lost their lives.

@DavidJBradshaw
@DavidJBradshaw Месяц назад
Modern bridges have protective bases built around the base of the pilers, so that any out of control ship cannot get close enough to cause damage. Such structures were made mandatory after the very similar 1980 accident in Florida. The city had had 44 years to upgrade this bridge to protect it from just such an accident and bring it up to modern safety standards, but it seems preferred to ignore the risk.

@DavidJBradshaw
@DavidJBradshaw Месяц назад
Given that this bridge was almost the same design as the Florida bridge that came down in 1980 after a ship hit it, the city really needs to explain why this bridge had not had protective barriers built around the base in the last 44 years. This type of accident was not just predictable, it had happened before and modern bridge standards require ship protection barriers.

This modern-day, most merchants' ships are bigger and bigger together with faster speeds to catch up with the demand of commercial pressure. Not to mention the short time in port stay which is some machinery needed for maintenance. Container ships and car carriers are the most vulnerable due to their lack of time to do maintenance and the crew haven't enough rest hours. Dang, it's a nightmare.

This has been an accident waiting to happen for many years. I doubt any similar structure could be built to withstand the impact of a large freight vessel. The obvious answer, which should have been implemented from the outset, is require all vessels over a certain tonnage to be taken into and out of the harbour controlled by large tugs.

Is it possible this shipping company much like the evergreen company was using this port for child trafficking purposes that is a global problem? Could it be good forces have orchestrated this to stop the global trafficking ring ?

Looks suspiciously like a intented accident. Why? 1. The ship traveled a straight line until first blackout. 2. first blackout 3. after first repower motors go full throttle, ships start steering starboard (did they go full throttle on the front navigation propellers too?) 4. second blackout, doesn't affect throttle as seen on exhaust 5. shortly (in real time maybe 15-20 sec) before impact, ship stops steering after pillar was set as target and motor shuts off (look at the exhaust suddenly shutting off) 6. slight countersteer before impact (making sure pillar gets hit?) using front navigation propellers Questions: 1. Can wind affect ships rotation, it should press on ships whole length and only translate the ship slightly, not rotate this much and fast (consider the mass) 2. Why steering into the bridge as motors were online again? They shouldn't had moved the rudder at all. No anchor / anchor drop can be seen on starboard side which could explain the steer 3. Why not go full throttle straight ahead through the bridge? Video is speed up but in real time crew should had have time for rational decision 4. Why stopping motors after target was set? One might think that crew would go on full throttle to brake the ship further
