The theme of Kyoto Chishin this time is HOSOKAWA HIDEAKI, a Bamboo craftsman.
He uses the traditional bamboo basket-making technique passed down in Kyoto at his bamboo workshop KISETSU in Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto to create modern and high-quality bamboo basket bags.
HOSOKAWA originally worked for a printing company, but decided to retire when he was 31 years old.
After that, I learned bamboo craft techniques at the Kyoto Traditional Crafts College (currently a university).
His bamboo basket bags, which are a collection of his talent and techniques, can be worn not only with kimonos but also with ordinary clothes regardless of the season, and are so popular that people wait half a year to buy them.
Furthermore, in 2018, he received the Prime Minister's Award, which is given to the best work at the "National Traditional Crafts Public Contest".
HOSOKAWA quit his job at the age of 31 and started his career as a craftsman.
Seeking new possibilities for bamboo crafts, he is challenging himself to create works in collaboration with Kiyomizu ware potters.
