(The above affiliate link helps support our channel too, so thanks 😃)
We got our hands on a Bambu Lab X1 Carbon back in December and wanted to share our first impressions of it with you. There are already a million unboxing videos out there so instead we wanted to show you our unscripted, genuine reaction to unboxing this printer for the first time and setting it up.
The first thing we wanted to do with the ‪@BambuLab‬ was compare it to our old ‘go to’ printer - the Prusa MK3s. We have been in love with Prusa’s since we first got our hands on them, with multiple MK3s’ to our name and a Prusa Mini… but this new printer by Bambulab could be about to end that love affair.
If you are about to purchase a Bambu Lab printer, or are on the fence, we hope our genuine reactions to this printer have helped your decision.

It’s hard not to agree with you Rick! Our Prusa’s have been brilliant over the years but the Bambu Lab has just made 3D printing (especially prototyping designs) insanely easy! I like to tinker with printers as much as the next person, but knowing that I can just hit print, and in a fraction of the time have a print done reliably is so valuable! Thanks for the comment and support ❤️

I have a V400 since November and it’s been a job on its own to crank out quality product prototypes. So much tinkering to get a decent result. I just got an email from Bambulab for the payment of my X1C AMS. Still in doubt if I should, but being able to just print and go back to designing again is very appealing. Should I hit pay?

@@WouterZtube I was in the same vote as you today. When I received the final bill today with an added 400 euro tax, Ouch! My Mega X does a good job but is not in the same class as the X1C. This was a lot of money for just a hobby, I am 71 now, But I love this stuff. But being an old Computer Tec, I have learned it is better to get more than you need and not have to worry about upgrading in the future. which I now know will cost you more for less in the long run. So I paid for mine today. They said I should get it by the end of this month. so a week, hopefully. I have only ever printed PLA, but now I am sure I can try other filaments without problems. I saw a german video where the guy was using PETG as his final 3 layers on his supports. Beautiful; no problems removing the supports in a minute or two. but you need to have the AMS, and PETG is cheap. I have a 20-hour of print that just does not seem worth the effort to remove the supports. Good luck with your choice.

Good video, keep making good videos like this and I am sure your channel will grow. It would be interesting to hear your views and comments using multi colours. As a single colour printer the Bambu Lab X1 is by far the best printer out there but from what I can gather it lets itself down when doing multi coloured prints in both wastage and print time. I do plan on getting myself one in a few months as well as the Prusa XL, and using the Bambu for only single coloured prints. Keep up the good work.
@playconveyor
@playconveyor Год назад
Thanks, that’s great to hear! The multicolour is a bit of a double edged sword, it makes our prints look amazing, and for the designs we release it really makes them come to life, but…. Like you said the print time and filament wastage isn’t ideal; a single colour print can go from 3 hours to 19 hours easily with a few bits coloured in Bambu Studio - that also ends up using around 500g of filament compared to 80g. Being part time designers the filament costs can really hit us too! The Prusa XL is going to be a very interesting printer… and hopefully give some competition back to Bambu Lab, competition in the industry is such a great thing… pushes everything forward!
@shufflex704
@shufflex704 Год назад
@@playconveyor Hopefully the Prusa XL will be a good starting point for companies designing new printers, and in a few years all printers will be multicolour capable. I feel we are not that far away regards the technology, however, the price point of the Prusa XL with 5 "Nextruders" will prove to be prohibitive for many. With a bit of luck the likes of Creality will be popping out clones and make them affordable to the masses, that in turn should push Prusa and Bambu to refine the technology. The future looks good due to Bambu entering the marketplace I only hope they don't just sit back and count the money from the sales. As I have already stated in my original post I think they have an amazing printer, but we all thought that with the Ender 3.
@cy-one
@cy-one Год назад
@@shufflex704 As for using the AMS... As playconveyor has mentioned, the AMS is rather wasteful in time and filament. But! it works. It works _very_ well. And the AMS has some characteristics very exclusive to it: - It mostly just works, and both from my own experience and other's online: Better than the Prusa-equivalent, where it seems people are spending more time getting it to work than printing with it. - It's chainable, you can chain _4_ AMS together to get up to 16 different filaments. - It's affordable. The AMS costs ~330€ (before tax). A Prusa MMU-Kit(!) costs 300€ and needs to be assembled, doesn't have a track-record of actually just working and isn't chainable. The Palette 2 costs 700€ and isn't chainable at all.
@mascot4950
@mascot4950 Год назад
I wouldn't dream of doing some of the multicolor prints I see people do, where seemingly every layer has multiple colors. But I do love the ease at which I can do a color switch or two without having to actually do anything after starting the print. Even if it somehow didn't even support that, I would still have loved the AMS for how easy it makes it to select/load/unload filament. I've been considering adding more AMS units to be able to load all the rolls I might regularly want to use, but I have some space issues and the cost of extra AMS units is... a thing.
@shufflex704
@shufflex704 Год назад
@@mascot4950 I really like coloured prints but they have always seemed far too complicated to do, at least they are for me (69 years old and I still see the humble calculator as a scientific marvel). I will get myself a Bambu Lab X! carbon and will get some good use out of it. I am somewhat struggling with what machine/printer I need for coloured prints, my main problem is that I would be making mostly single items and that will produce as much waste as doing multiple items (of the same). Purging and purge towers have always been an acceptable thing when doing coloured prints and has always been a complicated thing to get "Just" right, however the difficulty has now all changed with the introduction of the Bambu and the AMS. If there was considerably less waste I would not hesitate to get more AMS units. Prusa XL seem to of, on paper at least, found a solution to the waste and as such I am very tempted to have that as well. In fact up until a couple of days ago I was definitely going down that road until I stumbled upon this www.xyzprinting.com/en-GB/product/partpro200-xTCS That has really rocked the boat. I have plenty of time to make up my mind though

As a hobby user, I disagree. I mean, not saying the BL printers aren't expensive, but that's mostly because they don't sell any dirt cheap stripped down printers. Comparing to similarly priced competition, they seem quite reasonable. My big argument for the Bambu printers is that they make _printing_ the hobby as opposed to _the printer_. A person who just wants to print stuff could easily bounce right off the hobby if they try to get a pleasant experience out of a £200 printer.

Like many others I've considered buying a Bambu as well. But I do like to do my research before I spend this amount of money. And at present I've landed on not getting one because of a few (for me) dealbreakers with the Bambus. But I thought I'd take a look at your video since it popped up in my feed to see if it delivered on its "promise" of telling me if I should buy one after all. Because maybe there's something about it I've overlooked, or Bambu has changed, that would make it a viable alternative for me after all? Unfortunately, in that regard, I think your title is somewhat misleading. To me it implied that this video would be a _review,_ updated with newer information than was available around launch. But OK, fair enough, I guess I took the bait. But just so you know, clickbait titles are for me, and many others, enough to make us NOT click the subscribe button. So that's something you might want to take into considderation for future videos. Also as I said in the beginning; for me, there are dealbreakers with these machines. And before I realised that this wasn't actually a review, I was a bit disapointed to see you not mentioning any of them. And as I see some in the comments actually on the fence. I thought I'd share: Dealbreaker #1: Noise level. This is NOT a printer for people with one bed apartments to put it like that. Well, unless you like to wear noice cancelling headphones at all times when printing. I don't have a shed, but I do have a glassed balcony. Unfortunately I can't really justify wasting that much heating on just a printer now when electricity is as expensive as it is. Dealbreaker #2: Bambu's locked down "ecosystem" with all proprietary parts. Which also leads to: Dealbreaker #3: Customer Service and Serviceability. Bambu does not trust their customers with much more than changing hotend and clearing a clog. For a somewhat good reason as the RU-vidr, "Nathan Builds Robots" just experienced: The printers simply aren't serviceable by the consumer. He got a printer with a rattling noise in one of the bearings and asked them to send a new bearing for him to swap out himself. But was told he didn't have to "worry about it". He insited on having it changed though, and as it turned out; what should have, and would have, been a very simple fix on almost every other 3D printer on the market. In Bambu's ecosystem, instead prompted a need to return the printer to the manufacturer. Dealbreaker #4: Buildquality. The first unboxing I saw was a guy who received a sample that had the fan on the inside come loose during transportation. The reason? It was fixed to the inside wall with double sided tape! The fan was mounted with TAPE on a 1500 USD printer! And referring back to NBR's brush with Bambu's QC; it led to him discovering that Bambu has used GLUE to afix the sidepanel on the P1P. There are also a ton of people complaining about issues and DOA'ed Bambu printers all over the Internet. Another example is the RU-vidr, "3DMusketeers" who has had to run his printfarm basically without his Bambu for over a month on account of him receiving a lemon. Dealbreaker #5: Longevity and Closed source software and hardware. These printers are actively trying to shake themselves to pieces. With almost no customer serviceable parts and everything locked down. These printers are all destined for the landfill sooner than open-source printers. (This is one of the issues I hope Bambu will do something about, like AnkerMake just announced with their M5 printer). Dealbreaker #6: Filament waste during multicolour printing. This will off course vary from model to model. But worst case I've seen I think was around 5x the filament used as the weight of the finished print. And 2-3x worse than a Prusa using an MMU2. Finally; Not a dealbreaker as such: But the X1C isn't actually faster than the cheaper FLSUN V400 (check 247printing's video). One might get the impression it's faster from watching the Bambu shaking like a washing machine during the spin cycle. But when timed, the V400 actually wins. Making the Bambus actually just an alternative for people who needs fast multicolour printing and doesn't care about noise, material waste, bad service and serviceability, and the huge price tag. Well... IMHO... :P

Thanks for taking the time to comment and watch the video, we are a new channel and feedback like this is really important to get so we can make our next video even better and give you all what you want. We really wanted to do the video from our point of view, and so far we have been lucky enough not to experience the issues you mentioned above with our Bambu Lab, we are genuinely over the moon with it and for what we use the printers for it has been a game changer (prototyping at speed, full colour versions of our designs etc). That said, the issues you've highlighted are really great points, and we have seen some of these mentioned by others on social media platforms... I really do hope Bambu Lab address them... I think dealbreaker 2 is the one that concerns me most. 3D printers are definitely a labour of love at time, and we have constantly tinkered and 'fixed' our Prusa's in the past, which is fairly easy, and sometimes a joy to do... but just looking at the how the Bambu Lab is put together concerns me from a service POV, I mean, where do you start? When the day comes, we will certainly do a video about it, and if there is one thing that I can be certain about in 3D printing, its that the day will come when I need to dismantle this thing. We are about to start work on another video for the Bambu Lab AMS, if this one didn't quite do it for you, hopefully you give us another chance and the next one will :P

@@playconveyor I'll be sure to check it out. :) I think the X2, P2P and AMS2 or whatever they end up naming the next generation will be very interesting. Bambu Labs are very likely using all the data they receive about their printers failing now to take action and improve the designs so that they next time put fewer lemons on the market, and the printers become more durable. I do unfortunately fear that the massive success Bambu Labs has had with this first generation of products might be interpreted by them as consumers just not caring about Bambu Labs sticking to a closed-source philosophy. I mean, they're seemingly correct though. But there's always a chance they might wake up and realize a way of getting the benefits of open source to outweigh the negatives and decide to change. If they do, and also manage to get the noise level down, I'll probably be first in line for an X2C. 😁 (But that's also partly because I live in Norway, and products like these have a 5 year "warranty" by law here. So the repairability won't be my problem the first 5 years of the printers life. 😅) I do love print-in-place and look forward to seeing future models on you Cults page. ☺

As an X1C owner I agree with most of what you mention, with the lifespan of the non serviceable components being my biggest worry. I haven't had any of the problems some people have had, and I got the early bird Kickstarter deal, so I paid €850 I think, which is obviously a much better deal. Also, I don't find it super noisy. Its roughly the same volume as the Qidi X-plus I had before, but it takes up half the desk space and produces much better quality prints in a fifth of the time. It also worked straight out of the box. As for multi material waste, I always account for the filament purging when I design the prints, so I've produced only about 50g of total waste after 9 months of printing, which is far less than from my failed test designs.

100% agree with all your points. These people are suckers that drink the Kool-Aid. The only thing special about these machines is that they come ready to go. These people think they're like time machines with flux capacitors. Anyone with basic skills could build a Voron, and cheaper. If people went on Google and researched they would hear about the problems. You only find influencers and early adopters on RU-vid now.

short answer: NO. the new qidi max and the new creality are both the same speed with a bigger buildplate, enclosure heating and far less expensive. bambu had its chance and missed it.

Although the Bambu Lab printer is great at printing fast I would avoid the AMS as it is a poorly designed unit that causes more problems than it is worth, wasting filament and unless you spend time and money on it is not fit for purpose unless using Bambu filament. Do not waste your money.

You’ve got some really valid points about the AMS, I love it for the convenience of swapping colours remotely, but it has a lot of issues… cardboard spools being the biggest! The motors also jam on occasion which is MEGA frustrating on an overnight print!

It is worth mentioning the NEGATIVE point of Bambu lab, and it is that an Internet process is always needed since the slicer is made in China, This consequence is that you cannot work without the Internet and it will take much longer to get the final STL to be able to print. It is also worth mentioning that yesterday CREALITY announced its new K1 printer, with a larger 300x300x300 bed. It would be necessary to buy them, since the prices are very even. BambuLab has a very important function and that is to have the filament pack to print in various colors without external software, that's 10. But not all that glitters is gold. Your audios on the rotated phone are heard on only one speaker. When you are at the desk sitting. For your next videos, greetings from Spain.

Thanks for the comment, we had issues with the audio, which are fixed in our new video 😁 From the look of things for us, the Bambu still has more features than the K1, and although the slicer uses internet, it’s a really good hit of software… would love to get our hands on the K1 to test!
