We test and review the Bambu Lab X1-Carbon 3D printer! Since its release last year, it's shaken up the FDM 3D printing world with its fast CoreXY printing capabilities, hands-off accessibility, and convenient features like remote monitoring and automated filament switching. Great but SCREAMS "at any point we can brick this" with all the tech jammed in.. From the RFID/NFC readers for spools (and they have their own chipped spools - these are NOT BASIC AND HARD TO CRACK, think about why that is..), cloud stuff, proprietary versions of open source software, etc. Is just ripe for holding people hostage... They could go out of business, get bought out, decide to force subscriptions for use, make it so you can't use any filament but theirs etc etc. Oh and if something breaks or was dead on arrival, they only send parts and it's apparently a massive pain to fix and repair. My big gripe is for businesses/industry with proprietary design going on - we CANNOT use your cloud. Half or more our stuff isn't even on internet-capable networks (local only) to prevent cyber security issues and potential accidental leaks. That being said, there are a lot of great features and capabilities packed into these at an obtainable-by-consumers and hobbyist price range.. something that has been much needed in FDM printing for awhile. To the over trusting: remember all the promises Oculus/Facebook made about not requiring FB accounts.. unless it's in some legally binding documents, you should hope for the best and expect extortion..

You can also load up the AMS with the same filament and have the AMS auto switch to the next roll if one runs out.

It will at some point but that's life in 2023. You have very few non cloud subscription models to choose from if you're hell bent on that.

Input Shaping is pretty amazing… it's mathemagical! We added ZV Input Shaping to Marlin in version 2.1.2 and there will be more advanced Input Shaping included in Marlin 2.1.3. This means that even inexpensive machines like the Ender-3 can get smoother prints at higher speeds without any additional hardware, just by updating the firmware. The way Input Shaping works is pretty cool. Basically, every impulse that moves an axis generates ringing in the machine frame with a regular period. So all we have to do is time half of the impulses so that they occur at just the right moment to catch that frequency wave on the return swing, and it effectively deadens the vibration. I'm working on the input shaping code every day so I know it intimately, and yet it still seems like magic. And truly, it is!

do you know is input shaping a passive automatic ability written in the actual firmware of a printer or is it something you would have to turn on in the settings? I'm on a 2.1.3 now from Risc and I don't see anything like that.

I love my x1c. Random unexplained failures are exceedingly rare unlike my ender 3. The machine feels like a tool. If I want to have fun with a printer I fire up my ender 3. If I just want to print a part not have to worry about it (as long as support settings are correct) the x1c is hard to beat.

First few months my ender 3 s1 pro gave me headaches but I enjoy tinkering and modifying 3d printers. The core problem was bed is warped X1C is just butter right out of the box.

For me, having to mess around with a printer to get it to work would take the fun right out of it, hence why I've never made the leap to get one. Seeing Bambu Labs after seeing someone mention their current sale, has really made me realize printers are finally starting to be consumer friendly, and I'm now considering buying my first printer from them. I just want to print to get the things done I plan on doing, and not tinker.

if you have zero experience in 3D printing i wouldn't go with a bambu lab, they have notoriously terrible customer support, and alot of non reviewers have had to have paypal escalate their cases to either get refunds, or help fixing their issues. sadly this is kind of universal with chinese 3D printing brands, some worse than others. unfortunately only 3D printer manufacturer that actually has dependable customer service is Prusa, and sadly you pay dearly for that luxury

I obviously can't speak for everyone, but as an owner of two X1Cs for several months now, and knowing several other people/companies using them, we've all had the completely opposite experience. No offense to you personally, but aside from inevitable outlier cases, this just sounds like a typical case of noise coming from a loud minority of folks. They've been extremely fast to respond to any of my questions or issues, and have gone far beyond what I'd expect from most established companies, let alone a brand new one. This is easily my favorite machine that I've worked with, and that's a very long list of printers, including some costing six figures. Another Chinese printer company that I've worked with, QIDI, has some of the best customer service that I've experienced in the industry. Blanket statements are rarely optimal.

Hi all, one 'extra' you get from having an AMS is long job run cover or end of spool usage. My daughter has been printing large scale aircraft parts on an X1C for 5 months 24/7. She sets her alarm for job completion, has build plates ready to go. Routine being get the completed job out, put a fresh build plate in and send the next plate (In the slicer, you can have multiple plates in one job.) to the printer. All the filament is same brand, colour and batch so when spool 1 runs out the AMS just switches to spool 2 (Check settings it is a checkbox) so if say 1 and 2 are empty she swaps for full ones. This is also useful if you are printing functional parts where you don't care about the colour, just fill the AMS with your almost empty of the same type, tell the AMS it is all the same and walk away. If it is a big job then you maybe have to go back to add other end of run filament. Remember you are trying to save money by using old stuff too short to do a full job, so use a heat box, kitchen dehydrator, oven whatever you have, don't risk a failure with the filament you had in the shed for 2 months.

⁠@@VincentGroenewold you have free control to fix parts of your printer, the only limitation with the proprietary nature is buying it from bambu lab’s store. bambu lab has also clarified that if they ever go out of business, they will fully open everything with the printer. everything. design, parts, repairs.

The X1C is a game changer and I love it. For me a 3D printer is a tool vs. a hobby (of getting the machine to work, and sure, if I have to learn the ins & outs and “tinker” no problem, but I was tinkering more than I was getting value from the tool with my Ender (tinkering 70% + to getting successful prints. When I got my X1C, the ratio flipped dramatically. 90% + of success as a tool and rare occasion tinkering (calibrating mostly for optimal results vs. just trying to get a successful print with the Ender). Not only is it consistently way more reliable, but the speed & quality of the output is far superior. I’m about to purchase another X1C in a week and possibly a 3rd before the end of the year. I feel the same as you Norm, that this machine makes printing FUN again. I was happy to see Adam jazzed about it too. Cheers!

Another nice feature I've personally had save me a ton of time, is the auto detection of spool issues. I had to respool some filament and ran into a few tangles, and it automatically detected it, paused, let me untangle it, refeed the filament, and it picked up the print where it left off. The print came out perfect, with very little waste. That normally would have cost me several full prints. Not worried about the filament loss as much as the time. Having to start a 10 hour print over three times would have taken forever. Having interrupted several times only added 30min or so. Also, all the automatic saves a ton of time worrying about calibrating for each filament to get smooth prints. No more trying to dial in the flow rates and temperatures to get smooth prints. It just works, every time.

Speaking from experience running basically a fully automated 16 slot filament shelf is an absolute blast, but with great power comes great responsibility. Another way to mitigate waste are models that just stack the colors. Only colors swaps within layers may cause massive amounts. Vertical swaps once every few layers only need a few swaps.

I'm excited for this ability to change colors for embossed text. I print alot of organizers, usually with a label on them to show what goes in the organizers. Think like socket sets, or plastic tools for automotive connectors that don't come with a tray to put them in. Right now I have to spend a bunch of time carefully painting the raised text. It'd be much easier to tell the software to print the organizer in grey, and the raised text in white.

@@112428 If you can manage to print the letters last, on top of the print, you can just swap the filament when reaching the letters by adding a filament swap to the gcode and do a two color print even on any single material printer. This works by orienting the parts or by printing just signs that way and glueing them on. Stacking two or more colors of the same filament type works on every machine.

Old but…about the waste: I don’t know how it’s in the US but here in Germany I tried filament from a brand called Recycling Fabrik where u can send in your fail prints and scrap parts (PLA and PETG) or empty spools to get discount points. They also sell rPLA and rPETG (r for recycled).

I have a X1C with double AMS, and my experiences have been extremely good compared to other printers i have like a prusa mk2.5 and a sidewinder X1. I have over 500 hours of printing time on my X1C, zero clogs, the only print fails i have had where bed adhesion issues(mostly my own fault) and i can still count the failures on 2 hands. This printer really pushes the market forward, the bar is raised. The competition has work to do.

I've said this before on other X1C reviews and I'll say it again: this is a great TOOL for integrating 3d printing to your other hobbies as a support piece rather than another hobby to collect. I have plenty of expensive hobbies, I don't need another. I need to make 3d print positives for sandcasting metal or test a scale design iteration for my telescope platform. I don't want to have to build and learn 3d printing from scratch with a kit in a box. I want a great tool I don't have to think a whole lot about.

Best feature of the AMS is having multiple colors ready to go for a project. Don't need to get up and swap through your filaments. Effectively making it a true remote start system. It's one step away from self cleaning the print bed haha

@@chuysaucedo7119 I had a thought. Imagine if the slicer could tell if a part was able to be nudged off the build plate, out the front door into a container. In essence it would wait to cool, then attempt to separate from build plate by pushing it. If the sensors are used the system could behave in a way that doesn't damage itself or the part.

Excellent presentation! This is the only review I've found that addresses, in detail, the quality differences at different speeds. Print quality is especially important to me since I am a hobbyist (OK to have long print times) who designs engineered parts that need accuracy and good finish. Thank you for being thorough.

+1 to this. My biggest frustration with the machine (other than that troubleshooting is significantly harder than with my ender) is that the print quality does seem to suffer at speed, even with calibration. A few thousandths bulge from linear advanced is enough to ruin the fit between parts and waste my life going after it with a scraper

I love the control options of using an sd card, direct connect, or our local network system. I also appreciate the optional cloud benefits and the wifi camera for monitoring prints from across town. The range of choices allow for convenience and security.

I have quite a few printers at this point that just sit around untouched because of the fact that the X1C just works. For me it’s the convenience of just being able to effortlessly switch materials say if I need to print something out of carbon fiber, I just flip the build plate over and it takes care of the rest then put the plate back and it’s immediately ready to rock out prints in PLA. It’s a favourite of many people for a reason. If your just starting out and want something that will handle everything you throw at it with little effort, just get the P1P as it’s hard to beat at the price point.

I'm so super happy with my P1P. The only big downside is the high speed causes a lot of vibrations so you need some seriously stable platform to place it on. I often run my P1P on 50% speed which honestly is still very fast 😶 Eyeing an AMS to make material switches faster and being capable off printing with a dedicated support material.

For anyone afraid that you can't control the settings enough: you can change literally EVERY aspect of the print including extruder feeding, layer temps (first and rest of layers), infills, overhangs, speeds for every line type. It can be super complex. But in it's core 90% of the time it seems the presets are spot on. Click the preset, hit print, enjoy the show :)

Man, I have to say, the Bambu support material is freaking amazing. Set the gap between support and print at zero, and the prints look phenomenal. It's also SUPER easy to remove. The only thing is that the switches waste a ton of the stuff and it's not exactly cheap.

@@goawaybaizuo yeah that's the main thing that keeps me from considering doing multi color printing. It's a loooot of waste. But I can see some edge cases (like that badge where it does a single switch) where it could be cool. And for the support printing I'd only use it on very specific models. I recently printed a Ghostbusters Slimer and getting the support out of the mouth is hellish. There it could be great to have a softer support material 😁 But my main draw is remote switching of materials 👍🏻

Probably the printer I’ll get once I get tired of my old Ender 3. Currently about an hour into a 14 hour print for a part I want to use tomorrow. If it fails I’ll be SOL because I won’t have time to re-print it. So a faster printer that retains quality and reliability would be nice.

I'm very happy to see Bambu raise the bar. That said, for my hobby tools I'm allergic to cloud services and closed source so I'm happy to wait for a fully local and open solution. For production tools the calculus is different. If I believe the company will be around for longer than the lifespan of the tool and I don't expect to hack it then I'm less strict about both cloud and closed source.

you dont need to use the cloud for it. There is LAN mode and SD card just like most other printers.

@@JarenMorris_UnderHover it's turning 3d printing into a very closed ended commercialised thing. Which is inevitable. The carbon rails are glued into place and can't be replaced when they wear out. The data feed to the cloud is encrypted and bambu refuse to divulge what user data they are pulling from people's systems, the amount of data they are collecting is fairly large apparently.

What is the durability and serviceability? Even with the input shaping and corexy kinematics, the mechanical wear would be exponential at insane speeds. What about the availability of 3rd party upgrades and parts? Could be useful for faster turnaround of rapid prototypes, if not forvthe data piracy and ip protection concerns in uploading to a cloud service in a country, that does not respect IP rights that much. Just some 💭

Main cons are - its very loud at it’s ”normal speeds” >150mm/s, - some heat bed has warped for users (mine is fine so far) - three supports are very weak and ruins prints of not changed. Pros are: very fast, good to very good print quality, ams works fine

Some prints may not have any colour requirements. It would be useful if you could print these items along with colour specific prints, bed space allowing, to use the otherwise wasted filament.

Hey Norm, you should reach out to Creality and see if you can get a review sample of their upcoming Creality K1 or K1 Max (30x30x30). It sure looks very inspired design from the X1C but since the Bambulab one has been here for a while now I'm more interested in the K1 if there are bigger improvements that differ a lot from the X1C. Great review, loved that you implemented a CT scan study as well!!

Core XY means the belts move it diagonally, the best explanation I’ve seen is in Linus Tech Tips chocolate 3D printer video from a few years ago. One belt moves diagonal, two at once moves it straight.

Sort of, basically. There's two steppers both driving the hot end and the cross piece, so it's not just doing X and Y like reduced delta printer. It's actually really cool how it's belted to move two separate components in a way that makes it add up to diagonal motion.

I like a lot of the ideas that this printer brings to the table, but the one sticking point I have is the cloud connection. This was highlighted recently when a number of users reported that their Carbon printers started printing commanded. Not a great situation. But I also wonder about how much of my data Bamboo is collecting and potentially selling to 3rd parties. The cost of the cloud connection is definitely weighing heavily against the benefit for me.

Luckily there is a “offline” mode where you can stay connected over your wifi but not hit their servers. though you lose certain non essential features like connection to the app

I’m blown away by my X1C coming from an Ender 3. The max speed/acceleration travel movements are so fast you will miss it if you blink. It is so unreal to watch.

It looks like you could somewhat easily create and print a mod that automatically switches to the external roll, feeds it into the printer, and pulls it back out when no longer needed. Very simple, Y splitter, filament sensor, extruder that can move out of the way when finished loading/unloading, and some simple code An automatic build plate swapping system would be incredible, being able to just load a stack of plates in to a hopper, and have the printer automatically swap them out when finished printing, before starting the next print. Push start when you go to bed, and when you’re back the next day, you have a bunch of neatly lined up build plates filled with the various parts you needed

500 mm/s is ONLY the printhead maximum speed. The actual printing speed is a lot lower for filament types other than PLA. But the coreXY and proper tuning still means you can get higher speed and good quality than most bed slingers.

After watching this I was convinced and bought an X1 Carbon and all of the filaments and accessories. Carefully followed the enclosed instructions, placed it on a granite slab to eliminate vibration. First print? Nope fails to do anything buy display errors and Bambulabs support is taking forever for some reason. If I don't get the thing working pretty soon I am sending the entire batch back for a refund.

on Creality K1 you can only change the speed from the front touch panel, period. if you root the printer you can access via Fluid as a slider, but whichever way you do it, the printer STOPS cold, jerks and starts the new speed and ALWAYS messes up your print regardless of wether you're speeding up or slowing down. on Bambu, there's almost no difference except the sheen of the side walls.

The problem with the Bambu is that it's closed, no good way to fix things yourself or change anything and that holds me back, because I've been burnt before by companies going out of business and leaving me with a paper weight.

Not entirely. Is a fork of it, but Bambu techs have done a lot of their own work in the open source software. They are continually bringing out new firmware, as well as implementing features that come out on Prusa. Edit: also Prusa is a fork of Slic3r

Before you go and get a 3D printer on this level where everything just works I feel like you need to learn the ins and outs of a lower class printer in order to learn the growing pains, and maintenance of what real 3D printing is like. This is more like the last and best printer you will buy after learning how to use different slicer programs and whatnot.

I personally do not regret using hundreds of hours of learning to troubleshoot a poor quality printer. There is still plenty of troubleshooting with filaments, print settings, and modifying models without having to ask if the printer is broken.

I really want a new 3d printer. A large print bed printer, that prints good outside the box so i do not have to post process so much before i paint. I've been looking into resin printers because of the factory looking finishes you can get but ultimately I'm on the fence on everything which leads me into just sticking with my ender 3. I would gladly drop a 1500 on a printer to end all printers, that would be the last printer i owned for the next 10 years. I'm just unsure of what i would like to get.

Been hearing a lot about this printer, but the price is up at the Prusa level. Is the quality and reliability also at that level? I started my journey in FDM printing back with a cheaper Ender 3 printer and while it "worked" it was a night and day difference when I got my first Prusa printer. That thing was and still is insanely reliable.

To me this is just a very affordable (in comparison) ultimaker printer. The only downside I see is having to use their proprietary slicer, whereas I used cura for ultimaker and creality products alike

I own both Resin and FDM. if you need to make anything practical from parts to tools FDM is the only option really. not to mention it can print real plastics with UV stability while Resin can't survive with out being coated in paint.

So being in the prusa land the advertised benchy is 20 minutes ish. Looks like this is still a tad faster. I could see most printers reaching these speeds in a year. This is a really nice printer.

Going to buy one....but not til they hit Gen 2. Should have most of the bugs worked out by then. Still not sure whether I need or even want AMS. Will cross that bridge when I come to it, I suppose. Also hoping Elegoo puts out an 8k+ Jupiter that has the lead screw runout issues dealt with. Edit: I need to find that water bear (tardigrade) print!! COOL!!!!
