“Ban Hun Lek” (บ้านหุ่นเหล็ก) is Thailand's ‘home’ of towering steel robots and other lifesize and uncannily realistic sculptures made entirely out of recycled scrap metal parts.
Founded 20 years ago and located next to Route 32 in Ang Thong province, around 130 km north of Bangkok, the sprawling workshops where the art installations are hammered and welded together have been more recently supplemented by a unique museum that's stuffed full of the steel statues alongside a large yard where the finished creations are lined up for sale or rent.
From towering robot ‘transformers’ up to 8 metres tall, to just about every superhero and outlandish movie personality that exists, characters from horror movies to children's book, novelties such as Steve Jobs and Gollum as well as pretty much every member of the Star Wars cast, Ban Hun Lek represents a unique and unusual day out.
There are also several lifesize replica cars and when I visited there was a Mercedes 300 SL, Ferrari 250 GTO, a pair of Bugatti Chirons, a Batmobile and a Mercedes AMG GT all made out of reclaimed steel parts and instantly recognisable through accurate dimensions as well as several classic cars rotting away at the back of the yard.
