Ex-offenders cannot get jobs. Yet employment is one of the most powerful tools against recidivism. How can a community-even a conservative city like Jacksonville-come to grips with helping ex-offenders obtain employment? Kevin will discuss the practical community benefits of providing job opportunities for ex-offenders, dispel some of the myths of why and how ex-offenders should not be hired, and demonstrate why job training is more “cost-effective” societally and financially than incarceration.
Kevin E. Hyde is a partner and employment lawyer with Foley & Lardner LLP. Hyde represents employers in a variety of human resources matters, and is managing partner of the firm’s Jacksonville office. Hyde speaks regularly at various programs and seminars, focusing on employment issues.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I got the chance to present along with Kevin. As a small businessman and lawyer, I thought I had thought about all issues related to hiring. I had never thought about this and agree to ban the box in our firm. It's hard to simultaneously entertain and educate and Kevin excelled at both.

Ban the Box doesn't do anything!!!! 10 year old non violent crime still automatically disqualifies me. Even with a college education and military service!!! How is this fair or ethical?
@douglasdoddtherecoverycoac3178
You have to continue to fight for incentives for Non-violent offenders!

All the exclamation points and terrible grammar makes me think you didn’t do any of that. It’s illegal to pose as a military official

But doesn’t ban the box make it so the question isn’t even on the application? So how do they know about that?

People with money and power need to fight against this kind of discrimination. They are the only ones with enough pull to make it happen. But as long as politicians lawyers lobbyists work together to keep things the same and enrich themselves in this corrupt system things will never change..
@douglasdoddtherecoverycoac3178
Well done! You did an excellent job! Adam Silvergate talks about how the average person commits three felonies every single day.. I love the statement... What would happen if you had to write down the worse thing you've ever done on an application.. Do you think you would get the job.. Outstanding! Please continue to talk about this issue!

I'm honestly conflicted. My business is my baby, and I wouldn't want a felon handling the ins and outs, but on the other hand one cannot overlook the fact that an employee with something to prove is always the best employee. If our government expects us to hire felons over non-offenders, an additional tax break for small businesses is in order!

What if they were wrongfully committed they still have to check the box

It's the "fear factor" he mentioned. Give yourself the opportunity to get to know the felon applicant and make your determination about them as a person.

It's the fear of being sued in this litigious society $$$$ talks and bs walks...It's all about financial liability which is reinforced by politicians and the lawyer lobby in Washington DC

how do you enfor "ban the box"? what's to stop a company from just googleing the person's record
@charlesgriffith7166
@charlesgriffith7166 Год назад
Exactly Daniel. As an ex con myself I can say ban the box only serves to get you that one more step in the possible hiring process just to more than likely be denied due to criminal record. Applications with that dreaded question just means they won't call you to interview when they see it. Applications without that question just means you stand a better chance making it to interview. But wait there's more. You can impress the interviewer all day long with what you can bring to the table. Enough to where they will offer you the position. But "conditional offer" pending third party background check. 9 chances out of 10, the results of that third party background check become more of a determining issue than what you may be able to bring to the table. I'm employed full-time now. But it took going through all the many doors shut in my face before I finally got here. Even then (just being truthful) I just happened to know the right people at the right time also. If not for that, I can't honestly say one way or the other how things would have worked out. I can only speculate on that one.

The quarter past 3 question isn't that hard. The minute hand is at 3 and the hour hand is 1/4 of the way between 3 and 4, so it is 1/48 of the 360 degrees... or 7.5. It is a really good question. It goes to see how well people can figure out relatively simple problems framed in unusual ways. Some people would just give up, but others would think about it for a while and realize it isn't as hard as it sounded at first.

FortNikitaBullion your point? People shouldn’t be forced to go back to jail because they couldn’t get a job because of that box.

Perhaps we should think less about the violent criminals and more about the people they impacted. Who cares about them? They should've thought about that before impacting someone's life.

Why should we discriminate people that made a mistake? This also happens to people that committed non violent crimes.

Violent offenders are a different breed. Most offenders in jail are incarcerated for non-violent offenses and will come out with Felony records.
