Mr. Santosh Kumar Mohanty of Nayagarh has done his Diploma in Electronics. He is doing some electronics business also. But his lucrative agriculture entrepreneurship started with Banana cultivation after the untimely accidental death of his father. He is cultivating with tissue culture banana varieties of G9 (Cavendish banana), patakpura, amruthapani and plantain varieties of gaja, paunsia and batista.
He is reducing input cost by adopting innovative techniques. He is not planting banana every year, rather he has planted tissue culture banana saplings in the 1st year along with the installation of the drip irrigation system. He plans to keep this field for next 10 to 12 crops using banana suckers. He is irrigating and fertigating the banana fields simultaneously through drip system. He is also using this drip irrigation system for plant protection measures. He is planting banana plants at 5 X 7 feet spacing and plantains at 5 X 8 feet spacing. Approximately 1400 plant population will be maintained per 1 acre at this spacing. Flowering starts for banana at 7 month old and marketed at 11 month. For plantains, flowering starts at 9 month stage and marketed at 12-13 month. He is profiting at least net Rs.300/- per plant in a year i.e. Rs.4,20,000/- net profit per year per acre.
He is mulching his banana fields regularly with unused leaves and plant parts. By this, fertility and water holding capacity of the soil is improved. Microbial activity is also improved in the soil. He is scheduling his weekly fertigation plan through drip irrigation system, instead of once in a month. He is following some improved technologies to enhance the growth and size of the banana fruits and the bunches.
