Banana Propagation 

Extremely useful video, a lot I know and some I didnt. Plant pups horizontally? who would have thought, makes perfect sense. Nightshades came up from compost, found tomatoes a great companion plant with stems as support.The ash /detergent soak, great idea. Thanks so much, looking forward to the next one.

Very informative! I have seen conflicting info elsewhere, but you go into greater depth, seem to have greater experience, and make far more sense. For example, others say a water pup has a more extensive root system than true pups and grow quicker, but as is typically true - the corn contains the stored energy and vitality. So subscribed. Needless to say kiwi women are also among the most beautiful in the world, and have a down to earth charm second to none - which makes the vid especially easy to watch.

Cool video. I've never bothered shaving off existing roots when transplanting pups though. Once a root is damaged it turns black and dies so all those roots you're shaving off won't try and regrow, they just die back and the new roots regrow all the same. IMO is easier and actually better to just plant the pup in ground with all the old roots which will just decompose and add extra nutrients to the soil. When getting a new pup to transplant, I always just rinse off the corm and roots and then immediately plant and have 100% success rate transplanting this far.

That was so good! I just recently planted 4 new bananas, but didn’t have this knowledge, wish I had watched this prior! I’ll be better prepared next spring!!

Thats the most useful info Ive yet to see on Banana propagation. Thanks so much. I usually just whack 'em out with a spade and take off the leaves and re plant. Oops. Love the tip re growing horizonatally also....I get the nor easter full on here and wind damage is an issue. I like the ash and detergent tip and the nightshade info also. Lots I didnt know. dayjm i learned a lot from this fvideo! I have a plant that I just dug up out of a large container and going to put in the ground this evening. Was just going to plant it as is once the roots dried out and in a hole up and down but seems like I will need to give these wonder tips a try instead! Many Thanks -N

Do you limit the number of pups you allow to grow around the original (as some growers advise helps ensure good production)? And you don’t seem to cut the fruiting palm down to the ground after it is done.

How tall should a true pup be to ensure it succeeds? How can I know? I have several that are 4 feet tall but I also have MANY that are 1 foot tall.

Should I completely cover the banana if I plant it horizontally?

Hey Frida, Super cool video, so interesting, thank you. I have been given a pup with a few long leaves attached still. Is it a good idea to plant in a pot now in the greenhouse, still following your method, and then plant out in Spring in the orchard? Or just plant it out straight away. I am in Raglan, frost free, orchard is sheltered (Nicky from CROP) ;)

Hello! I have a question. I have a small banana up to 1 meter and I wanted to change its pot from a small one to a bigger one and some of its roots broke. Immediately it started to drop leaves and gradually I lost all the leaves from it. What can I do to revitalize it and grow back?

How many true pups should I allow to mature off of the mother?

There's no need to chop off the top of the Pstem of a pup. It wont continue growing until the roots establish and the leaves will supply energy to help the roots grow faster. All that you accomplish by chopping off the top is making it shorter and taking longer to have any leaves.

Wood ash is extremely Alkaline. Only use Ash if your soil is extremely acidic. If you have Neutral or Alkaline soil absolutely do not use ash, it will make your soil worse. Bananas prefer slightly acidic soil.

Why do you only have two sorts of lady finger and not grow the more popular cavendish bananas? Or the subo for cooking.

Must point out two novice errors. There is no reason plant your new sucker (a pup is a baby dog) at an angle. Fact is the sucker will grow new roots from all points in a circle all around, anchoring the new plant on all sides. Besides, the short section of stem left above ground will never be blown around. Second, too much of the old corm is left on the end of the prepared sucker. It will never grow new roots from that section. Safe to say two-thirds of it should be cut away & discarded.
