Kent, you have brought a tear to this old set of eyes. This is a desert that my late mother knew was my favorite throughout my childhood. And virtually every time, after I grew up and while she could, if she knew I was on the way to my parents place, she would make it for me, awaiting my arrival with my wife and kids. Thanks for this recipe, but she passed her recipe to me WAY before she passed. It is close to yours in "almost" all particulars, particularly the requirement for the "Nilla" vanilla wafers. And I will stay true to hers, but yours is definitely a close second, in my mind. HEY! It's my mom's recipe! Thanks for happy tears.

Never thought I’d be watching Kent dancing to Synthwave lol, but my eclectic musical tastes aside I wanted to say thanks y’all. I’m 23 now, it’s been 13 years since my paternal grandmother passed and only 4 since my grandfather passed but y’all’s food always reminds me of them. Probably because we’re Okies through and through same as you. But this takes me back to Sunday’s and holidays when I was just 6-7. Everybody laughing and loving on each other, eating the best food cooked on earth, and celebrating the Lords love for us. We don’t get to do much of that anymore, and a few of my aunts and uncles always want to fight us over money that doesn’t exist. But these bring me back to a simpler time, when there wasn’t anything to fight over, aside from who ate the last piece of pie.

This take me back 40 years when i was a young Marine stationed in South Carolina in the late 70's. Not only did i have to learn/translate the southern drawl but had to eat like a southerner too. Grits was new to me and so was bbq, sweet tea and 'naner puddin'........never had that before and it was good back then. i've seen you add a shot or 2 of whiskey in some things you make. you ever try soaking or dizzling the bananas in rum? mighty good stuff! as always thanks for what you do and as a veteran i appreciate you and your beautiful wife very much. God bless you both and the pups too!!

As always I am so happy to see you and the doggies. Instant pudding would allow you to make this dish in areas that would not be possible otherwise. The 70’s were all about instant pudding, cool whip and canned fruit, women would get little recipes when they watched their stories everyday. But I’ve come a long way and I would rather make pastry cream than take a short cut. There’s a after taste to that boxed stuff. Best wishes to you, Jen

I grew up on nanner puddin ( yep thats what we call it here in Appalachia ). My mom would make a bowl of it for just about every Sunday dinner. It was the most common desert at family dinners , get togethers and reunions. Its still the desert I go for at such occasions if there is any present.

not bad, but if you want to kick it up a notch, caramelize your bananas with brown sugar, cinnamon, and butter. Fold some of the whip cream mixture into the pudding mixture. Add a bit of cinnamon and nutmeg to the pudding/whip mix. Top with the rest of the whip, dust with nilla wafers, tile with pepperidge farm chessmen.

I have a (larger than normal - at least in my area) family of 7 (5 kids ages 9 all the way down to 2) that I need to feed, so your meals that feed a crowd are right up my alley, and the huge variety AND desserts, means we won't be eating the same things on repeat. You are doing such a great thing for mommas like me everywhere!! (And my 2 year old son loves learning new words while watching your videos, like "eat" and "doggie" - that last one said with a huge smile on his little baby face). I'll definitely be ordering your cookbooks as soon as I'm able!!

I do not know how my grandfather came up with his recipe. I wish I had thought to ask before he passed some 35 years ago. But it is completely different from any that I've ever seen. He would layer the vanilla wafers and bananas into the pan, all the way to the top. Then he'd pour over the top some evaporated milk until it was about half way up the pan. It then went in the refrigerator to be served the next day. By then that milk would have soaked all the way to the top of the wafers, the bottom wafers would be mush. It was very very sweet. You couldn't eat much. Now the pan he used most often was the pan just below the freezer compartment on the refrigerator. The one that would get things really cold but not freeze. It took several boxes of wafers, a whole tree of bananas and lots of evaporated milk but everyone at the reunion was sure to get their fill of naner pudding. It doesn't get any easier and no one ever complained that there was no pudding in his banana pudding

Good afternoon Kent, thank you my friend for stirring up some memories from long ago. My mother-in-law and my Momma both used to make Nanner Puddin on a frequent basis. Usually for enjoying after a Sunday Supper. Mmmmm, Mmmmm good. Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk. Momma used to keep several cans stored in the Pantry. Homemade Whipped Cream was all Momma ever used. She would add a dash of vanilla to the mix. Take care my friend and keep cool. Stan in North Idaho

Hello Cowboy Kent. Looks delicious. Old fashioned banana pudding with 'Nila wafers. In a pinch, if you need to make a banana flavored milkshake, banana pudding can actually be used for the flavoring. Mix it with a half cup of milk and some vanilla ice cream (or banana ice cream if you happen to have it on hand) Blend on high. Pour into a tall glass and enjoy. Thank you for allowing me to share.

Sounds like a good quick recipe. I have been making the cooked custard style for 50 years but this sounds good. I made this quite often for my elderly dad because he loved it. However I couldn’t make a small one so the bananas would turn brown and the vanilla wafers would get too soggy. So I started just making the pudding and add the bananas and wafers when serving. It tasted fresher every time for several days.
