Every time a fragrance smells in some way like another fragrance, the reviewer focuses on that, saying its a clone. There are only so many notes and accords that can be combined, and there will be smell-alikes. Unless a fragrance smells 110% like another fragrance, then its not a clone, unless the manufacturer says its so (IMHO). Also, unless you talk to the creator of the fragrance, who then confirms that it was INSPIRED by this or that fragrance, then the fragrance is a standalone fragrance, because there's no proof of any thing else. Like one reviewer said, every time a fragrance has pineapple, people say it MUST be an Aventus. So, was Aventus inspired by Curve (1996), since they both have pineapple, bergamot and musk? And how can these be clones, if Grassland is SUPPOSEDLY a MINTY GIT?! C'mon, reviewers need to stop the nonsense, unless they interview the perfumer. Jus'sayn.

i liked your honesty in this review. when i first metal rain i instantly thought it must be a clone of silver mountain water and evidently enough you were able to indicate it was more of a combination on some of the creeds hahahha. that being said i am a fan of MI and SMW. i would def try metal rain over the other one. as far as clones go, i don't mind buying them as long as they do a better job performing than the originals!

Why stop there.. Does that mean no more Parfums De Marly too? Mancera/Montale even Xerjoff has it's clones too. All these "Niche" houses pretty much to do the same thing the list could go on and on an on. Thameen, Amouroud, Roja.... Also he's ok with these big million/billion dollar companies like Zara and Banana Republic doing clones but god for bin a small family owned clone house does the same thing.

I loved your honesty and your in depth opinion on what these fragrances actually remind you of . If I had to choose one over the other it would be Metal Rain. My opinion on clones has changed over the years . The idea of a company trying to do an exact copy at a bargain price is great for a beginner or somebody on a budget , however invariably I got disappointed with the result . Inspired fragrances on the other hand that go for the feel of a popular fragrance or fragrances can work.. they seem go ultimately go off in a bit of a different direction that distinguishes them and that’s ok by me . Hanae Mori Him EDP. comes to mind as a “stand in” for Gucci Pour Homme 2 . Not exact but similar vibe. Keep up the great work! Love the reviews

1. Definitely respect the honesty 2. I'd probably pick the one that was close to smw 3. I personally have zero issue with clones. There has been a lot more than one occasion where the original had 1 issue or another, mostly performance, and I'll try a dupe and it's just exponentially better. Two stand out examples are Alexandria Fructus virginis and parfums vintage evolution de l'homme soir. I prefer to have the original but have zero issue going with a clone if i perceive it to be better somehow

That minty fougere twist on GIT actually sounds quite inviting. That one would definitely be my pick. A good partner to Vintage Green. Like your description of Metal Rain though Sebastian. We've been seeing quite a few fragrances that fuse 2 originals lately, so why not 3? 🤣 As far as clones go, I am 100% on the side of cloning vintage discontinued fragrances that are no longer available and impossible to find. Like Jurassic Fragrance Park. 🦕 Other than that, the game has become a bit redundant. Even if a brand attempts to "improve" on a fragrance phenotype, the results are always subjective. Barring media influence of course. With the progressive successes of Aventus, Sauvage and BR540, the trend seems to be whittling a formula down to a simplistic mass of synthetics that will sell for $$$$. I wonder if the epitome will be a single molecule that will force its way into our noses and give us an instant orgasm. 🙌 That's the dream anyway. MI, USA

Yeah I’m going to totally disagree with you on this Sebastian. So because something smells similar to something else, then it’s considered a clone? That’s absolutely ridiculous. There are plenty of niche houses, PDM is the big one, that make fragrances that smell similar to designers ones. Does that make PDM a clone house?

Gotta be honest, not everyone has the money for the original niche brand vs. the clones, so for the more lower-income individuals a clone is much more economically affordable for them than the original brand. I also think if anything you should review clones more because as a reviewer you’re supposed to give people ALL the options that best suit their specific needs rather than picking and choosing what suits you personally. To some people, if they can achieve a certain smell at a price they can afford, then that’s what they’ll go with instead of breaking bank for the bigger brand. You’d be doing those people a huge service to get those great smells at a more affordable price you know? I’m fine with clones personally but overall I prefer the highest quality rather than brand. If it comes in a clone or an original brand is irrelevant to me personally, as long as that scent is knockin 💪🏽 your intro cracked me up tho lol “What’s the world coming to” same 😂 awesome vid as usual Sebastian 🙏🏽

As long as there are some differences, I'm fine with clones being heavily inspired. I do feel like the prices niche houses command should require them to think about scent profiles that can't be knocked off with cheap ingredients. Justify your price.
@laurensspruit1647
@laurensspruit1647 3 года назад
Cheap brands and niche brands use the same synthetic ingredients. Real essential oils, absolutes or tincture extracts are very rare also in Niche perfumery. I don't think the aroma chemicals in Green Irish Tweed and Aventus cost more than $0.50 per bottle. There are countless reasons why niche perfumery is more expensive, but 'better ingredients' is almost always not one of them.

So if Aspen, Cool Water and GIT smell similar ... which was the first and which are clones? I personally don't have a problem with clones or homages (as opposed to out right copies) because the bad and mediocre ones will be found out but the good ones provide the service of offering scents that may be more affordable than the original. This fills a need for budget and beginning collectors. However, every fragrance reviewer needs to find their niche (pun intended) and if that is focusing on some designer frags but more niche brand and exclusive lines that is fine. There are many other very good fragrance reviewers... many of whom do review clones.

I would much rather have a house that out and out tells me they’re making clones. I prefer that to the “here is our all new fragrance” approach and then it just smells like Aventus. I especially like clones when niche houses are using the same cheap ingredients as everyone else but marking their releases up just because they can. A $50 clone of a $350 fragrance that doesn’t even using real Oud/Ambergris (for example) is fine by me. If I’m getting inexpensive synthetics either way, I’ll save the money.

So if they're different, then they're not clones, right? I'm most interested in Grassland. Big fan of Vintage Green 78 from Banana Republic. I liked hearing what you thought about two fragrances that are being mentioned a lot lately. If I win the contest, then I might select the second one of the two that you mentioned since I enjoy the kind of fragrance that is like Creed's S. M. W., and it seems like a pretty good way of becoming familiar with two other Creed perfumes that it seems to be inspired by. Sebastian, it's alright with me if you don't promote clone perfume houses, even though at this time in my life I can only afford inexpensive perfumes. I think that clones can be a pretty good way to become familiar with expensive perfumes. However, I'd much rather have the actual version of something (e.g. on account of the higher-quality ingredients) even though some of the inexpensive alternatives can have better overall performance than the perfume that it's a clone of. I think that the company, Armaf (e.g), produces better perfumes than what's at dollar stores. I hope that I win the draw; I live in MD., U.S.A.

Out of the two, I’d go with Metal Rain as I’m not the biggest fan of GIT and have yet to smell those other creeds. I have two Banana Republic fragrances: Vintage Green and Oud Mosaic. The oud one I really do not like, at least not yet, quite too acrid for me. Prefer by far Versace's Oud Noir, or Gucci's Intense Oud. Vintage Green is crisp and bright, it's probably the greenest fragrance I have, so bright green, I'd say even pungent. Have not worn it much, find it quite too sharp. Smells nice but to me ends up not being so comfortable/pleasant having that sharp green smell around me for long. Because of my experience with these two (blind buys) I have decided not to try any other Banana Republics unless smelling them first.

Some clones perform way better than the authentic fragrance.I have a couple companies in mind that make great ones that project and perform way better.Sometimes I forget and what they are.I am not going to name the brand clone... but I am sure some of you already know which ones I am referring.We need to stop being too snobby unless you want to be ripedoff.Some don't have the same budget and don't want to break the bank so yeah why not try a clone.Stay safe and smell good.😎

Happy Wednesday. To be honest, to be an honest reviewer clones should not be omitted. You can manage how many clone videos you will do. Maybe a top 5 or 10 or 15 annually or semi annually.

Banana republic it’s been to me like a reference…plus at discounters they are $25 bucks each ,I have almost the whole collection just because of you… if there’s a fragrance I like with similar notes from one’s of the bananas, I got a pretty good idea how they may smell… yes I did buy most of my perfumes base on that… mfk, kilian, parfume of Marley, diptyque, Tom Ford etc,etc… and for $25.. how can I say no… soooo bring it banana republic if I’m going to spend $300+ I’m going to make sure I like it and know how they smell before I buy it…

I really love your videos. I wish there was a female version of you who reviews mostly women's perfumes. I don't have problems with dupes or inspired fragrances if they are well done. And Zara perfumes/colognes are very popular with RU-vidrs here. And many cannot spend that much on fragrances. I actually really like how you showed pictures of actual notes since I'm not familiar with what the notes are supposed to look like and pictures of fragrances that you are comparing to. I like how the pictures are large as the video. I watched this video because apparently Banana Republic fragrances can be found at Marshalls /TJ Maxx /Burlington recently (I guess they are getting rid of their old bottles?) for about $21.00 and some RU-vidrs have reviewed them. I know Scented RU-vidr loves Black Platinum (it's one of her 10/10 perfumes) and Beauty Meow RU-vidr also reviewed several recently (but not Grassland or Metal Rain) and liked most of them. I think if I were to get one, I would get the Grassland but Metal Rain sounds nice too.

I bought both from Burlington and returned them. Both are nice scents but if you own cool water dont bother with grasslands in my opinion the notes don't stand out enough and it has the same cast. Metal Rain, is interesting till the dry down and then i really couldn't notice it. Honestly you'll get more out of throwing your clothes in the dryer with some Downey Unstoppables. I do own most of the Banana Republic Icon line and some other B.R. scents so nothing against B.R. but these two scents definitely need more cowbell

Another great reveiw by the professor of perfumery . I enjoyed this content because i like the Icon collection. I dont think I've commented on any You Tube content since you last reviewd Banana Republic Icon collection. I have blind bought 7 of these now from discount stores mostly because of your thoughts . I have 10 kids 5 grown and 5 at home so i am always looking for bargin buys .😆 They both sound great and my shelf has 2 empty spots now where these belong beside their siblings but having to pick one I'd go with my fav color green for the tie breaker. As for clones i appreciate your view on them and im guessing from the point of view perfumery being art which i do agree with and it does seem kind of like plagiarism . My wife likes Van Gough and so I buy her $150-$300 oil reproductions as i cannot afford the real thing. If i only had 2 or 3 colonges maybe i wouldnt consider clones but I have close to 100 on my shelves and some of those are perfume parlor versions of Nasamottos and Killians that i would not otherwise be able to enjoy . I appreciate the purest point of view and i think i agree but I am just a hypocritical enthusiasts .

I only buy clones of discontinued fragrances or of fragrances I like very much but that are crazy expensive (over 150 € is just too much for me). I found a 30€ clone for Baccarat Rouge that I prefer over the original, actually 😶. But it doesn't happen frequently. Otherwise I am not the biggest fan of clones and dupes either. 😊

I am on the fence about clones. From one point of view its a sort of a copyright infringement, but on the other hand if a clones house can nail a dupe with same raw materials used in the original + have an outstanding performance and all this for half the price - why not. 'Inspired by' title is just a marketing trick to get more 'blind buyers' who don't need to sample the fragrance

I am okay with a clone if the original is discontinued or is heavily reformulated. For example if BR made a long lasting clone of La Nuit de L'Homme or Dior Homme 2011, I'd buy it. Cloning isn't something I am against, but I prefer to get the original.

I usually only buy clones of fragrances that have been discontinued and the prices are high...and clone/dupes of niche/indie/designer scents that are way out of my price range...or hard to find in USA... Would like to win Metal Rain !!

What I liked about this review? Now I know that everything at BR is overpriced. I'll pick metal rain but won't buy it with my own money. Silver mountain from a discounter site would be a better investment.

its tough not purchasing clones, especially when they can give the same experience as their originals with much more cheaper. i only bought clones when they perform much better than the originals, example Aventus, LNDL. if the original is already good enough, ill save some money.

I like Grassland. I like how you explained your review philosophy. I don't feel strongly against clones but I understand why others might. Please enter me in the giveaway and good luck to you.

I enjoyed the this review by Sebastian. Coming from the fashion industry I totally understand the fine line in between clone and inspire. I, myself would totally support everything that is inspired by. Because that's where most of the creativity come from. Something have to be inspired to be created. But clone is something I don't support as Sebastian has said as well. I would not feel good to have my products copied and distributed with lower pricing and quality. As for these two bottles, I am a huge fan of mint. I like mint smell, mint candies, mint chocolates, and so on. So Glassland is my pick if I were to win a bottle of this. Hello from Los Angeles, CA.

I don't generally have a problem with clones. Especially so when they are not a straight up copy but more inspired by the original one. Plus in many cases the original one is higher quality so the clone doesn't end up giving you the same experience, but I can see where doing reviews of clones could be quite boring because smells doesn't really come through on youtube videos. Also as someone else already mentioned, I am pretty ok with clones of discontinued fragrances. Well anyway to me personally metal rain sounds more interesting. I am of the impression that Green Irish Tweed has been done to death at this point. Also I am a little particular about mint in fragrances. Thanks for the video and giveaway! I also wear V necks under my dress shirt. Mine are in gray though.

Hi there, I've been wearing Molecule 01 for many years and fancy a change along with the same notes, indiscreet freshness for day and night. What would you recommend? Thanks.

Metal rain also reminds me of Aventus a bit and maybe a bit of Mancera Cedrat but very watered down version.

Like that you reviewed something budget friendly and went in depth and specific on how it smells. Do not mind clones at all. I am sure niche houses get "inspirations" from other niche and designer houses so why cant more affordable houses/brands do the same?. Would love the opportunity to win metal rain. thank you.
