Never had a salesperson who was that solicitous of my feelings but a young lady at a John Wanamaker's department store spent at least an hour helping me select clothes for my senior year in high school decades ago. Whether or not she was working on commission, the young lady, who was probably just two or three years older than me, offered thoughtful suggestions for a wardrobe makeover that saw me through school then well into the start of college. I still remember the young lady's name and will think about her from time-to-time.

I would laugh harder but this is so true. At Banana we do ask “Hi, How are you today” to everyone that walks through the door. Company policy

I was a Store Manager for Banana Republic when this came out. They showed it at a conference. It was crickets. 🦗

I used to work in retail and this would happen often, the customer would respond “I’m just looking 😠 “ to anyone asking how they were. My friend started replying back with “and I’m just asking how you are?” Lol it kinda reminds them that they are being rude in a peaceful way . Wisdom!

I waited on Drew Barrymore looking for vintage jeans at a pricy vintage store in NY....she was super nice.

You know, retail working isn't easy. A lot of time, customers assume just because sales people are out there to take their money and become really condescending for no reason. At the end of the day, some of those people are single mothers who literally live paycheck to paycheck. Some of them are college students who work in retail to pay for room/board...they are being pressured by their manager everyday to make sales goal, and may come off a little too strong. Please be kind.

It was like this at Gap too. It's a huge deterrent. It's just asset protection.

This made me legit laugh out loud. As someone who worked retail and genuinely cared about how people were doing when I’d ask them, I can confirm… I swear if I had an alarm for everyone that answered “just looking”when I’d ask them, that alarm would’ve been going nonstop. People are SO RUDE to retail workers!!

I worked in retail, and they never tell us to ask them how people how they’re doing. Because it feels a little intrusive. We can welcome them, ask them if they’re finding everything okay, and if they need any help with anything. 😅

In 1999, NY minimum wage was $4.25/hour. So $6.15 for a store manager is still pretty sad. I made $8.25 an hour as the manager of a House of Almonds in 1992 and I was pretty stoked. LOL

1990s: Nobody knew how anybody was doing and people cared. 2020: Everybody knows how everybody's doing because of Facebook but realistically nobody cares.

When I heard $6.15 an hour it really put inflation in perspective for me

SO funny. Great! Will just adds so much on top of it. Hilarious. When they ask me at a BR I say “just looking”. Would be funny if they really did go into this emergency mode! I would laugh my head off.

At a grocery store the checkout clerk asked every person in line, "What are you doing today?", and "What do you do for a living?" When it was my turn I was already annoyed and I just replied, "Nothing" and "None of your business". Sometimes these over enthusiastic clerks don't understand the customer just wants attentive service, and we did not come to their store to find new friends.

This just happened to me at Hot Topic.

Even though that's only 9.50 an hour today, housing prices weren't 80% of the average annual income, you could actually get rent that was 1/3 of your monthly income back then. Wealth inequality has skyrocketed in recent years and concentration of resources has sucked the middle class dry. Nobody's doing fine today.

Think it was the late 90's when instead of saying "Do you need some help". became "How are you doing today". Pushed to extremes I believe some chain stores may have reached such extremes as a feedback qualifier for customer satisfsction turned inside out 🤪🤮🥴😧😜

This is sadly how many of these types of clothing store's employees are trained.

Drew's character made a couple of good points.

When did America stop asking "how are you?" as "how are you doing?" seems a bit of an odd question to a Brit like me. makes me think "doing what?" Some Australians ask : "How are you going?" Makes you think " going where? I just got here. " or "i'll probably go by car." We would say both things but only about specific things like asking about a projects.... "How are you doing with the project?" Otherwise we'd just ask how you are, if you are ok etc.

This is why now online shopping exists. 🤣

They where all so very talented in this period of the show. Some great skits came out of these years, it was great to watch it every Saturday and to see the new weeks show.
