Apparently Col Sink told Speirs he should have just shot the replacement. According to Winter’s memoirs, Speirs held a banquet in honour of the brain surgeon who saved Sgt Grants life. Buck ended up in Paris after he was taken off the line and Malarkey lived with him when he was sent to Paris by Winters (depicted in this episode). I saw an interview with Malarkey a while back where he was talking about their exploits. I think they did all get together before they went home but you will note that Malarkey wasn’t in that final scene but that was because the actor that played him didn’t manage to get to the filming of that scene in time - if I remember correctly he missed his train and therefore missed the shoot.

My dad fought in Europe during WW2. 95th Infantry Division 'The Iron Men of Metz'. He passed away in 1996. You couldn't get my dad to talk much about what he went thru, I could tell he still fought that war until the day he died.

Major Winters didn't actually allow the surrendering Colonel to keep his side arm. He took it. After the war he figured out that the pistol had never actually been fired so he kept it and never fired it.

My grandfathers fought in WWII one in Europe , other in the Pacific. One was 82nd Airborne other was on a destroyer. Both saw men die, but they both told me they never once regretted doing their duty and serving.
