Yes, the US did in fact have snipers, more commonly referred to as Sharpshooters, in WWII. They went through an Advanced Marksmanship course at Camp Perry in Ohio (but there was no 'official' sniper course). In the field, they were not typically used in the same way Axis forces did. Moreover, they were often misused and primarily used as scouts as they were looked down upon by much of the army brass because their fieldcraft did not fit in with their notions of large scale troop engagements vs. the sniper's stalking (sneaking and killing from afar).

9:36 the miniseries doesn’t show it, but at the real life Crossroads battle, Winters had two Browning .30cal machine guns providing cover fire for the guys charging across the field. If you want to learn how many of these actual battles took place, look up the Operations Room video on the subject. They pretty much covered all the real life battles that were in the miniseries.

We had no idea until after his death, when we found it hidden away with a letter he received after the war from someone in his unit. I knew the subway train scene would get you! It gets me all the time. How these men lived with that PTSD for the rest of their lives is beyond me. They were just starting to understand combat fatigue, as they called it, in the middle of the pacific campaign. They realized that what they thought was a psychological condition some people had prior to enlistment, and came out during stress, was really a condition all soldiers would develop in prolonged intense combat. Most of these men came home with Post Traumatic Stress and one symptom of that is avoidance. So they avoided talking about it and the war in general, and had families and lives and went on as best they could. As they got older they eventually had to deal with it as spouses passed or kids grew up and they retired. There was a sharp increase in that generation seeking VA psychiatric help in the 80s and 90s. Ammo Dump - what they would called and Ammunition Supply Point.

It's hard to have a favorite episode because they are all so good, but I think this one is mine. There aren't many leaders in the military who are as complete as Winters was. During my 20 years of service I only had one CO like him. He was motivated by a strong desire to take care of his men, and it drove him to be the best he could be. “Oh, I’ve got goosebumps!” Always makes me smile. Back in the 14th/15th Century the city of London was divided into two halves. North of the river Thames was respectable, south of the river Thames was less respectable and full of inns and theatres. Such establishments were taxed by the church and the Bishop of Winchester. He also taxed the brothels and prostitutes who worked that part of London. Such ladies had a nickname, Winchester Geese, and if you spent too long in their company you would catch any number of diseases some of which gave you horrible bumpy skin conditions, or Goosebumps!!!! In regards to the German army, it can basically be split into two groups. The regular German Army, called the Werhmacht, was Germany’s national army, which existed before the Nazi take over of Germany, and still exists today. In WW2, this is the force where German citizens who were drafted would go. The second group is called the SS, which is short for Schutzstaffel, or “Protection Squad”. The SS started out as Hitler’s personal body guards, and later morphed into the paramilitary arm of the Nazi party. Tlrd, the SS are the ones who ran the concentration camps, conducted assassinations of Hitler’s enemies, things like that. By the time WW2 had started, the SS had also developed a branch called the Waffen SS. The Waffen SS was a full on army, with tanks and artillery, etc, and who’s soldiers were all members of the SS. To be in the Werhmacht, you only had to be German, or one of the conquered peoples that Germany forced into their main army. To be in the SS, you had to be a Nazi. The SS recruited from all of the territories that Germany took over, so there was more than just Germans in it. The SS were also known for dressing up unarmed occupied people in military uniforms, and using them as a human shield. The Wehrmacht is loyal to Germany, the SS were loyal to Hitler and the Nazi party. WW2 Nazi propaganda claimed that the Waffen SS was Germany’s “elite” army, superior to the regular Werhmacht. The SS did receive superior equipment and gear, but the Wehrmacht will always argue that the Waffen SS was mostly talk and show, and the Wehrmacht was the more successful German fighting force.

The end of this episode is powerful and shows the retreating infantry from the Ardennes, defeated, and the Airborne thrown in to fill the holes. The Battle of the Bulge was a major point on the western front. The Aliied leadership was too over-confident and got a little butt-kicking here as the Germans showed they still had some fight left in them. This is mostly historically accurate that they threw the Airborne into Bastogne so quickly they didn't have time to properly resupply them, lack of winter clothing, etc. The end of this episode shows the true meaning of heroism from these men. While everyone else was leaving, they were going into the fight.

You are correct in saying that you don't like to judge the soldiers based on their government. A lot of the German soldiers were just following orders, and would have been considered traitors if they disobeyed. The USA is similar in that regard (or at least used to be). A prime example would be the Vietnam war. Those soldiers were treated like crap by their country, both from the government, and the citizens. As horrific as war is for any soldier, the fact that the country you fought for spits on you, I can only imagine the devastation that a soldier feels. This is why a lot of Vietnam vets suffered greatly after the war between PTSD, drug addiction, homelessness, and suicide. I imagine German soldiers during WWII suffered in similar ways. But in most countries, you're not allowed to have any sympathy for Germany whatsoever.

If you want to hate Hatet the oligarchs who start the wars but never fight in them. When you're on the line and in moments of calm you must respect your opponents. Regardless of the uniform they are in they may truly be fighting for honorable reasons. In the heat of battle, you really don't have time to think about it. 25:47 they aren’t actually “dumping out all the ammo.” An “ammo dump” is a collection point of all the company’s ammo needed for the unit. From there, the ammo gets distributed out to the units that need it. During the Battle of the Bulge, the Germans overran many American supply depots, which is why the guy was running ammunition back and forth.

@@krisfrederick5001 It was the weak section in the allied lines. The Germans attacked with half their reinforcements, initially a quarter of a million men and growing to nearly half a million, but not enough to back up the breakthrough and push on to recapture the deep water port of Antwerp. The airborne troops were holding a hub in the road network and stalling a lot of German vehicles in the process. They held until they got surrounded on Dec 21, but still had a fair defensive pocket around Bastogne. Bastogne was also where the wounded and civilians were evacuated too so they weren't going to abandon them. And as much as I like the next episode, Patton's Third Army did save them. They moved three divisions over a hundred miles in 48 hours and engaged the German troops surrounding Bastogne on the 21st, the day they completed the encirclement. Eventually six of Patton's divisions, nearly 100,000 troops, were engaged in the relief effort. They completely broke through on the 26th. Any other General besides Patton would have taken more than a week to engage and the 101st would have been over run by then.

This phrase was from The Lone Ranger, a radio program which later was a tv series and a movie. Silver was the name of the Lone Ranger’s horse. Winters has moved up to 2nd in command of 2nd Battalion, the executive officer (usually said XO, sometimes S1), the man in charge of personnel in the battalion. Nixon is S2 (intelligence) one level up at regimental level. Winters will still "command" Easy (and Dog and Fox) but it isn't his job to "lead" them anymore. Orderly = officer's assistant. Makes sure the officer is fed and properly dressed (so he doesn't waste time looking after himself), Winter's one also can type, a nice bonus. By the way, the British Army calls the same job "batman" (cricket term), which leads to a lot of jokes, "Alfred (his butler) is Batman's batman." for example.

He said he would leave the hospital again to get back to the front lines, so the hospital let him go, if his court-martial papers did get sent back to the 101st they were likely ignored because by they were in the Battle of the Bulge and couldn’t afford to lose a combat experienced NCO.

About the sniper in the team, Shifty Powers was a very skilled shot and he's shown in the series firing a (very accurate) 30.06 bolt action rifle. It didn't fire as quickly as the M1 Garand everyone else had, but it was particularly deadly in the hands of a skilled marksman. About using the 101st as troops at Bastogne: they were the most combat ready, skilled troops available in what was obviously an emergency situation. They were never meant to be used like regular infantry, but it was understandable that they were brought up to plug what had become a big gap in the lines as other infantry were mauled.

I know it's a question from the last video, but Holland was the Western coast of the Netherlands that was its own province under the Holy Roman Empire between the 10th and 16th centuries. It was self-ruling and still holds the three largest Dutch cities; Rotterdam (largest port in Europe), The Hague, and Amsterdam. "Holland" has been used for centuries to refer to the Netherlands. The Netherlands officially stopped all domestic use of "Holland" to refer to itself in regards of legal documents and official papers of the government in 2020. Holland (the province) is still the most influential part of the Netherlands. For comparison, you can compare how big cities in US states determine political statutes for the entire rest of their respective states to Holland's influence over everything in the Netherlands.

Yeah, they were in a bad shape in Bastogne. But reading up on different fronts of the war. The Russians had it even worse. They went into the war with just pitchforks, or whatever farm implements that could be used as a weapon, in a lot of cases. They just didn’t have guns for everyone, but everyone wanted to fight. When it’s said this is the Greatest Generation, it’s true, across all the Allies. Later on, ppl that are informed don’t really hold it against the German soldiers, just the SS division. They were the ones that committed/oversaw the atrocities at Hitler’s command.

Some of the most grim moments of the first world war were incidences of generals deploying their men in horrific conditions while being inadequately equipped for the offensives they had planned. One of the worst was Conrad von Hotzendorf who ordered Austro-Hungarian forces to attack well fortified russian positions, high up in the mountains, during winter, with only their summer uniforms. Huge number of casualties from the weather alone. Where the russian defences were in the mountains, the Austro-Hungarian army couldn't bring their heavy artillery guns with them, and this was before air support was really invented. Freezing to death, attacking russian trenches with machine gun nests and artillery support, who held the high ground over a mostly open field that the Austro-Hungarian soldiers would have to cross to reach them, wearing summer uniforms in the middle of winter. Three times. Hotzendorf ordered his men to attack those positions three separate times, and to no one's surprise, they were never able to break through the russian lines and take the position. Just awful.

In real life, when they charged the crossroads, Winters arrived first and alone literally because he was in better shape than all the rest of the men. In real life, they all took off running together and Winters got to the crossroads first because he was a fucking Chad.

The problem many people in command had was, they took the right decision but war is war, you can do everything right but people will die. Many of them, in their older years, battled with the fact of overthinking "If I had done this, or that, this soldier would still be alive" when the outcome was completely out of their hands.

When you're done with this series, please watch "We Stand Alone Together." It is a documentary with interviews of a lot of these men. Made around 2000.

The lieutenant who brought the ammunition in the jeep is an honest to god hero himself. He and two other volunteers made nine trips back and forth to bring needed supplies to Easy Company and the other companies in the 501st. The last three trips were made *after* the Germans had encircled the 501st, meaning that he could have easily been captured and killed. He was preparing a tenth trip when he was specifically ordered to stand down by his commanding officer. For his valor he was awarded a Silver Star for valor.
