Winters talked about the charge across the field, some time after the event. He actually started running at the same time as the rest of his men (apparently the red smoke grenade wasn't a thing), but he quickly outpaced them all and got up to the ridge of the road several seconds before them, and started firing at the German soldiers. He said it appeared as if everyone else, his men and the Germans, were moving in slow motion, while he was the only one moving, aiming, shooting and reloading at the normal speed. This isn't an uncommon thing when your brain is working on overspeed and your body is washed in adrenaline, so I'm sure it was Winters' subjective experience. HOWEVER, I've always gotten chills when I think about how maybe that wasn't the case that day, and that Winters just happened to unlock some godly speed buff, and his men would have seen him race ahead of them, and the Germans would have watched in horror as he was aiming, shooting and reloading with the speed of a demon..! o.O
Winters felt like his abilities were wasted as battalion XO. He thought Crossroads was Easy Co finest hour. And he didn’t like the portrayal of him on the train with the young boy. He felt like it made it look like he was picking the kid up.
I never get tired enjoying this series for the first time vicariously, it's just timeless. Imagine Spielberg and Hanks never documented these amazing stories in this way. I can't honestly. This is the episode when Tom Hanks literally takes the reigns in the series...becoming more introspective with Winters. The back and forth between the gunfire and typewriter is perfect and poetic. Long before PTSD was even taken seriously. General Patton famously addressed it with the back of his hand on a soldiers face. Oh and if any of you come across any bacon sandwiches, let me know. Well Imagine being Winters and having to shoot anything new, cos it's usually a german soldier to kill Winters. so any new face poses a threat even if it's from an allie. I cant even imagine the issues each individual had to deal with. Makes me hold my grandfather in high regarde cos He live and made it through Hell. He was inthese fights. Maybe not easy Co. But was at many "hotspots". in history. I still have his News papers from the war. Wild mate!
NOT A SPOILER BUT..... This was the beginning of the BATTLE OF THE BULGE when Hitler made a last desperate move to turn the tide in his favor through the ardine forrest. The allies were caught completely off guard. Its brutal for the next few episodes.
Cross roads separate here and there. Before the cross roads few have PTSD, after, well... Before, the old men could sleep on cold nights, after they have nightmares of Bastogne. Oh, bit of history; The Germans came through the Arden forrest and surprised the French in 1939. The French did not reinforce Bastogne in then neutral Belgium, instead keepig the Maginot Line well manned. That decision is reason #248 why France fell. The US replaced the decimated troops with whatever was on hand. That was a paratroopers who were under supplied because they were about to go back to Paris to prepare for their next jump.
