The airborne troops did not have the manpower or resources to keep prisoners on D-Day.

My Uncle, Sgt Louis B (Shorty) Flores from Louisiana, joined the Regiment after Toccoa but before D-Day. He was never seriously wounded so made it through every operation. Watching this was like finally finding out what he went through, and who with. Especially since, later in his life, he recommended i read the book this series is based on...as he said it was very accurate. And in my view, the series was very faithful to the book. Uncle Shorty had some great stories - most of which i heard second hand through my Dad, I think he only told some of them once or twice - and actually did come back with a Luger! lol. He also spoke very highly of Winters. My Uncle was an amazing guy, and a great influence on my life.

This was their first time in combat. Nearly all the men interviewed said that they took chances that day they never would again (Lipton climbing a tree for a firing position; Malarkey going after a Luger). They got lucky for the most part.

7 Km is approximately 4.4 miles. The soldier (Sgt Guarnere) who didn't wait for Winters' command was in Easy Co. from the beginning, at Camp Toccoa. Guarnere's complaint that Winters doesn't drink is he's worried about Winters being a Quaker, a religion with tenets which include pacifism. Their objective was to destroy 4 guns. Not machine guns but cannons which were shelling troops landing at Utah Beach. Easy Co. destroyed 3 guns and then Lt. Spiers asked if he and his men from Dog Co. could take out the 4th.

I recommend that you watch "Saving Private Ryan", the movie that largely 'spawned' "Band of Brothers". Unforgettable movie.

“Training”,yes!Everyone knew where to go before they jumped.They all studied the maps and sand tables so they knew the terrain,roads,buildings and any reference point that would keep them on the straight and narrow.

Didn’t see episode 1, but found your channel due to this masterpiece in filmmaking, the best series ever. These men of that Greatest Generation are my heroes, think I’ll join this journey with you…see what you do.

Great reaction! All the actors are playing the old men from the beginning (as this is all true events, unlike Saving Private Ryan which was fiction).

@11:25 Guarnere is part of Winter's company. He's the guy that found out (from the letter) right before the Invasion that his brother was killed in Italy. He opened fire early before Winter's command, because he was angry about the death of his bother. Edit: Saw you recalled later. A lot of people watching this never make that realization about Guarnere's attitude.

yeah, Bill didn't have a weapon and the ambush scene is almost all wrong to how it really was.

Basic paratroop strategy: drop behind enemy lines capture whatever objective planned (usually, but not always, a bridge or town where roads meet) then your forces catch up to them and all is hunky'dory. Problem is, if your forces don't win elsewheer you have light infantry that is surrounded and they have only the supplies they carried with them. And you probably over estimate tanks. If I may suggest a video,I would like to recommend a video diary from Ron Livingston, the actor who played Lt. Nixon. He documented the training each actor had to go through. Each actor had to use his character’s name. They also to go through a shortened version of infantry training and jump training. It very interesting and it doesn’t give any spoilers. Oh, you may need to know ranks. Private (regular guy), Corporal, Sargeant, (Big step to real officers), Second Lieutenant, Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Colonel, General. This only US Army -varies with other countries and the Navy - and is simplified with stuff you don't need omitted.

It's not just a military thing with the drinking,,,in America overall the average person consumed 3-5 times the amount of alcohol than today,,,so a person that didn't drink at all was not common

13:46 don't feel too bad. I've watched a million BoB reactions, and practically nobody puts together why Guarnere does what he does at first. But what would really surprise you is how many reactors *still* fail to put it together, even after the show spells it out for you in that moment, either because they missed that dialogue, or because media literacy is just that dead. So, you're still ahead of the curve :p

Easy's raid on the guns confuses some people because they don't see the point of destroying the guns. Basically they weren't in a position to hold the ground permanently, but they were in a position to take it briefly and disable it as a useful position for the Germans, then run back to their own lines. Like hit-and-run.

The point of destroying the guns was those guns were firing on the US troops landing on Utah beach (destroying them meant the troops could land safely).

Well, this is when the sh*t gets real. "We're not lost Private...we're in Normandy." This one line displays Winter's ability to instill confidence in his men, even unarmed in the face of all adversity. And this soldier wasn't even a member of Easy Company. Currahee ♠

Not to be difficult, but please don't keep referring to their purpose and motivation to be there as "for glory". The vast, vast majority of these men were there to do a difficult, dangerous, often fatal job - fight an evil, oppressive power looking to annex a large portion of the planet. It's not being melodramatic to say that democracy and freedom were at stake

The portrayal of Spiers was very inaccurate. Its true that he and two of his men shot surrendering Germans, in both cases, it was as they were trying to make their way to the assembly area. They had no way to take prisoners. In the first case it was 3 Germans that tried to surrender and they shot them, in the 2nd case it was 3 or 4. You can argue it was wrong, but they were behind enemy lines, outnumbered and 3 soldiers could not guard 7-8 prisoners and still try to get to their rally point. Ambrose knew this but still went with rumors vs the truth.

​@@Knowledgeispower482According to the actor that played him Spiers didn't want anything to do with this show until after they had already filmed it. They would have probably changed his storylines had they known about the inaccuracies. They had no problem changing major storylines if one of the vets said it didn't happen this way but the real Spiers was not available. He was also hesitant at first to go to one of the premieres because he was afraid he might be arrested for war crimes so who knows what else really went down. After the real winters gave his approval to the show and it got good reception Spiers became supportive of it and even befriended some of the actors so I highly doubt his portrayal was that far off.

@@maxpayne232 from what I have read and seen, Ambrose knew of the inaccuracies but went with what is in BOB. I am sure that he supported the overall series and befriended the actors. I am a huge fan, but there were several glaring inaccuracies in the series, one is the execution of the Germans, Blythe's death was another and some of the information in the defense of Bastogne were wrong. The run Spiers did thru Foy was actually longer and was downplayed a little for believability. By all accounts it was an amazing run. But I also understand that its a series and a lot of liberties were take. But still one of my favorites series.
