Fun fact the VA who plays Bon Clay also plays the hypnotist Jango! He plays multiple characters throughout the series and he's in his 70s now still playing roles in the show.

Pell surviving the explosion is the biggest mystery of OP 😂

I think one of the huge reasons Bon Clay became a fan favorite was that he was allowed to be a rounded person with changing loyalties. He was an outspoken queer character represented in a time where queer characters were regulated to strictly evil to the core characters. It was refreshing to have him be a person that would defend bonds of friendship to the point of self sacrifice even though his friendship with the StrawHats was so new. That’s at least how I explain why I liked him so much after these episodes.

There was a thing in an interview, between a United States writer and a Japanese one, and the Japanese writer couldn't wrap his head around us feeling less about a death of a character, and the story having less stakes because someone came back. In his mind their were too different parts. The stakes were still their in that moment he says, characters coming back is separate. Then he goes to state, If your Grandparents died and then come back a year later wouldn't you feel happy that they came back. So they see it as in a more realistic scenario, not in a writing perspective. Another thing is they type of series this is. In the Interview the guy states that if he wanted to make people feel sad the whole time about his character death he would have wrote a Seinen. Seinen is intended for Adults, while Shonen is intended for teens. Their is supposed to be less death is Shonen because its intended to be watched by younger audiences. Even Oda the creator of One Piece we learned had issues with characters getting killed in the live action. So the main thing with the Pell death verses not death is its more of a cultural difference.

The Bon Clay love makes a lot more sense now, doesn't it? He could have escaped. Instead, in the name of friendship, he gave up his freedom. Can't hate a person like that. Pell… that caused problems. Almost enough to fans away. But Oda has stated he does not like killing off (named) characters. Backstories don't count.

Oda the author and his crew member went to a restraunt. And they met a little girl cried about pell's death. So Oda revived him. Oda said it at 2008 Jump Festival.

Vivi has been in the crew for more than half the episodes so far, appearing first in episode 62, and in a saga that revolved around her (the alabasta saga, starting back in the laboon arc). I get why you'd feel her departure to be a heavy moment.

Pell's tomb stone scene doesn't removes the stake its shows you how powerful Devil Fruit eaters can be in One Piece. Its broadens your horizon to what is actually can be possible if powerful characters as these are not just given free rein to do whatever they want but are Pirates!

The Mugiwara crew's disappointment was paid off when Vivi couldn't come along instead with the figure of Nico Robin the Archaeologist... This journey will be even more interesting.... Talking about Fell who is still alive, we were also fooled by Oda, we were already mourning his heroic rescue but it turned out he was still safe, maybe Oda was planning something, keep going...

Nobody liked Pell surviving that bomb. It kinda solidified the fact that everyone in One Piece is just built different for surviving everything that are fatal. I don't know if it's true but if you search for the reason why in the internet, apparently Oda's editors didn't want Pell to die because of what's going on at the time of publication. 9/11 happened and war is breaking out in the middle east and apparently they don't want to show more negative stuff to the Japanese audience.

Pell's fake out death is one of the most disliked things in the fanbase, myself included. It does remove the stakes and it's one of my biggest complaints with One Piece. Some deaths don't stick in this series, even when they should. That being said, when the gloves do finally come off, they stay off and the deaths do hit pretty damn hard. You just have to weather through a few fake outs every so often.

I thyink I mentioned this before just before Baratie, it really bothers me that the LA decided to show him messing up on the one thing he alone can do in the crew, especially because tends to play make believe to help with his confidence, and being a good shot is something that sets him apart, makes him feel good. History will soon call this an illusion, but to me it's the only truth." In Arlong park, Johnny and Yosaku had this speech about how the Cocoyashi folk ought to etch the images of those men in their minds, sounded really epic. And thing is, Oda has any such epic lines that feel like throw away lines, then you realise later on the weight of these words. Dont take the no death thing too seriously. A lot of people still die in one piece. There are just a few notable examples of people coming back, and people run with that. I'd say there are more deaths in one piece than most shonen have. Also, there is a spoiler reason that people are tougher in that world

Pell is the most outrageous fakeout death in One Piece. Not a single fan is okay with that. But don't worry, people can die in One Piece, it just doesn't happen as often as in other anime.

Pell did not die because editor didn't want him die due to 9/11 attack (manga chapter was released on that date) and they thought it would be sensitive topic.

He understood that being born a king was a lucky draw. He did not have some divine right to rule, he was just a man born with a job. “No such thing as a naked king” shouldn’t be such a bar as it is!

Pell is probably the most memed on death fake out in One Piece, people simply do not buy the idea of him surviving at all.

Yeah if every One Piece fan was polled, we'd all have different issues with the story at various points, but if there's one thing everyone can agree on, it's that Pell should have died regardless if you subscribe to the conspiracy theory that his fate was changed due to it being written around September 2001 or not. The good news is, in One Piece's thousands of chapters with many main and side characters constantly facing peril there is no egregious example quite like the bird man, it's a sour spot for survival belivability. And perhaps, because Oda recognized that Pell never does anything ever again, so he might as well have died. And if I get replies saying "oh such and such later on is just as bad" 1. no it isnt. 2. dont spoil the band. and 3. Christopher Nolan totally ripped this off for The Dark Knight Rises

Man these last episodes of Alabasta have a special place in my heart, Bon clay being a good friend till the end was really sweet, Vivi's goodbye is such an iconic moment (it makes sense for her to remain in Alabasta), and now we have a new member in the crew, our misterious girl Nico Robin aka Robin-swan

Not sure if you guys are skipping fillers but do check out episode 131 on your own free time if you are. It's is a wonderful episode that will forever live in my head cannon. I feel it captures the "down time" of the the straw hat crew adventuring and interacting perfectly. Particular the moments with Robin and Chopper

Probably the most convincing theory I’ve heard about the Pell death retcon is that Oda intended to kill Pell, but editors felt it would be insensitive due to the proximity of the events happening in the manga to the 9/11 terror attacks. I mean, later on there are things that *might* explain how he survived, but there was absolutely no precedent set for Pell to survive something like this here. They could even have given me an extra scene as the bomb detonated where he let go of it and was thrown away and injured by the blast and it would’ve been totally fine.

Someone probably explained it but Oda's it's not 💯 confirmed but it's believed Oda's original plan was to have pell die. But he changed it in the Manga due to the manga chapters at that time being a little after 9/11 so that is the biggest theory of why he is alive.

It's crazy that these episodes contain one of the best plot twists, while also having both one of the best, and one of the worst moments in the series.

first Grand Line Saga in the bag, and from the thumbnail, it seems like we have a +1 on board. this was spoiled for me when i watched the Intro as soon as Chopper was in the group, they spoiled it almost 30 eps early. course Japan's response to that would be "should be reading the Manga". aint no shot that people reading every single Manga before they watch an Anime, give me a break.

Yeah, get used to this. It's a reoccuring thing early on in the show. People die, rest assured, a lot of people die. Early One Piece really pulls its punches, but when a character dies, you know 100%, its not vague. It hits hard too. Edit - Especially in the current manga arc which the anime just got to, there are a lot of named character deaths.

I know that I am really late with this comment since you are already so far ahead in the story and you probably won't neither read it nor answer to me but I got to say that I'm really glad about your comments concerning Pell surviving that bomb. It's really refreshing seeing some reactors not liking how Pell survived that and complaining how there is no stakes in One Piece since it seems that nobody dies in the show. That's precisely one of the reasons which prevented me from totally loving this show first times that I've watched these episodes back when they were more or less airing for the first time. You're probably the first reactors that I have seen for a very long time who had the courage to say something negative about it. Now I really love One Piece, throughout the years it became one of my favorite anime of all time but that doesn't mean that I am always going to like or accept everything that happens or is going to happen in the story. It almost seems like most reactors doesn't have the gut to openly criticize or say anything too negative about this show considering how many people love it and are fans of it. I remember that at the time I much preferred Naruto over One Piece in the period when Naruto, One Piece and Bleach were the most popular shounen Anime/Manga. At least in Naruto or even Bleach, characters actually died and you could really feel how the stakes were high in those shows. But I don't want you to feel discouraged by all of this and to totally lower your guards when it comes to characters deaths and stakes in One Piece. I am not going to spoil anything specific to you about future arcs so don't worry about it. The thing is that sooner or later there are finally going to be some actual deaths in the show and not only in flashbacks, you can trust me in that😉

In a sea of fake outh deaths in this anime (Oda has serious trouble killing anyone in present time, no matter how crazy it is, better get used to it) Pell is easily the worst one. He was cool and all but this is ridiculous😅 Igaram at least made sense once it became clear Robin was playing both sides. Some people keep saying that it's cause of 9/11, but it's just a baseless rumor that spread around a lot, and if it were true Oda could have easily just cut the whole bomb sequence after they stopped it the first time.

One piece is an amazing story but death is one of its biggest flaws. Outside of flashback, characters don't die. And sometimes even in flashbacks unfortunately

My favorite crew member, Nico Robin, joins the Straw Hats. I think and hope you guys will grow to like her; she brings a very different energy to the crew, as you've already seen. As for how Pell survived- potential SPOILERS/SPECULATION below. Even by One Piece standards, Zoan Devil Fruit users are **stupidly** tough and durable. So my best guess for Pell's survival is that his falcon form was able to 'ride' the shock-wave of the explosion, while the toughness and durability granted to him by his Devil Fruit reduced the damage from "instantly lethal" to "one foot in the grave." That's just my speculation/guess work as to an in-universe explanation though. To this day, I don't believe that we've ever received an official reason for how he survived. It's definitely divisive, but it is what it is.

Vivi will definitely do her speech at the end, with Den Den Mushi Loudspeakers all over the kingdom..they will have to explain that those were gifted to the kingdom just now by the marines, or they were Missing this whole time, Crocodile confiscated them or made em disappear by Drying the environment, cz snails go in hiding in too much dryness. Cz the first time LA watchers will straight up complain, "If this kingdom had these loudspeakers, why didn't Vivi just entered her palace and told the whole kingdom just like that, the truth about this whole civil war"

It's just about following a pattern and rules of a Publishing agency for the target audience..Shonen vs Seinen in this case..plus this was in the 2000s, modern Shonen is finally killing more n more, to a point it started pissing readers off😂

Even though there is technically an explanation for Pell being alive, it's not a satisfying one at all, lol. I'm usually way more forgiving of fake out deaths than most people, but they're also usually more plausible than this. I even like Pell much more than the more warmonger-y Jackal guy, and it still doesn't sit right with me.
