Banda forest is part of the western ghats in Maharashtra. Do not mix it up with Banda Forest in Uttar Pradesh.
It is located around 35 kms from Sawantwadi railway station. It is small village near the Goa - Maharashtra border. At the edge of the village there is a forest which links to Amboli Ghat Forest & Western ghats. It is situated on the banks of River Terekhol.
Banda is named after the god Bandeshwar, a Jagrit Swayambhu Shivalinga. In ancient times, Banda was known as Adilabad in the reign of Adilshahi. Evidences of his reign can still be seen in the form of Redeghumat, Bailghumat and other ancient constructions in and around the town. Adil was defeated by the Portuguese. During the time of Shivaji, the name Adilabad changed to Banda after the deity Lord Bandeshwar. The more than 300 years old Temple of Lord Bandeshwar is being renovated. There are 12 Shivalingas inside the Garbhgriha of the temple.
The Terekhol river bridge was constructed in 1961 by the government of Maharashtra for transportation between Goa and Maharashtra state. The bridge was the only connecting bridge or link between Goa and Maharashtra until 1999. Mumbai-Goa national highway (NH-17) passes through Banda. Around 7,000 trees across 32 acres of forest land at Banda had been cut down in 2014 between December 2013 and January 2014 to make way for a toll plaza on NH-17. the area is also an elephant corridor. Moreover, it is now among the villages on the list of eco-sensistive areas declared in Nov 2013. But a month later, in December 2013, the tree authority of of the Sawantwadi forest department allowed 1,279 trees to be cut. However, Now the same tree authority has said that while permission was given to cut 1,279 trees, Maharashtra's border check-post authorities had cut an additional 5,429 trees.
In 2017, ‘Chanda to Banda’, a state-level publicity campaign for 50 crore plantation drive was kicked off by forest minister Sudhir Mungantiwar on May 1, Maharashtra Day, from his hometown Chandrapur (Nagpur).
One can spot nearly 300 species of birds at Banda.
Famous birding hotspots at Banda are Bhide’s Homestay, Shree Waghbilleshwar mandir (kas) and banks of River Terekhol at Arosbag bridge which is also a Crocodile point. One can sit for hours at one place i.e. at Bhide’s homestay and Shree Waghbileshwar mandir wherein we can see multiple birds.
Common birds at Banda are the Great Hornbill, Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher (ODKF), Black napped Blue Monarch, Vigor sunbird, Grey headed green pigeon, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Fulvetta, Rufous wood pecker, white cheek barbet, Nilgiri flowerpecker, Indian Pitta, Orange Headed Thrush, Emeral dove, spotted dove, Flame back woodpecker, 8 types of Owls etc.
Some scenic view points at banda are the river front where one can watch crocodiles at Crocodile point Insuli and Palm Civet cat. However, it is not easy to locate them without a guide. We book our tour through Mr. Abhishek 9822952233 who made all the arrangements for us. He has tie ups with local guide Pravin Satoskar (094235 98986). Pravin has two hides at Banda for ODKF specially. We saw watch White Rump Shama, Black hooded oriole, Malabara Giant Squirrel, Greater Racket Tail Drongo, Blue Monarch, and Spider Hunter around the hide.
Western Ghats is the best place to visit the bird. Best period to visit the bird is during monsoon when the bird is engaged in courtship display to attract it’s mate or during winter from November to Januray when migratory birds & warblers also start visiting.
