You can tell from the jump he didn’t want to hit he wanted to see his friends again so he did it. Also, this show was huge to me as a kid. It’s how I learned Dave Diamond owned the airport right by me. I went to the restaurant and ordered like $100 in food before I started asking for him so they couldn’t boot me. I did see him, he waved and the lady was like “that kid likes Berlin” he didn’t seem happy.. like dude VH1 was just here lol. Oh well. He still rules.
If it wasn’t for paul reynolds guitar playing, I’m sure I Ran wouldn’t have been a good song, paul reynolds was their secret weapon, no wonder why the band broke up after he left
He definitely had a distinctive sound that was immediately identifiable as Flock of Seagulls. There’s also a kind of magic that happens when he tears into those synth-backed power chords. For those of us who lived through those early days of M Tv, Flock of Seagulls’ music transports you right back to the halcyon days of the early 80s.
UdayMotwani. They did but I don't think any of them could work with Mike Scores ego anymore and they had to escape from it.He was probably making their life hell and didn't see it,itn just exploded around him
Paul Reynolds seems a really nice guy. Really felt for him and the the difficulties he went through. Hope he is happy wherever he is...deserves to be happy.
The personality’s of Ali Frank and Paul shine through , Mike is still all ego , he can tour with his ever changing line up of flock of imposters, they could have done a tour from this like kajagoogoo did , took the money and ran but you can see all mike is thinking is me and the imposter’s can get a tour out of this, Paul is a genius on guitar and like all geniuses troubled, they were trying but it wasn’t there until Paul started playing and boom it was a flock of seagulls again, frank really worked to get Paul to be at ease, I hope the audience know how privileged they are to have witnessed that performance, mom score rocks
I really feel for Paul too, being thrown into the massive pressure cooker known as the music industry at such a young age and then doing 158 straight shows. That is tough for anyone to cope with, let alone a young kid (14 when he first joined and 17 when they first cut an album!)
I watched this at the age of 50, and it brought tears to my eyes knowing how much this band meant so much to me during those high school years. We traded this album back and forth among friends. I loved seeing where and how they went their separate ways. One of the best parts was seeing mum watching her boys reunite. So happy to see so much positive still there.
Watched this is September of 2023 and it also brought tears to my eyes seeing them play. I saw them in 1983 at the Greek theater in Los Angeles. It was my first concert ever. I was only 12 years old and they were my favorite band. So many good memories listening to their music. Mike still tours and I saw him at a small new wave club in bellflower California in 2008. I met him and shared a drink. Good times!
Paul Reynolds is an absolute FANTASTIC guitar player!! I was so impressed at how great he was at the reunion! Nice job guys! Great to see you all together again. :)
@@trollgoodman7808 yes agreed but they all made it special. The lead guitar was/is gifted and the bassist and drummer completed the perfect set up known to mankind. This group will always rock!
That's truly hilarious Mark, given the fact that U2 formed years before A Flock of Seagulls and Edge already had developed his signature delayed guitar sound. :-)
Nice try. But do some research before smearing a legend like the Edge. I don't know how you copy someones style when U2 was already touring and putting out records before Flock of Seagulls even formed. How about just saying they're both great guitarist. Which they are.
Paul Reynolds is a good guitar player. But like so many guitarists of the day and the past 30 years, he copied the style of Edge from U2. Edge is a legend, not Reynolds.
This is surprisingly moving. Caught me off guard. When those power chords ripped through the venue it was like the magic was back. Even after years and years of wandering in the wilderness you can go home again.
this was filmed in the 2000's where they were trying to get away from a lot of the styles of the 80's they're definitely quite stylish by modern standards tho!
he was clearly trying hard in the 80s to look older by wearing them, hiding behind the fact that he was indeed 15. I cant imagine the sex drugs and rock'n'roll he was getting backstage at age 15 to have had a blowout like that ..daym
This is my favorite of the "bands reunited" series. I always loved A Flock of Seagulls surreal, new wave sound. They still had that great chemistry for this show, and all of them were on their game. Paul is an amazing guitar player, for sure. The ONE thing that was made absolutely clear in this video is that the root problem that probably drove this band apart is Mike Score's huge ego. Ali, Paul and Frank all seem like very likable and level-headed guys, then and now, but Mike clearly has an "I am the band" attitude, then and now.
Mark Twain said "It ain't braggin', if ya done it." In that way, Mike WAS the band. His idea, he put them together, named them, wrote the songs, led, etc... Could he have been a better leader, and they wouldn't have fallen apart? We'll never know, but I doubt it. The pressures they were under - doing that many gigs (157 in a row! wow), along with booze and drugs and lifestyle, and Paul such a young person being in the midst of all that - I'd wager it was not "if" but _when_ they flew apart, from someone needing to bow out. An eventuality. No doubt, the man has an ego :) - and yet, he has every right to it, if you ask me. Have you checked out his Zeebratta release from 2014? If not, here it is - listen, he *still* has it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4CJDeewSNIE.html
@@leaveonlywake I will check that out. I still listen to their music. Mike Score, aside from a huge ego, can't sing, either; regardless, the music they made together was good stuff.
@@leaveonlywake lm sure all the others guys contribute, especially Pauls talent guitar playing! Remember they started the "New Wave movement" and syn sound!💙
I have a new appreciation for a Flock of Seagulls, Paul Reynolds is the best, to be that young and have that much pressure dropped on you, I mean he revolutionized the sound of the 80s, literally when I think 80s his guitar echo especially comes to mind, musical genius
There are so many musically inclined people in the world who love to sing or play instruments, but are terrified of being in the public eye. They cope in many different ways, but that usually means drugs and/or alcohol. Many lives destroyed in the music industry, but I like to see shows like this where they come together and seem to fix a bit of themselves, heal some wounds and that's one of my favorite parts of this series.
Paul seemed like he had been through a lot mentally and physically, and understandably wasn't totally comfortable talking about it on camera even after all these years. Whatever happened to him is his business, and I applaud him for being strong and his band mates for being supportive of him while still giving him his space. And man, he can still play a guitar.
Partying and touring for a 150 gigs straight will fuck a person up bad. They body needs a break/rest. Some down time. Its really no different then being an athlete. Cheers 👍
Still, Paul was such a visionary and talented guitarist. I remember his birthday party when they were on tour and the band singing to him "Happy Birthday to Paul". Yeah, that's a hard lifestyle, but HIS SOUND MADE the band.
Awesome!! Not to bust YOUR bubble Ego Mike but without Paul and his unique style, sound and writing AFOS would have never been as big as it was(is). It's obvious the fans love Paul for what he went through at such a young age and accomplished. Remember the 4 of you made it happen. Just look at the magic that just happened after 20 years of being apart. Great job guys, and thank you 👍👍
Paul was only 17 when he joined the band (I'm 1 year older than him) so mix that with quick fame, success and lots money and the fairly predictable happened. He seems like a soft spoken and likeable guy and I'm glad he seems to have gotten through all those difficulties. I loved FOS right away when they came on the scene. Very underrated band. ❤
You can tell that Frank Maudsely is the reason they were smiling and he was the icebreaker... for the two brothers, and then into Paul... Paul's so shy and reserved and immediately seeing Frank has not changed warmed his heart and even made Mike a bit different.
The whole mental stress breakdown thing…. I get it! Jamming all them consecutive nights, partying afterwards, driving to the next show. Can’t be easy. No one can fault the guy
When Flock of Seagulls came to New York City I performed with them on roller skates with my group I remember it was at a club in midtown. They had just come out with "I Ran" and it was a great high energy experience. Wish them all well.
As a rock guitar player, I first scoffed at the guitarist being referred to as a “guitar whiz”.... but watching their performance, that guy really was ahead of his time. Not a virtuoso, but very good for his style of music. Mastering a delayed guitar sound is a lot harder than it looks... The Edge from U2 basically stole this cats style!
Ha! Yeah. In the 80’s I was busy listening to Metallica and Slayer. And learning those riffs on guitar. Although I was a metal head through and through, I kinda liked Flock. Never though much of the guitarist. But I’ve come to appreciate him a lot more over the years. Very cool riffing. And very much like U2’s the Edge.
Omg! paul Reynolds is an master 🎸 guital player!...they are all very talented! Gotta love these guys!!! I sure do! Such great memories love them to pieces!
He was my classmate in liverpool school. Believe me hes always been funny and zany. There was many in that school !! I bump into him now and again. Glad hes done well from Norris green.
Loved seeing them live in Seattle at the Paramount in their heydays. After all these years, I am still alway impressed with the brilliant guitar work , tone, and sounds of Paul Reynolds. So nice to see them reunite even if only for this show. A great band of the era.
My eyes got teary when they started singing I ran after so many years being apart. I thank god I lived to see this happen and enjoy their wonderful music in my teenage and adult years. Desde El Salvador les deseo lo mejor y gracias por su musica.
Paul Reynolds was such an amazing talent, I'll bet he can play any genre of Rock and Roll and produce a very authentic sound. Man was sort of underutilized and far far underrated.
I have always loved this band. Pauls guitar is eerie and beautiful at the same time. Just recently(in June)the original 4 members got back together again. They just recorded an album called "Ascension" which is them backed with an orchestra of the band members/fans fav songs. I truly think because of this 2003 VH1 Bands re-united Ascension would not have occurred! I have watched this VH1 special countless times & it never gets old. Love it!!
Thanks VH1 for putting them back together, even just for one night, great to see the reunion but also i hope it helped the band members to put the past behind them and reconnect, great show!.
Exactly! Was just thinking the same thing sat watching this, if for nothing else, not the music, the fans, the nostalgia, all that aside to get the 4 of them together after the way it all fractured and soared was an achievement itself, it was good to see the warmth amongst them (even if Mike seemed a shade distant compared to the others) . If it helped heal old wounds and reestablish contact between them as friends/family alone then this was so worthwhile, good on vh1 for facilitating it and making it happen! Music is constant it will always be there, bonds can break and ego gets in the way ....time can heal! There will always be a flock of seagulls
This brought a tear to my eye. The 80's were such a great, creative era in terms of music, and I have some great memories. I think that 'AFOS' encapsulated and represented that era better than any band (or most bands), so it was a joy to watch them come together for this. Thanks for the upload.
It brought a tear to my eye too !! I think these guys needed to do this ! I loved it and am so glad they were willing to get together, despite all the hurts of the past. It gave me a warm feeling to see them get back together, if only for one performance. They still have fans ! And I’m one of them !
being a ex band tour bus driver i know where they are coming from !! on tour gigs 24/7 its a nightmare for the bands . so respect . health is more vital than anything else and family as well . stay safe .
At the beginning of the year 2020 Paul Reynolds suffered a stroke and was admitted to the hospital, currently he is recovering and having daily physical therapy.
I'm an old man now, but damn these guys were great when I was 17 in 1982, "Space age love song" brings back so many good memories, it was awesome to see them come back together again for this VH1 special .... thanks guys!
Last night, I saw the Flock of Seagulls for the first time live in Downtown Los Angeles. I knew who they were and listened to their songs a long time ago. But last night was a wish fulfilled. I first saw this VH1 documentary when I was in College. But last night was a very emotional night for me. Thank you Flock of Seagulls.
I remember this series. It was one of the last run of programs by VH-1 that involved some intricate investigation and thorough research. Now all they produce TV shows about Social Media "influencers" who have zero musical talent.
For me,the most beloved song from their first album,is "standing on the doorway".The riff of Paul's,was so haunting,as it was supposed to be,considering the lyrics. One of the best bands of the 80's.Trip down the memory lane...
Wow, memories. To be honest, I was never a huge fan when I was younger, but looking back I remember how much I did actually enjoy the hits and still remember them fondly over 30 years later. God bless these guys and I wish them the best. Thanks for the memories.
I was in the audience for this! What wasn't mentioned (even to the band, apparently), was that most of the audience, including myself, were paid extras, hired to make up the crowd! I remember queueing at the end to get my booking form signed so I'd get paid, hehe. It was good fun though!
Ali seems like such a sweet guy, I hope he and Mike can become Brothers again. Sad that fame, fortune and greed can tear apart even the most strong family relationships.
I remember reading that he and Mike got into physical brawls behind the scenes. I always wondered if Ali was trying to knock some sense into his baby brother for being an asshole. Seems like a really decent guy.
AFOS were ahead of their time in my opinion. So different a lot of people couldn't really take them seriously at the time. But honestly the music was great. I Ran, Space Age Love Song, Modern Love Is Automatic, Photograph Of You, Transfer Affection all amazing tracks.
Paul Reynolds ❤️🥰❤️ amazing guitarist what a sweetheart ♥️ I hear him mention his iconic glasses. I had multiple pairs of glasses just like that --multiple pairs in case I lost one --I never took them off unless going to sleep --however many a time I fell asleep doing school work or studying for a test or just lying in bed listen to --A Flock of Seagulls of course !! 😊
I was inspired back in the day by Pauls guitar riffs, and it was the first time I'd discovered the e.bow. Their sound was never the same after he left.
I recently spoke with Mike Score (Aug. 2016) at a show about whether AFOS reunited following this VH1 special. He said, "No we didn't, and it'll never happen!" I told him, "That's too bad," and he said, "It's not too bad, that's just rock'n roll!" Mike was in good spirits, and a pleasure to talk to. I still think they should get back together. What a great '80's band! AFOS ROCKS!
I thought they played a few shows after this VH1 show per Wikipedia. I searched for those supposed shows but did. It find anything. Mike Score set it straight.
I just can’t stop watching this over and over again. This brings so much happiness to all that loved this unique and highly talented band. Thank you guys!
@@Mind-your-own-beeswax Hi Mick, I remember you all from your days in Liverpool, I worked in the cafe, think it was 1979, you invited me and my friend to listen to you all practice, do you remember?
@@Mind-your-own-beeswax Hi Mick, thanks for your reply, you've had a much more busier life than me and it was a long time ago, 43 years, how time flys, I can't remember the name of the cafe, it was upstairs and there was a restaurant below, it was not far from limestreet station. Hope you and your family are well, take care Mick. Xx
Well, Paul said he hadn't picked up an ELECTRIC guitar in 8 years. He was working as a "freelance musician", so I'm pretty sure he was playing acoustic guitar in that time. That's not to take anything away from Paul at all... he's a fantastic musician, and his nailing his part in that performance after all that time is still impressive.
agreed - imagine seeing him play live for the very first time in the 80s! If I could go back in a time machine....I mean the band were great and definitely captured the moment and encapsulated that great 80s vibe, but Paul's ability was incredible at such a tender age, it really stands out and the Flock were blessed to have him on board......shame what he went through, but that's the perils of fame. This was at times, a bit awkward to watch but the fun they had at the end was worth it. Totally smashed it
Getting in touch with Ali in this plastic company in the suburb of Raleigh is incredible, isn't it ? ...Let's imagine researching Ringo Star and discovering him filling a tank in a fuel station in Liverpool? lol !
So Amazing that this was Possible ! many bands after 20 years have lost members ! A short rehearsal, and the concert proves they all still have it, in history and Talent ! Thank You Guys so much for doing this one last time ! Awesome !
I actually saw these guys play in a bar on Guam back in 83 or 84 when I was in the Navy. I think they were on their way to Australia. I don't know how they got them to play for a few hundred people when they were playing in arenas , but it was great.
Saw these guys in 1981 at the Rock Garden in Covent Garden just after the release of "(It's Not Me) Talking". Saw them again in 82 when "Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)" was riding high in the charts. An absolutely brilliant band to see live. Paul is one of the most underrated guitarists ever, such an immense talent and the "sound" of A.F.O.S.
Paul Reynolds was ridiculously good. Among guitarists from the new romantic bands, he was by far the best. He is from that rich vein of atmospheric players, like Andy Summers and Johnny Marr.
These guys were the most unique of the 80's British Invasion. Their Stage Presence, Overall look and unique style and their Music was Great. I always said that they were ahead of their time! It's amazing how they still loved each other after all that time had passed. This guy from VH1 is amazing how he was able to put them back together again, putting aside the pain of the past!
pigknickers ~Paul Reynolds is an awesome guitarist for this genre... tasteful use of the delay pedal....they epitomized the 80's for me... let's face it, their all good players, Maudsley on bass,Ali Score is a really tight drummer,Mike Score is the voice and keyboard wizard...This band was very futuristic to me back in the 80's...those hair-dos were definitely 80's, and absolutely something that would be produced from two hair stylists...I definitely had a few of those double- breasted shirts they used to wear back then...they resembled silk or satin chef coats...and the cotton sleeveless ones were very similar... we were overstocked, on unique bands in the 80's,But British Synth Pop/ New Wave bands were everywhere..."A Flock of Seagulls" brought some fun to music listening...
I always loved their fluid, sexy naive dystopia, never saw them as a cheesy throwaway band. Like Modern English they could chill your blood and yet make you dance.Such a beautifully touching homage/rekindling of that spark that tignited so many folk, me in Cape Town in the army, late 80s,
