Came here to say what you did. No band spit in the eye of commercial success like FNM did in '92. They released an album that literally nobody who bought The Real Thing asked for, and for my money Angel Dust stands as the greatest realized vision of the alternative movement. I've come to think of it as the Sgt. Pepper's of our generation and like The Beatles, FNM continued to take musical left turns with every subsequent release.

Avenged Sevenfold... they slightly alter their sound with literally every album and improve greatly while still keeping their heavy metal roots, they've always experimented with their sound, and in 2016 they released their BEST album to date, The Stage, which is definitely progressive metal with traditional heavy metal at heart that still manages to keep a sense of mainstream accessibility, hence why they're still one of the biggest metal bands of this century... in 7 albums A7X went from metalcore, to heavy metal, to a mix of metal, hard rock, country, and some cinematic Tim Burton-esque song, all on their self-titled, to a classic metal sound most reminiscent of black album-era Metallica, to progressive metal... they may not have entirely changed genres and all but they are definitely extremely versatile and obviously talented as hell and I'm honestly anxious to hear what they put out next

I was into a lot of other metalcore bands when A7X City of Evil was rising in hype but I didn't really get into them until years after Rev died. They've stayed solid thru and thru

Nah, all my good friends were huge a7x fans in the 2001-2003 era. Once city of evil came out, they all dipped and hate that band now. I wasn’t even a big fan but I would agree. They are a butt rock metal band now. Waking the fallen better than the garbage they put out now but I was more of a trivium, killswitch and lamb of god guy for that era and genre
@UhOh_ItzJDX
@UhOh_ItzJDX 2 года назад
@@GeorgeZimmermen have you listened to The Stage?? or are you just basing that off of Hail To The King? or maybe you just don't like their music, that's fine, they're far from a butt rock band tho, if post-1993 Metallica is good, then Avenged is great... they don't have to make the heaviest shit out there, they're a mainstream metal band at the end of the day, but they're not just metal musicians, they're great songwriters, they're all talented at what they do, and i wouldn't call a band with no bad albums a butt rock/metal band

@@UhOh_ItzJDX to me and my group of metalhead friends, they aren’t takin seriously anymore. Sure, jammin some old a7x is still ok, but I guess what I’m getting at is a7x changed and for some of us, the change was for the worst. They are a radio metal band now and that’s fine, but there is a reason they have a bigger audience when they went softer or more basic in the songwriting. It’s metal for casuals now which is ok, but people who truly love metal music are gonna toss them to the side as less than. I know I do

A bunch of those bands were signed for gigs at a local shit bar where me and a bunch of my buddies played and hung out. I've never seen a bigger disparity in a crowd in my life. One side of the bar was a group of dudes, mostly overweight from drinking, sweaty from beating someone's ass in a mosh pit, drinking pbr and rotgut. The other side you had enough hairgel and makeup to make ulta beauty jealous, jeans so tight they had to stuff their junk up their asses, hands full of wine coolers, and enough desperation to scare away every chick in 1000 miles. When they left they were glad they were wearing makeup because they got their asses beat the fuck down in the pit. Good times.

Had to come back here just to comment - I think we need to tread lightly on the Metallica discussion. Obviously Finn - you're the GOAT and did a magnificent job with the video. We've all argued endlessly about Metallica's turn when they went to the Black Album, Load, and ReLoad...and I think collectively now - in 2020 - those albums are regarded and received well by metal and Metallica fans...granted although, hated at the initial time of their release. To this amazing music discussion and very loaded conversation...I'll say this: Finn, how was Metallica supposed to survive if they didn't evolve? The Black Album by far catapulted the band to rich millionaire megastars, and did more for them in the mainstream than Kill Em All, Justice for All, Lightning, or Puppets could have ever dreamed. They needed to follow-up in a way that didn't depart too much from the Black Album with Load and ReLoad. More importantly however - think about the timing. The 90's was full-on Grunge with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, STP, etc. and pop-punk with Green Day, Offspring, and Blink and eventually Nu Metal...where was the long-hair, black leather jacket, tight jeans, and dark boots look and sound of Thrash Metal supposed to go? It would have been very dated for Metallica to continue being Thrash. Look at Anthrax, Megadeth, and Slayer...they all stayed in their era and lane and non evolved to Metallica's level of megastardom and "Godfathers of Metal" status. Also...at that time, I remember Metallica co-headlining or headlining alongside popular acts dominating the airwaves like Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, and Slipknot. So in a way...Metallica had to ditch the outdated sound and look in order to survive. True, they turned their back on their original fanbase and Thrash sound...but nowadays, most look back at Black/Load/ReLoad with a positive outlook. If it weren't for those albums...if the Thrash sound just continued through...would Metallica have survived and been crowned the Gods of Metal and granted untouchable immunity? Everything has to evolve to survive...our favorite bands are no different. Metallica still sells out stadiums around the world within minutes...can other bands say the same? All these years later...
@ippotsk
@ippotsk 3 года назад
Although you could also say that by staying in their lane, the rest of the Big 4 of Thrash managed to rack up less "hate from their fans" over the past decades than Metallica have gotten in a single given year. Even if Anthrax, Megadeth and Slayer aren't really household names like Metallica these days, who's to say that it may not be what they wanted all along? Just a thought.

Metal and rock fans are the absolute worst It's either a Volbeat, Seether, or FFDP thing where the fans are like "yeah, we like it, but its literally the exact same thing as the last 3 albums" or it's a Metallica, Faith No More, Slipknot, Pearl Jam, or Korn thing where it's "wow this isn't like what they used to do, this sucks." I always like to think about it this way: if it came from another artist, would I like it? Because I would love the black album and ReLoad if it came from someone not named Metallica, so I just like those albums instead of bitching and moaning that it isn't Puppets again

I appreciate bands that change their sound, to me it crates a whole new window into the heart and soul of a band or group and that is what music is about! Connecting on different levels adds more solid connection emotionally and times change bands get older and can not necessarily play or sing as heavy as before so you get the mad/angry and the chill/peaceful or vise versa some bands do get better all in all it is really awesome to see unfold for most bands.

Eh when it comes to Metallica I feel like Load/Reload had some decent songs that seem to have gained a bit more respect since time has passed, and even St. Anger had some cool enough ideas that were at least listenable. Their S&M album doesn't seem to be talked about a lot, but I feel like it was pretty fantastic and an interesting take on some of their best songs.

Tallica has become a legacy classic rock act while also staying a classic metal band with a huge global audience. It is clearly mainly because of their 80s output but some of the songs that you talk about also are popular with people from the 90s and 2000s and the new metalheads just focus on their more recent neothrash albums and their classic 80s stuff. In the early 90s they became so huge that it guaranteed a huge global audience no matter what they would do. The other big 4 bands did not achieve that much success and so it seems to me they have decided to stay mostly within thrash while dabbling in other experiments not too far from that (Anthrax and Megadeth) while Slayer more or less just decided to stay with their 80s sound but with better updated production in a way not too different from what AcDc or the Stones did.

Part 2 pls. A couple of bands I would like to see covered: Parkway Drive: After 4 albums of metalcore, they went in a different direction, with lead vocalist Winston McCall stating that they've "outgrown metalcore". While most of their core fanbase can't stand their last two albums (I think they're decent but not as good as their early material), their new songs are WAY more popular (8 out of their top 10 on Spotify are from the past 2 albums). Avenged Sevenfold: Altho you've done a video on them already, would be interesting to hear abt how their fans reacted to all their changes (personally, I think Nightmare is their best album, with City of Evil being a close 2nd). Paramore: While I don't like anything they've done after Brand New Eyes, their newer songs seem to do rly well. My theory is that they gained more of a mainstream following with their self-titled album which more than makes up for the ppl they might have alienated.

Why every reviewer likes Code Orange - Underneath: The record has range. Band is drawing influences from Merzbow, Skinny puppy, Converge, All out war, and grunge? Those are like, snobby underground tastemakers favorite things. Code orange definitely brings their take on all of those influences together, and has made something wholly unique, but the sound is still an amalgamation of things that heavy/dark music reviewers hold in very high regard, that the general public might not necessarily be aware of.

The big one for me is In Flames. They have so far changed their style three times. From 1994 - 2000 they were a pioneering Melodic Death Metal band, then from 2001 - 2010 they played more mainstream alternative metal/metalcore with a mix of screams and clean singing, and finally from 2012 - present they've moved to a more rockier sound with even more clean singing & less harsh screams. There's barely any metal left to their sound outside of a few songs and they're music is a far cry from what it was when they original started playing. I still enjoy all their albums but their 1994 - 2000 output was head and shoulders above anything they've released since.

They clearly thought they were sick when they made Doom, but it was the aspect "real metal" fans hated the most and scene kids liked the most. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BI0wTmqsOMc.html

I second, or third, this. Not only do they change it up every release, but they are very explicit about it. I’ve heard their (awesome) guitarist Jade Puget once say in an interview that you have to keep moving forward even if people won’t like it- that doing something new is always better than a return to form. They walk the walk in that regard. As a longtime fan of theirs I respect this outlook, however like many of their fans, I can’t help but think “man, wouldn’t it be great to hear more of their hardcore/post-hardcore sound again?”

You did not mention my favorite band Celtic Frost! They were originally the earliest form of Black Metal as the band Hellhammer, similar to Venom with lyrics about Satan, but then changed their sound to be more early atmospheric or avant-garde black metal with occult references and adding more ethereal vocals and focusing on nature leading to them changing their name to Celtic Frost! Now Celt Frost for the most part had that early Thrash sound like Venom, but had ethereal vocals being a little bit more like Bathory, but on the late 80 s, ; my favorite band Celtic Frost released Cold Lake, which pretty much was a great glam metal album. Thomas Gabriel Fisher/ Warrior looked like a Viking in spandex for the music video to Theo single Cherry Orchards and got on Headbanger’s Ball! The fans hated the album , and Celtic Frost hated the album, but the critics and the record label loved the album. I personally love the album, but I love actual glam metal, but can’t stand glam pop rock. Thankfully, Martin Eric Ain. , who sadly already died , hated the album so much that the next album was a return to their early avant-garde black metal or early atmospheric black metal sound, and everyone loved them again except all of the new critics that loved them and the record label and Headbanger’s Ball until 2006 when they released Monotheist, which to me sounds like a precursor to what some of these newer mor atmospheric black metal bands are doing now. I remember watching them on Headbangers Bsll 2! I missed them for Headbangers Ball in 88, but I did watch them on VH1classic Metal Maniacs, and Dying God Coming internet o Human Flesh on Fuse’s Uranium and MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball.

Code Orange gets love because they always have. They got love when they were that DIY beatdown sounding band because it was cool to love them, but then as they got bigger and their albums had a budget, they started making music they wanted to make. Since it was cool to like them, no one's gonna bad mouth them. Besides, the music they make is cool as shit. They do what they do VERY well. An example of a band that changed their sound and audience is Hundredth. Wish you talked about this. They were THE hardcore/metalcore band. They drew huge crowds of sweaty meatheads at warped tour. Their energy was unstoppable. They were growing so quickly and EVERYONE had their merch. Every band was wearing their shorts. Then, with the departure of Blake, they changed to a shoegaze band. The change from a super aggressive hardcore band to a very down to earth shoegaze band was insane. No one really hated it though. They were still making good music, it just wasn't that fast paced mosh music everyone was used to. Now, all the cool kids that cuff their pants and wear shirts they found at goodwill listen to them, and the buff meatheads moved on without a word, because Knocked Loose is the new up-and-coming band.

Absolutely hate the new stuff. They’ve lost so much of what made them great. Tight drumming, groovy bass lines and intersecting guitar lines. The new stuff just seem to sound like the exact opposite of what they started out as.
@JoseNelisParham
@JoseNelisParham 4 года назад
@@Haraamcore13 Change is not bad, maybe just more of their first two albums would have been great, but they didn't go down that route. Some bands change their sound and if it changes to something good than all the better for it. They got slower but they also grew up, from songs about life as a teenager in Sheffield to songs about women to SPACE. You don't have to like it ofcourse but IMO I think their latest album is a masterpiece.

I'd say with Code Orange, as a fan, they have evolved as musicians. Once they changed to just Code Orange the industrial/edm chopping of their music really set them off. I think they were very influential and not very many bands sound like them, and due to the hip hop influence of their music they stand out from the hardcore scene more than most bands. Plus they're great at promoting the band. They had the deal with WWE, they done the first live stream concert to an empty venue. In my eyes they are pioneers, and will only continue to get bigger at this point.

Like Finn said in his video, I think his point of "the fans were just not ready for it" point with SS is comparable with 30STM and I agree with you. I actually really like some of their newer songs, particularly off of their This Is War album when they departed the sound. But America was kind of a slap to the face for me when I heard about it because it just brought these deep associations when Linkin Park tried to release One More Light. It was just too much change and a departure from their original sound, combined with the musical criticisms I have for it as well, that made me have a bad taste in my mouth.

hoping you mentioned Radiohead, they changed their style practically every album after the Bends. From grunge (Pablo Honey) to alt/britpop (the Bends), OK Computer (Alternative, electronic rock), Kid A (experimental, electronic), Amnesiac (also experimental, but Jazzy), Hail to the Thief (political rock, art rock), In Rainbows (The free album??), the King of Limbs (my least fav album -- but another experimental/electronic), and a Moon Shaped Pool, which is an amalgamation of a bunch of shit. And they still release some britpop/alt rock songs (Man of War, Lift)

I feel like for a band to succeed in changing their sound it has to actually be something they want to do because they actually want to change their sound and not because they feel like it will reach a wider audience but I don’t have much knowledge on the music industry so I might be 100% wrong but it’s just how I believe it works

One band that seemed to survive a major transition thing well is Thrice. They had a major shift with the fourth record (Vhiessu) that had a huge back lash, but over time seems to now be regarded as their best work. Its weird for me, because I used to book local hardcore bands in 2005 and most of them were in love with the 2nd album illusion of safety (metal meets which skate punk) and hated that 4th album. They seemed to also have benefited from taking a 5 year break, where a lot of their older fans now accepting the post-vhiessu thrice sound.

Code Orange today has way more in common with 90s Alternative and Industrial metal than with Orgy who were basically new wave pop meets metal (which I enjoyed growing up) I love Code Orange's most recent two albums, they really dont sound like anything or anyone else out there. When everyone else is going for clean digital they're going full grungy analog a la Rob Zombie, early NIN and Ministry. They are this weird mix of industrial, alternative, hardcore and art metal. Writing them off as a WWE band I feel like is a slap in the face to their actual work.

As a huge Industrial music fan (both industrial metal and the non metal side of industrial music) the Orgy's album Punk Statik Paranoia is 100 percent an industrial metal album and also so very underrated.
