Thanks soooo much for this post. I had caught up with American Bandstand in 64. I was too young to dance the earlier stuff with boys. As a teen, I moved all over the country, dancing and dancing. The girls dance in this video is EXACTLY how all girls were dancing....from Florida to California, from Pennsylvania to Colorado. This is the only video that shows just how I did it back then.
Living in Philadelphia, the Dovells were from Philky. South Street still exists as kind of a hip street just below downtown Philadelphia. This was one of the last weekly Bandstand shows taped at the old Channel 6 studio in West Philadelphia.
Maybe not flat, but a different dance style had come by then. Kids are not holding hands as much. This is the beginning of standing opposite and dancing rather singly. I remember, as I was there doing this dance. I lived in L.A. from 64 to 66 and danced on the Lloyd Thaxton show. I like this video that shows the change.
At the intro, Dick says.." as we swing into a brand new year 1964 "..So this had to be just before the move to LA...I am sure most of the Philly kids were devastated to see Dick fold up the tent and go to the West Coast. I stopped watching [ for the most part] ,after the LA move. db
