BANFF National Park Part 1: Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, & Sulphur Mountain
Last year my friends and I took a 5 day trip to BANFF National Park in Alberta, Canada. BANFF is full of some amazing scenery. We filmed it on our iPhones and some Canon DSLRs. In part one, we explore Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, and Sulphur Mountain. This was our vacation! Hope you enjoy.

The first time I had even heard of BANFF was when a friend posted a video of them paddling out on Lake Louise. I saw the crazy turquoise water and said where is that?? Then I started seeing pictures on Instagram of the mountain scenery, more lakes, the picturesque town center, and knew I wanted to go.
BANFF National Park is located in Alberta Canada right in the Canadian Rockies. It takes about an hour and half to drive in from Calgary.
Things to do in BANFF:
First day, we spent a few hours in Calgary. If you’ve never been, and aren’t in a rush, it’s a fun city to check out. Good restaurants and easy to walk around.
Depending on when you get in to the park, I’d recommend checking out the town first. The town of BANFF is much bigger than I expected. It does feel like a tourist town, but it’s still fun. The bars and restaurants are good and plenty of places to shop for souvenirs if that’s your thing. They’ve got a few chain restaurants as well as the mountainy-BANFF themed places.
Where to stay in Banff:
We also booked our hotel in the town as well. It’s more central and it wasn’t too expensive either. We only had to pay $5 to upgrade our room to “Mountain View”. Hotel prices definitely vary in this town. You can stay in some really nice places in the mountains or on the main strip if you want to spend a lot. If you’re on a tight budget, you can find a few “cheaper” options in town or look into Canmore. It’s not that much farther away and people say it has cheaper options.
So here are the main places we spent our time the first couple of days in BANFF National Park:
What to see in Banff
Lake Louise -
Lake Louise is one of the most iconic spots in this park. Winter or summer, it’s a popular place to visit. The Fairmont Chateau sits on the lake’s edge, and then the rest is surrounded by mountains. We signed up for a package deal that let us book a sunrise cruise on the lake at 5:30a. They limit the number of guests on the lake so it felt like we had it to ourselves. It was great. Quiet, clean, not too cold, and extremely turquoise. The water is amazing. I highly recommend it. The other lake you can take a canoe out on is:
Moraine Lake -
Moraine Lake might be even more picturesque and as I said in the video, even more turquoise. We saw people out on canoes on this lake too. But we just enjoyed the view from the rocks. And the view from the rocks is incredible. Highly, highly recommend. It’s a small hike, and not too difficult. Mostly just stairs if I remember correctly. If you can only choose one lake to see, I think I’d pick Moraine.
What makes these lakes so blue/green? Apparently, the lakes that are glacier-fed constantly deposit “rock flour” which reflects light and gives it the color.
Sulphur Mountain-
Later in the day we drove back to our hotel and then took a bus to Sulphur Mountain. Sulphur mountain has an old lookout tower at the top. And if you like gondolas, it’s a great way to see the park. Seeing BANFF from the top of the mountain gives you a sense of how massive it is. And it’s just beautiful. Plenty of great look out spots. Just like the other two places, I would also recommend Sulphur Mountain.
I hope you liked watching the video. It was fun to make. Part 2 will be coming soon.

Its videos like this that I am proud to be Albertan and get to drive to Banff and Jasper in a day if I want to. My wife and I go on day trips once every 2 or 3 months. I wish I could see it for the first time again and have it all be a new view.

This was such an amazing video - you really captured the magic of Banff. I travelled there in June 2019, and I have defined it as "my happy place." A year later, I still look up videos on youtube to remember how amazing it was, and this video gave me all the feels!
