both sound very close to each other, but the one thing I love about the zoom is that majority of the customization is done on-screen. With the Boss, you have one tiny display with other non-illuminating switches around it, so if you're on stage and need some last minute tweaking, the Boss that might be a little difficult.

Really good video and presentation. Great that you played similar riffs between effects so we could tell the difference in sound. Nice the way that the video was zoomed into the effects units and to your playing. Nice titling in between unit effect groups. Now if I could only tell which one sounded better to me - LoL :-D

Definitely 2 different products, in how they sound i mean, for the same gear models. I was clicking between the same sound comparisons to get a better distinction. The Zoom sounds warmer, more natural it feels like, less processed. The Boss on the other hand, sounds more focused and the clean amp models were definitely brighter and perhaps "cleaner" sounding. Both good products, I guess it comes down to sound preference as well as how easy they may be to browse through, especially how quick they might be for those who may be using these to perform with... Thanks for demoing!

I was indecisive between both these units, so I bought both! I am in love with the Boss MDP effects Viz. Tera Echo and Overtone (overtone is polyphonic). The effects that are present in the Zoom reminds me of the old Korg AX-1G i have which is 22 years old btw. Zoom's amp SIMs are marvelous.

WOW!! Well, then you're the guy to ask. I guess my question is for either unit, though I'm leaning towards the Boss. I have a bunch of pedals right now, and I'm tired of them. What I need from this unit is the ability to use it as stomp boxes, or have easy effect changing possibilities. For example, if my song starts out with OD/Chorus/Delay, then midway I need only Distortion/wah, and for the ending I want Distortion/Reverb, then I need to go back to the first setting of OD/Chorus/Delay. Do I need to set up a separate patch for each of these sounds: patch number 23, 24, 25, 26? If so, do I need to click backwards from 26 to 23 to get to that original patch/sound? OR, if I understand it correctly, could buy the additional footswitch and have 5 separate buttons like boxes if I want to tap dance? I am looking to simplify my rig, not make it more difficult. I used a Mustang III V2 for the last 3 years with the footswitches, and it was a bit tricky. Thanks for any light that you can shed on this.

Hi I've been searching for a new pedal and ran across your channel. After looking at a few videos from some other people I almost shut my phone off. I just wanna say you did a great job demonstrating these 2 petals. Most of the other demonstrations seemed like they were trying to show how much noise they could freaky make. Anyways I am glad I landed here you did an exceptional job demonstrating these two petals and really showing what a guitar can actually sound like. Again, great job!! Hope you know Jesus.. I know this is old but I'm looking for a bedroom board and able to take it to my beach house vacation on batteries. Just plug guitar and headphones, AUX in to play to tunes. I went through all of these videos for the one that would suit my needs. These two were in my top-5. I chose the Boss because it's lightweight and know their pedals are quite stout. Also, you can download patches from Tone Central through the USB cable. None of these are perfect and I'll only use a few made patches for the music I play (Foo, Whitesnake, mostly 80's). You did a great job showing off the potential of these two units.

Truth is, you can't go wrong with either one of these. It's all about learning how to use your tools. I do like the knobs on the Zoom, but I'm old. Been turning knobs my whole life. When I got the software pulled up on the big screen I can get the sounds from both units. Some people got different learning curves and gravitate the direction that's comfortable. Get the one that fits your workflow the best.

First of all - good playing. Nice comparison! Thanks! Both FXes are good to play, some sounds are better on zoom some on Boss. Mostly I prefer zoom but not always. They both are very handy and inspirational tools but what can we gain if we can't play. Playing technique and good ear is the key to sound well. have a great day! stay in tune!

Honestly, I was just looking for a basic pedal to bring with me for open mike nights, as it was getting to be too difficult to lug my amp and be able to set up quick. I’m getting spoiled with this level of plug and play. Take a look at my videos when you have the chance. Thanks again.
@thomasdemartino6109
@thomasdemartino6109 5 лет назад
Just curious, did you change the settings on the Boss pedal to accommodate how you were plugging it in? You can alter it to the Return of the back of the amp, or direct into a stack, combo, or even PA/headphones. I think that might help convey the difference in the pedal’s warmth. Click the edit button on the top panel to pull up this list of options.

@@thomasdemartino6109 Hi Tom, is the Boss easy to change parameters in stomp box mode on d fly (during gig). I like d individual buttons for each pedals on the zoom. But I read its menu needs long learning curve.
@thomasdemartino6109
@thomasdemartino6109 4 года назад
Attila Lemy -YmeL Yes, the parameters are easily changeable while you were playing. My opinion is that you need to take time to review the manual to know how to do this quickly. Most of the settings are very intuitive on the boss pedal, if you took the time to read where to find the buttons and adjustments. I have found that if you take the time to preset these parameters at home, before playing out live, you can pre-determined volume levels for leads, multi-effects to be added, as well as better rhythm volume tracks when you want to play behind the scenes. I had a gig two weeks ago where I put my boss pedal into a Mackie 150 watt monitor, The microphone stand variety. It provided me with plenty of volume and tone as well as the capability of running a direct XLR cable wire to the PA system. That was all I needed for this particular live gig.

Hi. Is this good for recording an album ? Is the sound pure and deep enough for a high quality result, recorded ? Thx.
@Pulse2AM
@Pulse2AM 5 лет назад
I bought a GT-1, and here is my observation. There is a compressed mid-range that makes it sound less like a real amp. That said if you dig in deep and try different OD's on different amp models you can get convincing tones. Most of the presets have too much gain and that's when it starts to sound not realistic. The editor is a life saver because menu diving is a pain. You need to start with a clean patch, everything off and build it up slowly, little adjustments to the gain and EQ make a huge difference. The strengths are in the clean tones and leads, power chords for straight up rock are a bit of a disappointment but you can get some usable ones. Here's a tip for recording. Turn off the speaker cab and use IR speakers, you'll have a better way to sculpt your tone!
@Pulse2AM
@Pulse2AM 3 года назад
@Vladimir No, I have to use a IR cabinet in my DAW and run that on a track then have the GT-1 plugged into that track with the GT-1's cabinet turned off.

I have a boss gt1 and can’t really speak for the zoom but if you are going to be playing live I would definitely recommend the boss gt1 it’s very simple to use and easily controlled without using your hands and sounds very good. I used it with a clean tone on my extremely cheap amp(ibanez 25r 42watt combo) before I got a better amp, and it made it sound great! Also great for running strait into a PA

I like the Zoom pedal better because it sounds mostly more direct and not so much processed than the Boss. I expect that in a band context the Zoom will do better where when you play alone at home the Boss might produce a more HiFi like result. And btw. this is a great comparison - thank you guys for all the effort to produce such high quality videos.

I have an older Zoom G3 and the Boss GT1. The Zoom sounds somehow more vintage while the Boss more Hifi. The Boss can do very clean sounds and the effects are superior to the Zoom while I like the MESA from the Zoom more. The Boss has too much treble you cannot remove. The Soldano on the Boss is my favourite.

I have zoom G3X, in my experience for 3 years using it is, zoom sound is very sharp and so much presence and if we dont careful it might hurt the audience ears. In some of the amp sim, you can't get rid the sharp sound even you turn the treble off. And the middle of the equalizer are not to defined, so i have to use extra equlizer to pump it up. So for beginner i think maybe zoom are quite hard to deal with, i have seen a few guitarist that use it live on stage, they all have the same problem, the sounds are to thin and lacks of the fullness that can cut the other instrument frequencies. Well its just my experience and opinion, i sell it a few days ago and maybe i will buy gt 1 or rp 360xp for my effect pedal. Pardon for the bad english. Cheers.

Very good point and I agree...presence all over the place, although for recording it's just wonderful (G3/X). Enormously tweakable pedal; I keep finding deeper ideas on it, so won't part ways with it. Just curious as to exact differences with the G3Xn.

I think some patches sounded better on the Zoom while others sounded better on the Boss. It's rare in this kind of comparison where one completely wipes the floor with the other (in my opinion), even in examples where one unit is newer/more expensive. For some reason the flanger/phaser effects sounded like they were at different points in the signal chain between the Boss and the Zoom (not saying that's the case, but that's how it sounded to me). I generally preferred the way those particular effects sounded on the Boss. I also preferred the octave fuzz on the Boss. If I were to generalise (because it wasn't in every example) I'd say Zoom has the better amp models and Boss has better effects. I'd personally like to see Boss, Digitech, Vox and Fender (when I was shopping for a multi-effects unit a few years ago it was Zoom, Boss, Vox, Digitech, Fender and Line 6 competing) update their modeling. COSM and the modeling used by Digitech and Vox are ancient in terms of digital processing and it seems like Fender have discontinued the Mustang Floor. While Zoom have updated their amp modeling, I was surprised they didn't incorporate the ability to load IRs. First company to come out with an affordable multi-effects unit that has a decent amount of reasonably good quality amp models and effects as well as the ability to load IRs would likely dominate that part of the market. My first multi-effects pedal was the Zoom 707ii which I bought on impulse after trying it in the shop (with no comparison to anything else). My second was the G2.1u which I got for next to nothing from a friend. My third pedal I actually researched. I ended up going with the Zoom G5 (even though at that stage I was beginning to want to try a brand other than Zoom) on the basis that it fulfilled my needs in terms of budget and features (also, of the units in my budget, it had the least amount of complaints about bad sounding amp models from users at the time). I bought the Atomic Amplifire 12 a little while back. Admittedly I've not used it all that much due to the lack of built in looper (which is incredibly important to me for practise). Also, despite sounding great, its amp and effects selection is relatively limited. I was under the impression that it would receive updates that introduce new amps and effects (like a lot of other multi-effect pedals), but in the time I've had it I think it has received one update that changed functionality/fixed bugs but didn't contain any new amps/effects. For the sake of convenience I'm still primarily using my G5. Kind of torn at the moment. Part of me wants to upgrade and go with something like the Helix, AX8 or Headrush. The other part of me wants to go with a more modular approach and get some decent drive pedals, an analogue or valve preamp, dedicated delay, reverb, modulation and a decent cab simulator for silent practice/home recording. I can then use the drive and effects pedals through my amp (and/or possible future amp/s) when I can be bothered to use my friends practise shed (can't really use my amp at home, so for now it's headphones for me).

How did you end up?
@napalmhardcore
@napalmhardcore 2 года назад
@@davidpopelka4073 I bought a Marshall SV20H, the matching 1x12 cab and a Boss Tube Amp Expander with the aim to buy individual effects, but admittedly, I've not really used that setup much because it's cumbersome to setup. I'm still with the Zoom G5 because it's convenient but it's developing problems with the buttons (press a button and it activates the next button over instead a lot of the time) and the LCD screens are becoming illegible. I wanted to go with one of the Fractal floor units but was hesitant to join a long wait list and they're really expensive. Most likely candidates at the moment are the HX Stomp XL/Helix LT or the Headrush MX5 (primarily because of its looper functions) but I'm not really playing much at the moment. I think I'm allergic to the nickel dust that comes from the frets due to bending. At the time I was willing to put up with it, but I got fed up of constantly having itchy blisters on my fingers and knuckles. Maybe I'll try getting nickel-free frets installed in future, but I don't really have cash to burn at the moment so for the time being everything's on hold in terms of guitar gear.

Let me add a few notes. The Zoom features a longer looper than the Boss (80 vs 32 secs) but Boss loops will survive patch changes so you can lay down a clean rhythm line, change to a distortion patch for a lead and the looped clean line will keep going. The Zoom USB is only for downloading firmware and patches. Zoom doesn't supply a patch editor either, just a patch arranger. Boss USB does firmware, audio and supports Boss' patch editor. Finally, the Boss will take an add-on assignable footswitch (3 switches) or expression pedal. I've been researching these two pedals and am leaning towards the Boss since it seems like it would be better for a live gig. I could be wrong. But then the Digitech RP360 XP has come down $30 in price so hmmmm.

Nice comment, Tom! Exactly what I noticed about ZOOM G3XN : great looper, but great restriction! In fact, you may change the sounds by using the looper in the stompmode; but never changing the patch. Another issue, is that on BOSS GT-1, as I understood, the looper is a 'function', not a 'pedal'. On ZOOM, by using the looper and, for example, the drums; that means two less available effects. Also, on ZOOM, the Preamp simulation with Cabinet occupy 3 units. I think the Preamp simulation with cabinet represents only 1 effect on BOSS. Finally, I believe that ZOOM has a bigger and better expression pedal. I still can not decide which one to buy.....

FWIW, I ended up buying the Digitech RP360 XP. The expression pedal on it is much more robust than the Boss. It feels like a real pedal and not some toy. The case is all metal and the footswitches are old school real mechanical jobs that feel like you've got stompboxes under you. It may be a few years old on the tech but sound-wise, I couldn't hear any difference between them. If you listen to this guy's review, you'll have a hard time picking ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FPVDIl1E1mA.html. The 360 has stompbox mode which is helped by the outboard FX footswitch which can be assigned to the looper or patch changer or both. Patch changes survive the looper and it has USB recording & patch editing. The Nexus software seems pretty cool. Time will tell whether I made the right decision. The preset patches on the RP360 would make a shredder happy but I'm going to have to work to get some good country & blues tones out of it. I know they are there though. :) I got both the pedal and the external FS for $185 total from Musician's Friend. They had a sale on the RP360 XP for $165, the footswitch was $37 AND they had a 20% off coupon and free shipping. I couldn't resist. Anyone want to buy my old RP90? It's still going strong!

Actually this version turned to shit, compared to the predecessor. Functionality-wise, it got severily crippled at the same time as it got an improvement or 2 - but i would never buy one, as is - got a G5. Great sounding though. The Boss sounded fuller and bigger. Anyone other than me, waiting for them to erase and rewind, and turn up a worthy version of the previously G3-5 (7?) models?

I suggest a PRS MT15 or Peavey 6505MH lunch box head or even a Blackstar HT5 or 20 head or combo for those on a budget w a wah and tubescreamer into the input and modulation effects of your choice through the effects loop and save up for an eventide if you crave harmony leads in your power trio Morello did the whammy and anyone else using it is Toms mini me. Nothing beats analog tube tones w real tube swell in your hands.

I have the gt 1 and the g1x4. I believe the G1X4 uses the same sound engine as the G3Xn however the main thing that makes the GT 1 sound better than the G1X4 is the fact that you aren't limited to 5 blocks in the chain including the amp, cab, and noise reduction. I can barely make a functioning patch on the G1X4. In fact I can barely work the expression pedal into a patch. Also the interface is a royal pain in the ass. The best sounding pedal I own so far is the Mooer ge150 though but it has its limitations like not being able to move fx in the chain and no fx loop in. Also the interface is way to simple. I have to dig into the software to turn fx on and off.

i recommend nux mfx10. wah pedal doesnt need to occupy any buttons just hard press the expression pedal and light goes on. but dont forget to activate efx as wah pedal.

My middle display has become fuzzy on my g3x, i'm pissed! And i did the lastest update about a year ago and the unit sounds like $hit!! Time to throw it into the ocean. There's a boss gt1 at my local pawnshop maybe i'll give a try.

Woow that sound @17:40 with the vibrato/rotary efect is really DopE bRo # Finally i found a review where the G3Xn has a decent sound coz all the other reviews on YT r just so bad i was starting to think that Zoom were downgrading their quality like hell ...N since i have been a user of their product since 2009 with the G9 2.tt which is unbeatable IMO thanks to the killa preamp section (which is by itself worth the price) which features transistor n dual tube circuitry which is a BIG + // A very good job m@n BTW i love your ibanez guitar i have a S5470 with full mahogamy body ...just insane !!!

Sorry for silly question.. Is that any reason you add ehx 44 magnum power amp to zoom g3xn? does it sounds better?
@MusicBlissMalaysiaTV
@MusicBlissMalaysiaTV 6 лет назад
The 44 Magnum is a power amp; I'm using it to power up the Orange Cabinet. A multi effects unit cannot power up a cabinet.
