Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge or Jamuna Bridge is a road and rail bridge located on the Jamuna River in Bangladesh.
With a length of 4.8 km, it is the second longest bridge in Bangladesh and South Asia.
Its construction was completed in 1997. It connects Bhunapur on the east bank of the river Jamuna and Sirajganj on the west bank.
It is the 11th longest bridge in the world and the 6th longest in South Asia.
The Jamuna is the largest of the three major rivers in Bangladesh and the fifth largest in the world in terms of volume of flowing water.
The bridge established a strategic link between the eastern and western parts of Bangladesh. It brings many benefits to the people of the region, especially the speed of inland goods and passenger transport.
This bridge was later renamed as Bangabandhu Bridge. The first initiative to build the Jamuna Bridge was taken in 1949.
Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani was the first to take this initiative. But then it was not possible to implement.
Work began on October 15, 1994, and was opened to traffic on June 23, 1997.
