3 Months ago I visited the Central Forest Park in Bangkok. Today I wanted to give you all an update about the construction. The construction really is going pretty fast.
The land was donated to the city to make a big park. The total size of the park will be 259 Rai (414,000 sqm or 445,6258 sq ft). It will be the first Forest Park in the City.
After the update about the biggest mall under construction in Bangkok I thought it would be nice to give a park update. Michael Rifa helped me out with the drone shot.

Impressive the decision to play a part in social responsibility for the community by donating the land to the city for this park. The more green lungs available is always a welcome sight.

I imagine that in the near future the apartments adjacent to the park will all become prime apartments just like the ones in NYC's central park.

A couple of posters asked who owns the land and believe it is part of the King’s family holdings and was donated to the city of Bangkok, much like Benjakkti Park that was donated to the city as it was previously owned by the Queen of Thailand. This area was called the Tobacco Monopoly as there were Tobacco storage facilities here. It was also used a place for the storage of their city buses.

According to the Tabacco Authority of Thailand (the successor entity to the Tabacco Monopoly of late), the tabacco plant used to be owned by a private company. In 1939, our rather socialist-leaning government at that time "Purchased" that plant from the said private company. So, yeah, it used to be a private land, and then turned state-owned, now they gave it up for public use.

Cool video - what is the history of the old site - it was an actual ciggerate plant / tobacco storage ??? It's a huge plot of land inside a big city - was it donated ? Or had the government been making ciggerates to slowly kill it's own people whilst making obscene amounts of money simultaneously 🤔

Back in the old days -and by that I mean around the second world war-, the area that is Bangkok's CBD right now used to be, for the lack of a better word, a rural backwater. That is why the royal government of the old days decided to put many facilities for government own monopolies around that area; we got an old Tabacco Plant, Train Depot, Old National Broadcasting Company, old Tariff Office, etc. scattered around the city, some of which is right at the heart of the CBD itself. Now, with the rapid urbanization in the 80's these places are swallowed up by the city and most of them have moved to a new place, leaving the old facilities to rot and not being put to good use. It's just been a few years ago did I see many of those plots of lands given back to the state or rent for private business for development; we have this tabacco plant turned into a park, the tariff office preserved and will be converted into a hotel, train depot likely turned into a business complex, etc. As for the state making ciggs: yes, it does make ciggs. As I said, the tabacco industries has been around since the day smoking used to be a common sight -even considered classy-, our government at that time, in their infinite wisdom and being a bunch of socialists as they were, thought it was a good idea for the state to run the tabacco business, so they "purchased" the tabacco plant from a private company and begun production and extending its supply chain by yet again purchased more plants and plantations. With the current competition in the market and the change in smoking trend that see declined number of smokers, I'd say the Tabacco Monopoly isn't much profiting anymore, but we still have to put taxpayer money to subsidize it (lest it have to layoff its employee, which would be bad for them), even with it now being turned into state enterprise. I can only hope that conversion into state enterprise is merely the first step, or a pretext for conversion into a private company, so we don't have to waste taxpayer money on them anymore.

@@mrmartin2079 as I said, the history of the Tobacco Monopoly can be traced back to when smoking was cool (I mean, the only country that actively campaigned against smoking at that time was Nazi Germany, so...) and when the anti-smoking trend started to roll around here in the '80s, the Tobacco Monopoly was just too big to be put down without consequences. Nobody have half the balls to even touch it until recently when it was converted into state enterprise (which I very much hope it will serve as a stepping stone for future privatization, so the state can be done with it)
