There is a Michelin Guide award but it's not expensive. It is an ancient Pad Thai with crispy pork instead of shrimp. And all the cooks and shopkeepers are hearing impaired. You guys have missed the best view of Banjakitti Forest Park. There is a long walkway over the wetland in the forest area and connected to the Green Mile which end at the Lumpinee Park.

The big beans you saw at the market was pakria or stink beans. It's Thai name is staw (สะตอ). It is the main ingredient of a popular southern Thai dish namely "staw pad goong" (สะตอผัดกุ้ง) or wok-fried stink beans with prawns". Cheers.!

Tom-Yum means they already seasoned all the seasonings for you and add the peanut powder my friends and it's always not too spicy just for everyone, so most times when you ordered the Tom-yum it will be always different up to that restaurants recipe. So some places when they famous about their Tom-yum that means they seasoned already yummy and Unique so a lot of people do not have to seasonings more if you want to try their original taste. So Tom-yum noodle means noodle that already soft seasoned by the chef with peanut powder. And that's why our Thai famous dish called Tom-Yum-Kung because it's already seasoned for you by the chef and with Kung(shrimp).

The Memorial Bridge, Flower Market, oldest govt high school. The bridge was the first bridge across Chao Phraya River built about 100 years ago during King Rama VII. It was a steel bridge whose middle spans could be raised to allow Navy ship to sail towards the Navy headquarters at King Taksin's Palace near Wat Arun. Later the Navy built a big pier at the mouth of Chao Phraya River and there was no need for the navy ship to come to the headquarter anymore, thus this bridge's middle spans were no longer raised for the last 40 years. I should know because I studied at Suan Kularb school at the foot of the bridge from 1965-69 and saw the bridge raised a few times. The school is the oldest, boys only government school in Thailand built during King Rama V reign. Its 2-storey yellow building was/is the longest 2-storey building in Thailand. Since then a parallel bridge with 6 lanes was built a few decades ago. Then a few years ago the skywalk garden was built in the middle of this new bridge at the former unfinished Lavalin railway track. It is the great place to relax, watching sun set while drinking a Thai beer. Meanwhile, you can also visit the Flower Market, just 100 meter from Suan Kularb School. Around 9 pm till early in the morning, all types of flowers were trucked in, sorted and arranged to be sold either retail or wholesale. The Flower Market never dies, the business is run 24 hours/7 days per week.

@4:29 the beans you were looking at are called " Sa-Tor ". Mostly from the South of Thailand, these are for making food (such as "stir -fry Sa-Tor with Shrims") and is Mark Wiens favorite.

I think you were on public holidays thats why market was a bit empty when you were there. Now we are during King Coronation weekend with a bridge of Labor day off from Monday so many people didnt go to work and went out of Bangkok now.

BTS,MRT: Thailand is a developing country that dared to implement an electric metro system decades ago, not by government initially but by a private enterprise under build-operate-transfer concession basis. When a housing developer Tanayong group proposed to Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BKK city government) to build an electric skytrain linking the major nothern/eastern provincial bus terminal (Mor Chit) into the city center (CBD) itself about 30 years ago, local Thais and expatriates were skeptical because previously HK Hopewell and Canadian Lavalin had proposed such project in Bangkok to the national government but failed hopelessly to complete the project. In the case of Lavalin, only about 1% was completed while Hopewell did a little better upto 5% before both concessionaires abandoned the project due to financial difficulties. However, elected Bangkok governor at the time Gen Chamlong Srimuang did not listen to experts' advices and granted Tanayong concession to carry out the project. Tanayong managed to borrow enough funds from local and overseas banks to build the civil structure running above the main roads, thus did not have to pay any land expropriation fee. When the civil structure was completed, Tanayong bought train and signal system from German Siemens as well as contracting Siemens to help run the system for 10 years. The first year official opening was about 23 years ago in 1999. Even then, some Thai and expatriates still voiced doubts whether the skytrain could earn enough revenue to cover the running costs as well as earning enough profits to pay off principals and interests as the first year's ridership was not great barely covering the operating costs. However, within 10 years the skytrain (Bangkok Transit System or BTS) turned profitable and after 23 years, the BTS is earning huge profit and has long paid off all debts. When the national government saw BTS success, it planned its own MRT (Metro Rapid Transit) systems, covering more lines. However, since some lines are run underground and some above ground, no private companies dared to do the same as Tanayong (now renamed BTS Group) as the civil construction is very expensive. So the national government established MRT state enterprise to design the lines and tender civil constructions using government budget. Once civil construction is completed, MRT tenders bids for private operators to secure the train system as well as running them under concessions. Bangkok is now covered by BTS/MRT/SRT (State Railway of Thailand which runs the Red Line to the suburbs and Airport Link from Suvarnabhumi airport to City center) systems more than 250 kilometers altogether. Lumpini Park is the first public park in Thailand built over 100 years ago. King Rama VI donated land at the outskirt of Bangkok to construct the park. The King used to be educated in a boarding school in England as a prince for several years and thus Lumpini Park was an attempt to emulate Hyde Park in England. Lumpini Park is the favorite park for people to exercise in the morning and evening. The park is world famous for its many monitor lizards, some are as long as 2-3 meters. Monitor lizard lives in the park's pond for decades. It has no predator so the park is the heaven for them. Nearby is Benjakitti Park which is connected to Lumpini Park via Green Skywalk. Benjakitti Park and its new extension (Forest Park) land used to house factories of Thailand Tobacco Monopoly. The factories were relocated to a remote province decades ago. Both Lumpini and Benjakitti parks are favorite for Thais and expats to relax, walking, biking or simply walking in the morning and evening. Biking is allowed in Lumpini park from 10.00-16.00. Other times are allocated to walkers and runners. Biking is allowed in all hours at Forest Park due to its dedicated bike lanes. The sculpture in Benjakitti Park is Prathumchart or literally Lotus Species. Lotus is the symbol of Buddhism and Thais bring lotus to the temple as merit offering.
