At 11:15 I thought they're tourist in Thai costume. It's very popular for Asian tourists to rent that from Maharaj pier and traveling to Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) whilst western tourists and Japanese prefer to purchase Bohemian Elephant pants when visiting Grand Palace, Emerald Buddha temple & Wat Pho. What you thought was the victory monument was actually Phra Sumen Fort. Last but not least, those Asian people wearing traditional Thai costumes were tourists, probably Chinese. 😂
Two things: The King Rama X doesn't live at the Grand Palace. Nor did his late father, the King Rama IX. I don't know if this is true but I heard that to be able to live inside the Grand Palace as a monarch, you have to be born at the place first - which isn't the case for our previous and current kings. The other thing is those boys and girls in traditional Thai outfits may not be local at all. Following the popularity of this Thai period drama in many parts of Asia - 'You' (Aojaow) OST Love Destiny |Pete Pol | Official MV - a lot of Asian tourists go to places like Wat Arun dressed that way with their rent outfits. It's a thing now. Westerners and visitors from other parts of the world, feel free to follow suit :-)
King Rama 1-8 lived in the Grand Palace, especially Rama 1-4 exclusively. King Rama V, VI, VII also have other palaces to live in. King Rama 8 mostly lived in Switzerland with the Queen Mother while being a young king undergoing school education there. He was shot dead in the Grand Palace when he became adult while briefly living in the Grand Palace. So King Rama 9, the younger brother, decided not to live in the Grand Palace at all. The Palace was/is then used for state reception occasionally when greeting foreign kings/president. King Rama X lives in the Dusit Palace and the old parliament building was turned into part of the Dusit palace complex. The new parliament complex is very grand situated on the bank of Chao Phraya River about 10 km from the Grand Palace further up Bangkok's perimeter.
