Bangladesh's Climate Refugees: Can They Fight The Rising Sea? | Insight | Climate Change In Asia

Over the last decade, nearly 700,000 Bangladeshis were displaced each year by natural disasters. During the rainy season, more than one-fifth of the country can be flooded at once and there is very little escape from gushing waters for the 165 million population. In 2017 monsoon season, the country faced some of the worst flooding in their history. Thousands of homes and rice crops were destroyed, and families were left struggling to afford food. And the situation is expected to get worse in years to come. By 2050, nearly 13 million people are expected to be displaced due to the rise of its sea level which is projected to rise 1.5 meters.
Insight journeys into the lives of some of the most ordinary people in Bangladesh to provide a micro perspective to the challenges of climate change. Can a poor country like Bangladesh withstand and cope with the worsening impact of the climate crisis? How can it ensure it leaves no one behind in its fight against climate change?

Climate problems was something the dictator General Ershad came to the UK and spoke about. Since 1991 the PM Hasina and Khaleda talk about it but have little global influence to do anything about it.

IF the problem is climate change, why it is so bad locally and not a problem elsewhere? The problem is people do not want flooding in their homes and yet they build on deltas that will sink without the flooding depositing mud on the land they built their homes on.

@@shuvosalauddin3030 No, I am not an idiot. I am a person that understands science. They talk about how the rising sea level is going to put millions of people at risk YET the rise is so slow a snail can keep ahead of it. Do they tell you that the land is SINKING a full centimeter some years? No, they say the sea is rising. Why is it rising so fast there and no where else in the world. Scientist have known for over a century that when a river delta gets flooded, the river deposits mud on top of mud. The weight of the new mud gradually pushes water out of the old mud. As it does, the land sinks. Do they blame the engineers for channeling the floods away from the cities? No of course not, that would mean the problem was theirs, created by their arrogance and their responsibility to fix. No, they want to blame America so they can tax America taxpayer into poverty. They hate that American stands against the communist regime and think they can break America by blaming something that has little real effect on us. IF they want a solution, all they have to do is put more soil above the river, just as nature has done for thousands of years. Claiming it is climate change is nothing but lies and propaganda.

I have seen a previous documentary about the internal refugees due to climate change in my country 2 years back, it was from DW. Textbooks contain causes and effects of climate change, the media and the majority people in BD are oblivious to the fact that climate change is here and will become worse. Govt. and policy makers think urban migration is due to economic development rather than due to river erosion or increased frequency of cyclones/flooding. Frankly, I dont see hope.

Hey god (Govt, Ngo, International organization) please help them. Environmental refugees are a very big problem in South Asia, we need to solve these problems as soon as possible, otherwise, it will be too late to save the climate change-affected population.

@roberthicks1612
@roberthicks1612 2 года назад
@@Liloldliz Read what I said again. I said it would not stop the *SINKING* of the land. Places like Bangladesh are SINKING, not eroding. These cities are built on river deltas. This is where the river slows down and deposits the mud it has been carrying for mile, sometimes hundreds of miles. When it does, it creates islands in the river and sometimes in the oceans. As the weight of the water in the mud is squeezed out, the land subsides. Under nature, more mud is deposited on the land as it sinks and the river floods, keeping the islands above sea levels. Then man comes along and builds cities on top of the deltas and gets upset when it floods. So they build walls and levies to keep the flood waters out, and dredge channels to keep the water away from the cities. Problem is, the water is still be squeezed out, causing the land to continue to sink. Eventually, the land will flood again. Trees will not stop that. Either they will be washed away, or they will be buried in mud.

The sea is not rising in Bangladesh, that is an out-and-out lie. Bangladesh is SINKING into the sea at 2-8 inches per year. This is ameliorated by silting. Bangladesh suffers flooding because of deforestation & the fact that a huge part of the country is the delta of many rivers, including the Ganges & Brahmaputra, & thus is low lying, and also suffers when ENSO is in La Nina phase. Absolutely nothing to do with climate change, this is NORMAL for Bangladesh. It has been so throughout the past few centuries at least. What makes this land so fertile, also makes it dangerous.
