Banned for Using AMD 

That is a anti cheat feature Valve has implemented a few years ago in csgo that blocks *any* programs that directly inject into the game unless they have gone through some verification process with Valve. That even affected Shadowplay and stuff like Game Recording in OBS (the game directly instead of just the full monitor) for some time.

Yeah I don't get how Linus and Luke completely missed the mark on this one. If they are saying "You will be VAC banned" in all caps its obviously because they very much can not detect this feature being enabled vs other ban worthy program manipulation. The entire talking points of "they should do this instead" become irrelevant.

I don't think they specifically targeted the AMD feature here. I think VAC just detected modified code and banned them.

Hold up AMD anti lag modifies the game DLLs?? Shouldn't EVERY anti cheat detect and flag it?

I imagine the VAC ban is automated, and changing it "right now", would mean turning it off for everyone, as a solution would have to be some sort of code-based.

The point of recoil patterns is that it makes the game consistent. It means that you know if you whiffed, you did well, or if you should've tapped/burst instead of the game deciding for you.

Clearly that's not a choice valve made, rather the driver trips some anti-cheat feature. So, valve currently can't tell if you're modifying your game to cheat or to improve perf. Hence the tweet

No in old CS there was no such limitation that forced them to make static spray patterns. Its a skill game, it was designed to not be random. It was designed for players to learn how to control it. The RNG is killing fast paced game play and making us all act like if we die in the game we die for real. And that is not fun. The only fun people get from the game now is entirely provided by other players. And we could just go outside and do that no need for internet or computers.

This is such a bad video and topic if you clearly have no idea how these functions work and can't understand that Valve putting a Tweet out when they find this out ASAP while they work on a fix to be the best immediate solution. Would you rather them just keep quiet and not notify anyone, letting the bans build up while you're fixing it? It takes a minute to write a tweet and hours to actually fix the problem, and this wasn't even Valve's fault. Complete miss.

AMDs way to implement this is actually BETTER. Because it doesnt require every game developer on earth to patch their game to enable "Nvidia Reflex". With AMDs approach - it just works with every game. Valve shoudl adapt their anti-cheat. Not the other way around.

i would put the blame on AMD. they should have contacted valve for this implementation.

AMD shouldn't be held responsible. They provided a great feature. That's all. Otherwise, even possessing a high end graphic card instead of a low end might be considered as cheating... If CS2 devs are against people using their hardware at its best, then they can as well avoid using Valve for their own shortsightedness. And if it was only a Valve move, then it's on them.

Once in awhile you guys remind me that you're really really good at tech, but just not software engineers. This is one of those times. Valve detecting that someone is screwing with the DLL but not detecting who or exactly how isn't at all surprising since normally you wouldn't care, and figuring it out would be violating the very principles they are enforcing; ie that software shouldn't be mucking about outside of it's own space.

Sorry this time Linus actually misses the mark 100%. Valve is not in fault here. Modifying DLL is one of the most common way for anti-cheat to detect cheat. What do you expect for it to do? knows who made the modification to DLL? that's already over-reaching in the privacy territory. There's nothing Valve can do that wasn't breaching user's privacy here. So they need to make the concession.

3:58 As a software engineer, I'm imagining somebody on one of the little cog teams making the decision to implement a cool feature to make their favourite game run better, nobody on their team thinking it was important enough to send up the chain, and it then getting shipped without fanfare just like 98% of code. This totally feels like an optimisation an engineer thought was cool, their boss said "go ahead", and didn't go beyond that!

If your feature behaves like a hack, dont be surprised if it gets identified as one.

Valve is not specifically targeting AMD features. The anti cheat software is detecting something odd messing with the game. Some people probably got banned. Reported it to Valve. So Valve sent out the statement as soon as possible. Maybe in the future they can implement it in an official way by working with AMD. But they are warning people that the software will ban them.

Concern with follow recoil in CS is that you are reacting to where the crosshair is telling you the next shot will land instead of you pre-emptively moving the crosshair to where the next shot will be based on the pattern. This is fine if you play casually or are still learning gun patterns but be aware that you are constantly playing catchup by reacting to what the crosshair tells you instead of internalizing the spray patterns. Maybe it helps some people learn the patterns easier?

You would think AMD would actually test their features. If they had tested anti lag they would know there was an issue once the tester gotten banned.

This remind me the recent issue that AMD had with Vega Graphics Driver with COD Warzone. I was unable to play COD MWII and Warzone for more than 1 month because an incompatibility issue with AMD Vega 56 and other cards drivers issues.

This is an anti-cheat software that works automatically. Valve didn't go like "Hey, we see some users using X, let's ban em". The software identified tampering with the game executable and responded accordingly.

Game developers/publishers/hardware companies automatically assuming everybody has a twitter and exclusively making critical announcements on that platform annoys me to no end

i think valve might come up with the conclusion after alot of user complain after getting ban. i think they might not have the tools to detect is the cause by AMD feature.

as far as i understand AMD did not work with Valve on this, Valve automatically vac bans anything that messes with code in game and this AMD feature works in that way, it just comes down to AMD not testing their feature enough and not working with Valve on this so they could come up with authentication way where game would trust those changes made by AMD feature and now there is a mess to clear up while cs2 situation is already sensitive.

I dont think its really fair to blame either of them. Amd just found a cool optimization to improve responsiveness. And its not major so i woudlnt have expected it to be an issue. And valves anti cheat just sees drivers fucking with their shit. Biggest issue is the wording of the tweet imo.

This is not a valve problem, they detect programs screwing with their game, it gets banned. They cant know for sure and cant comb through every case right now, VAC is automated.

I dont like how valve is developing but valve is kind of in the right here. AMD should adjust their drivers and not mess with DLLs. And if they are messing with DLLs its probably a feature not on linux.

This is not Valve's fault. If AMD isn't telling them that they're implementing code injection alongside their drivers then what is Valve supposed to do? They implemented something which behaves *exactly* like cheat hacks, of course it was detected as a cheat.

Dk if Linus will ever read this, but this is a big L on AMDs part and I think Linus missed the mark on this one. Most cs players know you cant mess with game dlls or you will get vac banned. This happened with other 3rd party apps like shadowplay or apps that boost in-game saturation. There is no excuse for AMD to not know that. Even if they didn't have a rep at Valve to talk to and help them with implementation, they should have caught this is QA. Just by installing the driver on a random pc while testing and logging into a private server, they would have seen that VAC detects it as a cheat. The VAC anti-cheat is an automatic system, if AMD didn't inform Valve of what they are shipping out, we cant expect the anti-cheat to "just work"

CS spray patterns are there so that you don't SPRAY its nothing to do with "realism", just tap and burst, don't follow pros, you won't ever get a match with people with those skills, i win most fights against even the most skilled players by taps to head and head only and bursts, this is the way..

Thats great that linus is happy the crosshair moves, but wait until he tries playing online and dies to people he can't even see, or dies behind a wall due to how trash the subtick and servers are currently.

Valve can't really fix this. As far as their anti-cheat is concerned, AMD's driver appears to be a custom cheat driver trying to inject into the game to change game mechanics or render tracers or something. If they made an exception for AMD, cheaters could fake being an AMD driver and be easily undetected.

I love how people are debating whose fault this is when it is both amd and valves fault. AMD pushed a gaming-focused driver update while not verifying with one of the most popular games (according to Steam charts CS2 is #1) that it would work well with the anti-cheat system, considering they are modifying dll files. AMD clearly did not do this. Now Valve is to blame for how they handled this. Like first of all anything that will impact a significant amount of users (32% of Steam users use AMD) should never be told to them on Twitter. It should come from the game itself or Steam also the anticheat started vac banning users. Imagine not knowing about this amd thing and now you have a vac ban, thats sucks and is entirely Valves fault. They should have an AMD representative.

i played CS Literaally since the earlyest aviable betas and topped it around 1.0 today i would never ever play a shooter again with crosshairs. and no ADS it feels not like shooting a gun.... it feels like you drive a character-person vehicle that is shooting a gun.

I paid for the game. I paid for the hardware with the drivers. Fuck this punishing honest people who just want a better experience. This is also very anti-competitive. One company gets a pass but not the other.

There was a similar situation with MW2 in which people got banned for letting Corsair drivers in the background. Were just a few people from what i know, also, don't know the exact reason for it.

16:00 I know Doom isn't exactly the same as CS, but I've seen Linus play enough Doom to know that if he really sets himself into the game, he can be pretty darn accurate. But am I understanding things correctly from what they've been saying that CS apparently won't have the bullets land where the scope shows it will land? As in, the bullets trajectory will be affected by decrease in speed, drop radius after reaching the apex, wind speed, etc? I always thought CS wasn't that realistic about it, that where you aimed with the scope was where the bullet would hit.

Valve is not in fault here. Modifying DLL is one of the most common way for anti-cheat to detect cheat. What do you expect for it to do?

2:00 no it is not the correct way implement it in the game it should be handled by the drive that is the problem with NVIDIA. NViDIA could implement those thing like tis to but devoloper has to pay to use this feature that way NVIDIA build it like this. the same with rtx if i build a Programm that uses the RX cores i cant use it with NVIDIA becuse i need a licens for but AMD on the other hands there is no need for i even can easy implement Raytracing and FSR in games that officiel dont dupport those features. the whole situation with new grafick cards and ther driver and propirotarry software is a whole mess for the game industry. DirectX12 has addons on addons on addons. and Microsoft dont care about that becuse they dont need those features. looking back to vista bacuse the new ui Microstoft needed to update ther DirectX the same goes back to the Xboxes becuse ther needs are those addons are now a part of DirectX but now i dont see a standard. AMD INTEL and NVIDIA need to stop build ther properitary addons and make a standard. i see it comming if Microsoft have enough and males a new DirectX some titles wont work or the performance gets really worse. DirectX11 to 12 was a example of this beahavior and most devoloper updated gemes to compensate this or they did go back to DirectX11. the same will happen agin. and valve is a big asshole of company in terms of rules for games. they change there minds about faster as change there underwear.

It sounds to me like this is something that AMD and Steam has been in communication about to a somewhat degree, but somewhere down the line, a communication error happened, causing this AMD Driver Feature to completely catch Steam off-guard, meaning that they didn't have any time before the launch of the AMD Driver Feature to fix the - what I assume to be automated - VAC Ban engine to take into account AMD's new Driver Feature when looking for cheaters and ignore that Feature in the process of eliminating cheaters. Because of this, it's going to take time for Steam to fix the VAC Ban engine to where it ignores the AMD Driver Feature, and in the meantime, there's literally nothing that Steam can do but throw out a warning to its players not to enable the AMD Driver Feature, and in the same tweet, let AMD know about the issue so that they can start working on their side of things as well. Another reason that Steam might have tagged AMD directly in the tweet is that a lot of AMD users would be following AMD Twitter Account, and tagging AMD would increase the chances of potentially affected AMD users being saved before it's too late, as any Tweet that AMD is tagged in, AMD's followers will see, too. I honestly don't think this was done with any negativity in mind.

There is a pattern people need to learn you dont need a crosshair

I've never cheated, I get banned for using RX 7800 xt with this enabled. Already banned for 5 days.. many years I had no issue while playing CSGO with GTX970, now this. The VAC ban is still there and they just say that it will need to be resolved by them.. OK, how much longer? This is crazy.
