I never get tired of watching the epic Silivas vs Shushunova clash of the titans in Seúl. It was extraordinary theater and the best possible gymnastics. Each at her greatest, trying to knock the other over. In Seúl Shushunova added the knee tumbling pass which I’ve only seen another gymnast attempt. Is that also banned nowadays? I just can’t imagine the level of risk involved…

Ever since I watched her, you know that she is one tough gymnast ever. Doing a Thomas Salto is something ordinary for her. She loves to take risks & she knows she can do it. She would always do the extreme & difficult tumbling passes. She will be remembered as one of the best gymnasts of all time. 💯 ❤️
Yo me acuerdo muy de ella, fue extraordinaria, sus rutinas súper creativas y muy bien ejecutadas, y también recuerdo una caída que tuvo en la plataforma. Pero era genial.❤
Just for clarification…The primary skill being shown in these performances is that thomas salto. It’s banned because there’s a higher margin for error to sustain severe neck injury if you land incorrectly. The timing has to be just right. Under-rotating can make you a quadriplegic in flash. One of the most well-known instances of this is Elena Mukhina who is, still to this day, one of my all-time favorites. I don’t necessary disagree with the ban, but damn it the skill looks amazing! Also, the floor has much more bounce and stability now to allow for the necessary power to consistently fully rotate the skill.
Shushunova performed an Arabian 1 3/4. The Thomas Salto has an extra twist, but Shushunova performed both versions (1.5 and .5 twists) in competition and in exhibitions. The scary thing about the bouncier floors are the kick back a gymnasts can get at the right/wrong angle. I am glad the skills are no longer permitted. They’re too dangerous.
@@worldartgym I think the kick back would more commonly cause whiplash rather than actual injury. The way the floors were made before though… it’s actually pretty terrifying to think about trying to rotate this skill, especially if you’re coming back from an injury or even just having an off day. Either way I don’t think it should be encouraged.
The greatest gymnast of all time... So much better than the overhyped simon biles with her robotic moves, while Helena has so much grace, elegance, artistry plus her jjaw dropping routine.
I though I was the only one to think that Simone is not all that people say... Not because of the forbidden moves, more because there are no classy and delicacy today.
Yeah. Simone is everywhere!!! It is sickening. They say she is the greatest gymnast of all time. How? There is no beauty or elegance in what she is doing. Her inverted toes, crooked arms’ lines, akward landings, she cannot hear the music. Only the level of difficulty is great. So no, she is not the greatest.
In this fall that was banned from the performance, there was a possibility that the gymnast would suffer a serious injury to her neck or spine, resulting in irreversible paralysis. Remember Elena Muckhina?
So I’ve seen her do it in 1989 and 1991 but the video quality is low, that’s why it wasn’t part of this video… but… now I’m curious if she did it in 1986! Please send the competition if you know! She did the 1.5 twist roll-out in a 1989 exhibition in Belgium and the “pro worlds” in 1991.
If these young women work perfect this, you should not be able to ban it. The only reason is the people who banned it are way too scared to try themselves. Cowards put rules on brave.
People always have something to say before researching. Gymnasts have been seriously injured and one even died attempting this skill. I am a former gymnast and the issue is with landing on your neck. Perfecting a skill has nothing to do with anything. Mistakes happen. People get hurt. Think before responding. Good lord……
You sound ridiculous. This skill landed wrong could seriously injure or kill you. It has nothing to do with cowardice. Everything to do with people making mistakes and being human. The funny thing is that’s when injuries happen most. But you would know that if you knew anything about this sport. Which you clearly don’t. I am an ex gymnast 🤸 but I did gymnastics for nearly twenty years. Performed in the circus.
