Here I make a batch of "hunger pills" which are a compact, portable food described in the Bansenshukai, the ninja text written in 1676 by Fujibayashi Yasutake. The Bansenshukai is available in english in a book titled, "The Book of the Ninja" by Antony Cummins and Yoshie Minami.

Adding ginseng to pemmican might be a tastier alternative.lol In regards to the hunger pills though,did the book give any indication as to the shelf life?

The real question we should be asking is, do they work? You made a batch Gabriel, so did you eat the batch?

+Shigure Sohma I used them when I went camping in my "Ninja Camping" video. Yes they work surprisingly well. All I brought for food camping was a can of soup, coffee, and those pellets. From about 1 or 2 in the afternoon to about 11 AM the next day, that's all I ate. In the afternoon I waited until I felt really hungry, then eat just one to see the effect. Just one was enough to feel something in your stomach as well as a rush from the ginseng. So during that whole period I ate about 5 or 6 of them and wasn't hungry. You absolutely have to drink water with them because they're so dry and basically taste like dirt.

Thanks for the info, it's very helpful. I wonder if adding other things for flavoring would help, or perhaps a dipping sauce? If you try it, let me know. Take care and keep up the good work.

Shigure Sohma Well I stored them in salt, and the little that dissolved on the outside improved the taste a lot. The taste sort of grows on you. It's a healthy dirt taste ha ha.

@3816390
@3816390 10 лет назад
that would be close to around $150.00 Australian Dollars Japanese Sake not cheap here unfortunately. which is a real bummer But everytime I travel to Japan I feel like a kid in a candy-store there are so many different kinds there are literary aisle upon aisle of the stuff...And thats not including all the boutique breweries around. I just LOVE the stuff. .

Just a heads up, California Sakes are very inexpensive, and if you are doing it specifically for cooking you really won't notice. If you still need help (3 years later) i can compile a list of california sake brands that are inexpensive, because I work at a liquor store and deal with distributors almost every day. Japanese Sake is more expensive, but they do have cheap options if you don't mind something generally unflavored, with added rice liquor. It's the japanese equivalent to malt drinks such as smirnoff ice or the American 40oz Colt45. I highly recommend finding Go-Shu, the Australian sake. It's a very fine drink, with premium ingredients, but costs roughly $17 per 750ml bottle. You can likely find it cheaper at a liquor store in your area that mainly sells wine, as they generally get bulk deals if they buy more than 2-3 cases. Good luck my friend.

I'm curious as to about how long these keep for.
@gabrielrossa5004
@gabrielrossa5004 7 лет назад
I suspect a very long time if they're kept dry. I kept them in ziploc bags where the bags had salt all around them in the refrigerator and they seemed edible after a year. They are rock hard and by using sake instead of water, mold doesn't want to grow.

+MrBrunosvensson yep. Maybe some kind of fermentation? It said to soak it for 3 years as the sake evaporates. It's not very clear.
@mike42356
@mike42356 5 лет назад
Yummy! I think the taste is cause it's raw, including raw flour... The "cooking" was supposed to be the fermentation, I guess. So, have you tried them after three years?

Page 471, says how to make hunger pills and thirst pills, you can translate ryo and that stuff for the amount if you have the book called "The Secret Traditions Of The Shinobi: Hattori Hanzo's Shinobi Hiden And Other Ninja Scrolls" by Antony Cummins and Yoshie Minami

gilgsn You have to consider that you're only supposed to eat three lumps the size of peach pits per day.
@Shin_Lona
@Shin_Lona 4 года назад
I think maybe the recipe was calling for fresh grated ginseng? The moisture content would add to the weight resulting in a significant reduction in volume for the specified amount. I don't really know much about ginseng, but based on the information I do have and some personal experience - it gets you jacked. If that was in fact the intended amount, well... that totally explains everything about shinobi.
