On 2/22/59 the McDonnell F2H-4 Banshee BuNo 127614 was on a flight of two aircraft from NAS North Island, San Diego to Alameda Naval Air Station. The F2H-4 piloted by Lt. James F. Wyley descended into the fog and rain while flying over the Santa Cruz Mountains and struck trees on a ridge causing it to crash into the heavily wooded valley below. His wingman Ens. L. L. Marshall reported the accident and Lt. Wyley's aircraft, and body, were located after a five hour search by Santa Clara County Deputy Sheriffs.
I took this video while searching for the wreckage. The crash site is off highway 9 and Skyline boulevard, near Saratoga, California. Getting there involves a lot of bushwhacking, and the hike is quite strenuous.

Visited the crash site with a friend yesterday and paid quiet respect to LT. Wyley. Much of the wreckage shown in this video is still there, and I recognize several of the pieces from my photographs. But I wonder how much is now buried under the fallen trees & debris that are at the site. We uncovered several pieces that we noticed only because of the sound of our trek poles hitting something metal. As a lifelong metal worker and with some background in aircraft maintenance, the many points of structural failure were very interesting to me. I didn't realize it at the time but I actually did a hot section rebuild on that very same model engine in A&P school back in the 90s. I never dreamed the next time I would see one would be like this 25+ years later. Thanks to Norcal Wreckchaser for properly honoring LT. Wyley with the plaque.

It seemed like the right thing to do.

Me and a friend have been around the area looking for the wreckage, we passed the old car that is in the area and found some pieces of what we think was the fuselage in the bottom of the valley, we didn’t have enough daylight to locate the plane but we know it is nearby due to what we found. Planning on returning soon to finish our search, intending to keep the location unknown so it does not become well traveled

I'm still looking for tips on where to find this. Every couple of years I circle back.. Getting old so I gotta get this one off the bucket list! Great video!

Hi Bruno, Is there a way you can share with me the location and particulars on how to reach this site... (Obviously privately). How do you suggest we do so?

Were there any survivors, and how many were on board? Thank you.

I've lived in Aptos in Santa Cruz for 20 years. Was this a small private plane. A piper?

Chrissy: it was a Banshee military jet. The lone pilot did not survive.
