On 2/22/59 the McDonnell F2H-4 Banshee BuNo 127614 was on a flight of two aircraft from NAS North Island, San Diego to Alameda Naval Air Station. The F2H-4 piloted by Lt. James F. Wyley descended into the fog and rain while flying over the Santa Cruz Mountains and struck trees on a ridge causing it to crash into the heavily wooded valley below. His wingman Ens. L. L. Marshall reported the accident and Lt. Wyley's aircraft, and body, were located after a five hour search by Santa Clara County Deputy Sheriffs.
I took this video while searching for the wreckage. The crash site is off highway 9 and Skyline boulevard, near Saratoga, California. Getting there involves a lot of bushwhacking, and the hike is quite strenuous.
