To those who don’t understand. The dumpling represents her son and the journey they had as she raised him. In the end she ate Bao because she's swallowing the fact that her son is now grown and no longer a child. But in the end, it was a happy ending. Happy chinese new year everyone.

I know I'm late but it's not that bad.. I'm currently in high school but it's a boarding school and I had to leave my family. At first it was bad and I cried constantly but it only lasted for 2 days, it's not that bad once you have friends especially if they're your roommates

Okay, so, I think when she “ate” him, it was like she said something horrible and couldn’t take it back. After what she had done, I think he must’ve still decided to leave? But then he came back and they probably made up, this is my theory.

I watched a narrated version and it said that the son was ‘ungrateful’ or something so I guess he must have done/ said something horrible to his mother too, but it’s just a theory Edit: atleast it was kind of what the narrator said, it was in another language

I absolutely love the symbolism behind this. It’s so sweet and so sad, but so true. Most mums would feel like that if they were lonely and the one love she has - aka her son - leaves her. When she cried after eating the dumpling and her son entered.. my heart melted. This is made very well and I hope this studio makes more but if they don’t, I hope they get everything they deserve from this one. It was amazing. ❤️

Now what makes this short so accurate is because some parents feel that way how you want to protect your children from what they think is dangerous sometimes kids won’t be there forever but this short shows how hard it is to let your kid go, but still they will love you like how you gave them and that’s why I love this short

Oh the part that she ate the dumplings is very symbolic. It means that the mom says that having the dumpling inside the belly is easier than letting go the dumpling. She wishes the dumpling to be in her belly where she knows where is the baby and she won't have to let go.

I’m actually chinese to so this is so emotional to me ;-; also btw it’s pronounced bau not bow also I read the book dumpling soup pretty much it’s a book about a family doing a reunion on New Year’s Eve and they of course telling by the name of the book they made dumpling soup

I think what was weird about this is most of Pixar's shorts never dealt with symbols; what you see on the screen is what's really happening. So when she freaking ate him everybody's jaws hit the floor and I was not the only one making a WTF face. It's the sort of thing where you understand the symbol after her son appears, but it's a weird experience because you thought that everything you saw just happened when it was really all in her head.
