Situated almost 2 Kms away from the inner Golconda fort, inside the premises of the Naya Qila is a huge tree which looks like it’s been brought from an Alien World. With a trunk that is almost 25 meters in circumference, it has a hollow cavity inside which is so big that according to popular legend 40 people fit inside.
This tree has been here for at least 600 years according to locals and historians alike. A native of the Island of Madagascar, it’s called the Boabab tree and is pretty famous in Africa where it’s associated with mystical powers. In a town in Africa, there is a church built inside one of these trees. There are many stories about how this Boabab ended up here in Golconda.
According to some it was planted by the Arabian merchants who were frequent travellers along the African coastline and might have planted this tree during the reign of the Qutb Shahi kings. According to some it was planted by wandering Fakirs when they visited Golconda. How did they get a hold of it? Nobody knows for sure.
