I'm embarrassed to say it took me a long time to settle down and look into this Baofeng squelch issue that has plagued the radios for a very long time. I share what I found. This is extremely helpful info. The info has been out there a long time but I've just recently came across it so I wanted to share with my viewers. Whether you like Baofeng's or not this actually did make a big difference. Now I'll probably actually use them once in a while instead of paper weights. I still don't get why Baofeng does this kind of silly stuff. Why can't it just be right from the factory. Anyhow. Hope you enjoy and thanks for watching! Please like and Sub. Wow, thank you so much! Your squelch settings turned my UV-5R's into usable radios! I about chucked mine into a lake several times. Now they work as they should. Everyone with a Baofeng needs to watch this.

Wanted to drop a note to you to say Thank You for this video. We have some Baofeng UV-5G units we bought so we can communicate while parking our giant RV. When we'd go to use them, though, it was nothing but static unless transmitting. To the point, really, they were unusable. I watched your video, ordered the programming cable, set all the squelch values like you did in your chart, and voila! The walkies were as good as gold. Doing exactly what we wanted, without a lot of stupid noise. I was ready to throw them out and buy something else, but you saved me a good amount of money! Thank you so much! 🙂

Thank You so much! I Actually purchased a UV-9R Pro and sent it back. I thought there was something seriously wrong with it. I got the replacement and it did the same thing! It was constantly dropping a Repeater, even though I no there was no way it should. My scanner was still holding the repeater because it was still up. I was ready to send this one back or just throw it out the windows and count it up as a $24 loss. THANK YOU!

WOW!! Fixed mine. Thank you so much! I made settings the same for VHF and UHF. 0:0, 1:5, 2:10, 3:15, 4:25, 5:35, 6:45, 7:55, 8:65, 9:75. I tried squelch setting of 7 (55) and IT IS AWESOME. Lucky 7s!!!!!!!!

Some radios, like my Baoefeng UV-5G, there's a RESET setting in there. Haven't need it yet, fortunately.

I didn't even know about this until now! My UV5R squelch was factory set at 21-29! Too strong. No wonder it wasn't very sensitive. I now have it set at 0-0, 1-1, 2-5, 3-10, 4-15, 5-20, 6-25, 7-27, 8-28, 9-29. Thanks for this video! 😊PS. Never have much interference to constantly break squelch. Glad this is so programmable.

Thank you Northman, excellent post. After some experimentation, I tweaked your settings a bit and used a 0-60 value range (0,5,10,15,20,27,35,43,51,60). After uploading the changes to my BF-F8HP I tried hitting all my local repeaters to make sure the squelch would open. Everything is working normally, except background noise is now greatly reduced!

Yeah.. pure software folks don't realize that coding audio levels is not linear, but logarithmic. Thanks for publishing this. I didn't know that was a thing in CHIRP.

Great video.. I had 3 fangs, one is resting quietly at the bottom of a reservoir..I was more devastated by losing the Nagoya 771 attached than the radio. But anyway.. I do these settings on all mine.. makes a huge difference! I’ll have to find you Tanerite a AR video.. sounds like it could be a blast! Yuk-yuk. 73

Yeah I've actually had one set on squelch level one with a very high value and it was cutting out everything pretty much. Good luck with it.

Great information. I've been looking at the GT-3TP but I've held back because of this known issue. After seeing this I took a look at the settings on my UV-5R and sure enough the stock numbers are nonsense. Setting 2 is 32 and then it goes up 1 or 2 for each setting after that. I set it to 7, 14, 21, etc and that seems to work great. So now I'm ordering a GT-3TP.

Just came across this!! I carry a radio for work, but the squelch has been so bad i stopped....cant wait to try this out. If it works i am pretty sure I will be programming a bunch of radios :) Now i need to how to change the squelch on the radio....im betting can fire it out. :) Thank you for sharing!!

Thanks for this! My UV9R Pro squelch behaved strangely right from the start. After watching your video and then looking at the Miklor document I could see why after taking a look at the service settings of my handheld. What were they thinking? I completely copied your settings to my UV-9G, and I wasn’t sure if it would work because it wasn’t mentioned at all 😂 and it has SERIOUSLY boosted its performance. Either that or I’m just crazy lol but it seems to work a treat! Thank you!

There’s a repeater near me with some seriously impressive range (covering most of northeastern Colorado) so I’m never alone while I’m delivering pizzas haha I just wish the hospital by my work didn’t put off so much rf lol

I recently bought a 5r pro for the same reason you did. Also had a problem with the squelch where past 0, unless the signal is super strong (like the National Weather service station near me) it doesn't pick anything up.

Maybe they will actually put FM chips back in them. My GMRS UV-9G won’t pick up any FM stations as advertised. Kinda made me gun shy about purchasing any other models of Baofengs.

So I just got a UV9R and seem to have the opposite issue with the squelch. I set it to ZERO and get into a repeater but hear nothing back. My friend in the same room with me can hear me getting into the repeater,but I RX nothing. I tried every repeater in my area...nothing. Is the CHIRP program squelch feature on the latest version or do I need to get it from a specific website?

For some reason my UV-5R doesnt not show a Service Settings option anymore in CHIRP. It did in the beginning. Any ideas on how to bring it back to be able to adjust the settings?

i have a UV5-R and chirp says it won't upload the squelch settings when I try to change them. says that some radios with my firmware isn't compatible.

Are you referring to the problem where even at level 9, it will make short bursts of static even when there is no one around for miles transmitting? I have that issue with both my baofengs. My old one never did that untill very recently. My new one started doing that out of the box

That is correct. Out of the box, most if not all UV5Rs, BF-F8HPs, etc. the squelch settings, even at level 9 is usually in the low 20s where the range that you can set with Chirp ranges from 0 - 129. Of course 129 is way too high and would make the radio deaf. However, setting the level in Chirp progressively higher from setting 0 to setting 9 will actually increase the threshold that blocks interference or a signal like the radio squelch should work. What I used and I'm very satisfied was, 0 - 0 / 1 - 5 / 2 - 15 / 3 - 25 / 4 - 35(my normal squelch level) 5 - 45 / 6 - 55 / 7 - 65 / 8 - 75 / 9 - 90. Good luck.

@@kx5enot too long after posting my comment, I leaned about being able to adjust the squelch values for each level. I set mine to approximately what you have yourself set too. And some a little higher. But I was still getting the exact same problem on all frequencies and every squelch level. I ended up going with the baofeng UV-82HP. Right out of the box I no longer had that burst of white noise every few seconds on any frequency.

I use the same values for VHF and for UHF. VHF has settings 1 through 9 and UHF has settings 1 through 9 just put in the values you want from 0 to 100. Starting 0 at zero value then 1 at 6 then just consecutively increase each number as you go do the same for UHF. I spread mine out about every 10 and start from there and see if that helps your static issues.

Ive got the UV9R Pro and I have it setup on all of my channels. The Squelch does suck on it and I have attempted the change of the service settings in Chirp. Even with the change when I download the config from the radio it still shows those dumb default squelch settings. Have you confirmed which version of Chirp works on the adjustment? I am using the absolute latest at this time.

Another user said they were having issues with chirp recently. I haven't check or updated mine for some time. So I have not confirmed that it still works. Hopefully they keep those options available because it really does make a difference when you can get the setting to take.

Also some radios it doesn't work. I just remembered that. You may have to dig deeper and see if the newer radios with the newer firmware work with it or not. Here's an article that might help. See if your radio is supported. www.miklor.com/COM/UV_Squelch.php

@@northmanproject4007 I'm using the latest Chirp version and just programmed 2 new radios, 3/22/24, and the squelch fix your video is about worked just fine. I reopend the file after making the squelch setting changes and it saved them no problem. I use the following setting for my squelch values on both VHF and UHF. 0 - 0 / 1 - 5 / 2 - 15 / 3 - 25 / 4 - 35(my normal squelch level) 5 - 45 / 6 - 55 / 7 - 65 / 8 - 75 / 9 - 90 . I've been using these settings for a couple of months with very few problems. You still can go through some larger towns that intermod will get through the squelch but that happens with all brand radios with Wide Receivers. Good video and I'm glad you made it.

My issue is the tone squelch setting does not save to img file. I can open my latest img file, add a frequency, save it, load to radio, and check menu on radio. The radio says off for R-CTCS. I open Chirp, reload the file and sure enough the Tone squelch has been reset back to 88.5 Any suggestions?

I'm not really sure what to suggest maybe just try and look for something on one of the chirp forums. I don't think I've come across that issue myself yet.

In CHIRP, with an image of your radio open, adjust the 'Carrier Squelch' and experiment from there. Mine is set at 1 :) Hope this helps :)

Maybe “Reset All”, then save a fresh img file off the radio, and start fresh and see if the issue persists.

Be sure the Tone Mode tab, the tab just to the left of the Tone tab is set to TONE in its menu. It is the top selection. It turns the Tone Mode on and that should save the Tone Frequency when you save the new settings.

So downloading cherp is kinda mandatory? I just bought a new Nagoya antenna hoping to get in contact with someone, "silent" i cant even get NOAA. So now i know its a squelch

@@northmanproject4007 I have never faced such a problem, as far as I have asked others, they do not have such a problem either. The problem is that the walkie-talkie works perfectly, but after a while the walkie-talkie just freezes and the talk button or other buttons don't work anymore, but I can hear others, but I can't answer anything because the talk button just doesn't work anymore, but when I take out the battery and put it back in, it immediately works and I can't figure it out What's the problem.

My firmware is BFB297 , have to give this a try..thx. I bought a Baufeng UV-5R when they 1st came out. Use it mostly as a Police scanner. I notice that when I recieve a transmission..fine..till I push any buttons..then the radio freezes..unable to recieve tranmissions.. If you press ur ear to the radio speaker..you hear a clicking sound.... Police scanner in back ground works. Have to shut off the Unit & turn it back on..fine..till you push any buttons. Found out after years of this headache..that the radio goes nuts whn you shut of keypad 'Beep'.. Turn on KeyPad & unit works fine. Just in as anybody had/has this problem..please past this infor on.

I have the opposite problem. I adjusted my squelch like you, but even with a weak but readable station it doesn’t trigger the squelch. I can use monitor and hear it fine, but even with a squelch of 1 (5), it doesn’t trigger audio. Any ideas anyone ?

Well my first question is what are your squints values? Maybe you just have to lower them a bit. Like I said in the video start really low progressively increase.

It doesn't in a new file but it does have the settings tab in a saved file. You have to save the file and the settings tab will appear beside the memories tab.
