Baofeng UV-5R Mod for Allstar & IRLP Nodes (Ham Radio)

There are many options for node radios. I fell the Baofeng UV-5R is the best option because: The process is very simple to setup. If you decide to put the radio back in service, you can without much work ( reconnect the speaker wires ).
I know the UV-5R Handheld does cost a little more than the 888 but, the end result is much cleaner. The wire harness from the DMK URI to the HT is a Plug-n-Play harness.
The only thing that needs done is remove a resister and add a short 30ga jumper wire.
Remove resistor 5:40
Jumper wire 5:52
Wire harness Pinouts 7:30

Thanks for the video. It looks like you reassigned 2.5R1 to COS, by removing the black resistor. Does that not also disable "TX Data" (PC programming)? If so, it might be good to warn users that you will permanently lose PC programming capability. I chose to do COS by grounding 3.5tip (which carries voltage via a resistor) with an open collector NPN transistor fed (through a base resistor) from the same PIN2, which results in an active-low COS. Also, you're showing DB25-23 (RIGHT_OUT) going to 3.5R1, when normally Allstar uses DB25-22 (LEFT_OUT) for audio feeding the transmitter.

A NOTE FOR "HACKERS": this mod is meant to ASK op only, not for FSK. The UV5R (as most the analog Baofengs) are based on SA818 transceiver module, wich is not suitable for FSK. So... this WILL NOT turn your UV5R into a radio modem!!!!

So the radio would just be transmitting what it gets from the PC over the internet?

I am curious, why put the output onto a DB25 serial port? I'm not familiar with the Allstar nodes but the IRLP boards use a DB9 connector. I've done this mod for an IRLP node with a UV-5R. That radio worked for 2 and a half years before the transmitter finally bit the dust. :) I thought that was really good for a 30 dollar cheapie node radio. Have to really watch for solder bridging on that IC chip though! Turned one into a brick. Ha! Lessons learned.
