Welcome to OnThrTrailRadio ___ looking for a good GMRS radio? Well, the UV5G/UV5X is a great starter GMRS radio. in this video, I go over all the buttons and menu items that are important to a bew GMRS user.
I just applied for my GMRS license today and I'm getting ready to order a pair of these. I will probably watch this again when they come as this will be a big help. Thanks for the info!
@@OnTheTrailRadio They came Thursday and I've been playing with them. Pretty cool but confusing when you don't know what you're doing, lol. I've been watching that maniac "NotaRubicon" and one of his videos takes you step by step through the setup which really helped a lot. I might end up getting a mobile unit also in the future if I really get into it.
There are guides on the web. You need to make an account first, then get you FRN number then apply for the liscene then pay the $35 fee. It took me about 30 minutes
Fast forward to September 2023, the model I received has a case that says "Baofeng UV-5R" with a small round orange sticker under the battery that reads "GMRS". My primary complaints are: (1) the booklet, although well-written, contains significant errors, and (2) DCS and CTCS tones cannot be entered from the keyboard: can only be programmed with CHIRP software. Baofeng customer service staff was very prompt, responding to my questions and comments within 24 hours. The model is listed as a "Radioddity UV-5G" in CHIRP.
Yeap. A year later with them and I never use it anymore. I should... but I don't. My midland 50 watt, my retevis RB17P, my UV5R... just too much better.
I also see in the manual that ctcss and dcs tones cannot be set in channel mode. And only channels 1 - 30 can be transmitted on. How am I supposed to hit a repeater that requires a ctcss tone to use? Or turn on a privacy code in simplex? It seems that I can't. It's always turned off. Can I only set it with chirp? Meaning I can't switch codes for a different repeater, or to match a friend's code on the fly? That's stupid. Or do I misunderstand things?
Ty for this share bud, I could actually follow along without being distracted, excellent review, for another video can you please, do a detailed review of your HAM Radio and also how to program using CHIRP for windows 10, would greatly appreciate it, until next time take care bud.
@Ata Glance New video up. It's roughly 20 minutes long and explains the in and outs of the UV5R and how to program it in chirp. I will also do a UV5R front face panel how-to soon.
Chirp you need to clone from radio before doing it. Follow along my other video about how to use chirp. Hit me up if chirp still dosent work. Also my TikTok has similar tips and trucks about how to hear more things.
