As someone who wasn't a fan of the former President- I came into watching this jaded, but the answer given blew me away. He praised and critiques both sides in a way rarely heard by anyone in power. I genuinely think 99% of people are good people, and would never purposefully insult or attack someone, just ignorant to the norms or feelings of those different from themselves or their tribe, as mentioned. Thank you for the time, sweat and tears invested in all you do!

RESPECT is the main ingredient to the cure for Racism. If everyone can start each interaction with that, things can get better. Everything else matters also but it all starts with respect.
@TheTonyspik
@TheTonyspik 3 года назад
At first I was going to disagree, as I felt like this sounded like a minimization of systemic racism and more a focus on individual racism. But even from a systemic standpoint respect is relevant. Because that fact that we have systemic racism, demonstrated that their is a big lack of respect for people's right to justice. Apathy is a lack of respect. @@nunook5522 So keep crying about racism, even tho majority of whites are not racists will fix the problem? Hmm... how will it work in that way? What good will come with talking and crying about racism? If you stop talking about it (but still punish those hate speechers) and make the n-word hate speech, even if its black people using it. Then eventually, it will become a thing of the past. But now, when black people keep using it and degrade themselves, the previous hate will get reminded all the time. Look at Indians (asians), they were slaves to muslims for 500 years and to the Brits for 200 years. Do they live in the past? Nope. Some of them do, but majority of them intelligent people, uses it as a fuel, to make their children study and become smarter. Do they call those who wants to study house n*gr*? C**n? Uncle Tom? Its black racism against other blacks for wanting to be successful 😂

@@vipr1142 First, let me hit you with this: BLACK PEOPLE ARE NOT A MONOLITH! We do not walk around 24/7 looking for or crying racism. But we do recognize it when we see it no matter how blatant or subtle. Yes I know some of us use that word as a term of endearment, but the majority of us do not, because we recognize that word was used to demean and degrade. As far begrudging others their quest to succeed, it has many layers to it. Do you have any Black people you associate with, and not the ones who've forgotten where they've come from? A lot of us celebrate someone trying to better their situation. Go talk to them about it. I'm getting the impression you live in a bubble. You can't understand being uninformed.

@@nunook5522 You do tho. Any chance you can find, you cry about r*cism. Any chance you can find, you want to become a victim. Thats why you guys are whining about things of the past, that had 0 effect in your life. Making up scenarios that never happened and try to pretend that r*cism happens as soon as you step out of the door. R*cism will never go away, no matter how many protests you do. And how r*cist yourself become against whites. The only way to get rid of it, is by punishing those who is r*cist in public. And stop talking about it everyday in media. Because these false stories and accusations, also *breeds* r*cism. When you put all whites in the same box (because of what 1% of the population does), you create anger because you falsly accuse the whites for taking part of it. Just the same way, r*cist cops are accusing innocent black males creating hatred toward cops.

This was a wonderful answer. I love that he mentioned the fact that fearing those that are different is something hardwired into the human brain, and that it’s something we have to fight against, because that’s something I think to. It’s a natural evolution of humans to protect Us by fearing Them. It used to keep us safe, and now we have to fight against it to try to be more human and less animal instinct. But it’s definitely worth it to do so. Most of my best friendships have been with people that are different from me.

Racism is not spawned by fear or hatred. Those two factors would drive people away from what they hate fear. Racism demands control and subjecting others to one's will. Thus, mainly in the US, racism has been created by ego and greed. The idea of superiority topped off with wanting what another has is the root of US racism. Once the damage has been done in the oppressive acts, then other emotions become involved.
@jakeand9020
@jakeand9020 3 года назад
Fear can generate a multitude of actions, one of the more common ones is to control that which you fear and make it lesser to you, thus not something to be afraid of. Fear absolutely breeds racism, though it is definitely not the only thing. President Obama is absolutely right, there is no magic wand answer to solve it, if there is, I certainly don't have it, but I can tell you that the answer is not racism, or what people like to call anti-racism.
@BronzeSista

A lot of it is pride, you're right its not fear, and sometimes has hateful undertones, but not always hate either. Many say "I am proud I am of the majority race in America, I am favored over all groups". Many don't say it out loud, but they believe it. There is a RU-vid video documentary called "whitewashed" its about being white in America. It is interesting and white people talk about what its like to be white in America in an honest dialog.

Hi Emmanuel, love this video. My 2 cents, for whatever they're worth as a white person... There's a phrase that's usually applied to disability and/or mental illness that I recently feel we need to apply to racism as well. "It's not your fault, but it is your responsibility." It's not my fault systemic racism and the inherent bias that Obama was talking about exist and are part of the world I grew up in. But it is my responsibility to be receptive to being corrected when I fall into those traps and to do better going forward. I think a big part of ending racism would be to get all of us (white people) to understand that when someone calls us on our ignorance they aren't always saying it's our fault. (As Obama mentioned.... sometimes there is that assumption, and I agree that we need to watch out for that as well.) The fact is you can't change people's minds with anger and shame. Only love can create love. Only compassion can create compassion. If we can get past this attack mode somehow (both people attacking before teaching AND people assuming those trying to teach are attacking) we will get much farther in ending racism.

As humans we have a finite amount of daily energy. We get drained and tired. We generally get tired sooner from engaging in things that drain our energy, and conversely, we also get energized/replenished by some things. We need to find a way to make all of these uncomfortable encounters in life into positive, energizing experiences so we will all keep coming back to it instead of consistently avoiding them. Beautiful to hear a modern day answer to a Neanderthal notion of racism. We’ve come along way as country but we have so much more work to do. Biotin the next 40-50 years from now this won’t be such a hot topic in this beautiful nation.

Obama is great, but I have two points of contention. 1. He defines racism as "fear of those who are not like us". That is not racism. Racism is the thought that particular race is superior to another. Fear of the other is xenophobia. 2. Obama continues to say that if we only hang out and listen to people that talk, act, joke, etc like us then we will never come together. This again supports that Obama is talking about xenophobia, and not racism. Humans are naturally xenophobic its a survival instinct older than primates. There is no overcoming it. The way to get around it is you spend time with one another and slowly you start listening to the same music, talking, joking, etc with each other.

I agree that history is important. We should not erase it but learn from it. I am an older white that was around when Martin Luther King was doing his none violent sermons. I remember the whites only restaurants and theaters. It was wrong. I had my first time experience with integration in the Marine Corps. I found out that we were brothers and had each others back. I have a suggestion for people afraid of each others race. Next time you pass a person of another race look them in the eye and say how are you. My experience has been big smiles.

It's very difficult to be part of the discussion of racism as a white person who is not a racist when some people are saying white people are racist and thus calling you a racist by default because of the color of your skin. Instead of using terms as "white folks" and saying they do this thing or that thing, call those individuals out by their name, not their entire race of billion(s) of people.

I agree a 99% "...the statement about being open by giving people the benefit of the doubt..." yes, I do believe that being open by hearing ones thoughts, opinions, and or what thoughts are based on with some facts. Thus is truly a part in understanding to get along with each other people with diversity. However, it is dangerous for people to give other people 'the benefit of the doubt'. Giving people the benefit of the doubt usually is a sign of warning for people to realize it is not to their interest or benefit. Referring to what was written in the book, The Life code by Dr. Phil. Maybe(?) give a person 'A Reasonable Doubt' while we are being open to understand them vice-versa them understanding us too. This applies to all subjects of diversity not just racism.

I’m a young teen. I’m also white cis straight boy, my parents are pretty liberal and have raised me to be aware of racism sexism and other hate. I have a question, anybody can answer I just really would like to know. I struggle with white guilt especially as I am a man(sexism towards men is common but not as prevalent as towards women or others) white, cis and straight so I am the stereotypical ignorant person. I sometimes hate myself for being so, non diverse because it makes me feel embarrassed when talking about political views or just being around my more diverse friends. Is white guilt good, should I feel this, or should I work more on recognizing my privileges but not feeling bad about my lack of diversity as a person? Thanks for reading I’d love it if you reply have a great day

White guilt, it is tough feeling white guilt. Christian guilt is replaced by white guilt. The world does suck, yep, not much can be done about it. Guilt seems to exist to draw people closer or push them apart. Guilt is crippling and crushing, yep just like Christianity, the problem might just get bigger and continue into the future, and constantly change and evolve. We may have to carry the guilt into the grave, it just means we are human, it helps regulate our humanity keeps us human.

I loved the comment from DeadGrape. I am a white female, with a white son and daughter now in their 20's. We too, have felt embarrassed by our white unearned privilege, and there is a certain amount of guilt that comes with that as we watch our black and brown communities continue to suffer at the hands of white supremacy culture. Like the stages of grief, we can move past the guilt and rage. I agree with Obama, education is key. We are opening ourselves up to voices of color in media, literature, history etc. We are using our unearned white privilege to speak out and show up as allies for diversity, equity and inclusion. It sounds like you are on this journey too. Bring some friends, expect to make some friends.

"White Privilege, my a**". That is the title of a video on RU-vid by The Officer Tantum. No-nonsense black ex-police officer. Look it up. And don't get bogged down with this white guilt nonsense, it is a means of others trying to control you. Stay away from such people because they have a victim mentality: everything is always someone else's fault, never their own. It's always others that must change, not them. They will never lift a finger to make their own lives better.
@Tethloach1
@Tethloach1 3 года назад
@@wagondragon The victim mindset is always shoved down peoples throats, it is everywhere. Also most people generally never want to change, those so called victims do need to change and adapt to the situation and escape victim hood. Being a victim gives people an excuse to give up and feel good about defeatism, and rely on those who benefit from their weakness, those who need victims to make a living. Keeping people weak helps them reliant on others, and those that are relied on feel good about self importance. It is quite common but comes in a variety of forms.

How to cure racism? Making sure children understand their histories, and that we all are family- one family- the human family. We are all part of the human race, and like chocolate candies we come in all colors and flavors. In all of history, people, all people have attached to their "group" which is fine, but appreciate other groups as we all bring something different/ a different flavor to the foods on the table. - [ ] Being black in America ( a introspective in 2020 ) Imagine being born in the 80s as a child of the black panther movement , the LA riots and racial upheavals now in 2020 is it all that different I think not : go into the void with me if u will. As a child of the 80s (1984) I was born during the Rodney king riots in Los Angeles bcoz of the killing of an u armed black male where racial fights were happening between Koreans and blacks (one of my aunts on my moms side happens to be Korean) bcoz of a misunderstanding of culture. Now what does that have to do with me well...A LOT When I was in elementary school ( late 90s ) bcoz of my skin tone ( wasnt really black wasn’t really white : which you think would’ve benefitted me but when u have only black , white and Latino kids in ur school it’s not the best of situations, I wasn’t really afforded a race : I was labeled black not only that but I’m autistic en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asperger_syndrome which basically means all my auditorial sense work at once and I can’t do a damn thing about it. That got me labeled in school as the “slow kid “ ( I was academically ahead but socially behind ) which means I didn’t have friends until MUCH LATER IN SCHOOL. In middle school ( around 1996-2002) I was in a learning development program which actually stunted my growth luckily for me though my school matriculated in 2003 ( I hated a vast majority of my schoolmates who were “disappointed “ in the decision but had they not treated me like 💩 then maybe I wouldn’t have turned on them but they did so it was no skin on my nose”. In starting my country music fandom : man I feel like a woman by shania Twain ) at the same time “Freak On a Leash” by Korn came out ( I was in 8th grade bout to go into my freshman year of high school ) then in my graduating year (2004 ) the song “Broken” by the band Seether came out form the movie “Punisher “ and that was even more important to me bcoz I started thriving socially due to the fact that unlike my previous school ( which up until 2003 was a continuation school from kindergarten to high school switching that year to just having elementary and middle school ) there wasn’t a clique system it was more like a algorithm that supported each other. I see that this requires explanation, since it was a performing arts high school the so called “geeks “ were the most popular people in my school so much so that i ended up staying at the school an extra year to help a friend of mine who was a year behind me ( I wasn’t gonna graduate with people who I didn’t like nor respected plus the guy that needed my help was also socially inept. In middle school I started playing piano ( which labeled me as a nerd but at the high school I graduated from I was not only a black nerd but as it would turn out also a black goth ( I hung out with the kids who listened to rock groups like My chemical romance and smashing pumpkins rather than Tupac and notorious BIG. My boyfriend who I had met through a special needs program ( who looked like DOOGIE HOUSER MD ) and dated for 2 years was the Jewish version of Steve urkel and I asked him to prom our senior year ( I was going to be a member of the class of 2003 until I MADE RGW DECISION TO STAY AND HELP HIM OUT How connected was my new ( and eventually graduating ) class , well at the urging and behest of a football player who I had been friends with , he asked me to participate in the school talent show , well knowing my introverted personality I looked at him all kinds of sideways but agreed bcoz maybe it would be a step in a forward direction (plus the other football players on the varsity team urged me to do it but of course I had the condition they had to be there ( little did I know they’d ACTUALLY SHOW UP bcoz you know people: if u ask them to show up they gonna be wishy-washy at best) so I do the performance ( it was a poem about my grandmother on my mom side who had passed away after a church camp incident that had me stay all but a day bcoz the girls in my cabin were ruthless bcoz I was more reserved than them and they couldn’t take it all to only the next day get lauded and embarrass them for embarrassing me. In 2010 bcoz of my sports background ( I never played a sport but my dad played college football) I became a bull riding fan lemme be ABUNDANTLY CLEAR , IF U CANT GET HIT OR GRAVITY DOESNT BRING U TO THE GROUND IT AINT A SPORT ITS A RECREATION ( ie: golf and tennis ) (CHEERLEADERS ARE ATHLETES) in 2011 I became a NASCAR (NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF STOCK CAR AUTO RACING ) fan after watching the Daytona 500 : in 2016 becoming a hockey fan as well as a rugby fan and in 2018 becoming a MMA fan : all of the aforementioned would get ur black card taken away bcoz the stereotypical black woman doesn’t like sports and would much more prefer shopping...well I’m 5”7 and got giraffe legs so the best I can do is go shopping at plus size stores and as for musical taste I’d rather listen to country music any day. Furthermore and this has nothing but everything to do with all of this in 2010 my sister ( who’s Nubian black, I’m more peanut butter ) graduated high school and gets accepted to Georgetown university but bcoz of a racist incident involving my father ended up going to and graduating from Loyola Marymount in California with a graphic design degree. All of that to say that in 2020 even in a pandemic I’m thankful for the scars it gave me bcoz it taught me how to stand on my own.

At what point do we realize we don't have a time machine, history won't fix today's problems, and we have to get on with our lives understanding and valuing the progress that has been made?

The problem is that there is a vast majority of the population that continues to hold on to the history, as it was engrained in them by their previous teachers and generations. Why do you think people in the south are more inherently (and unbeknownstly) racist? Because that's what they grew up around. It's not entirely their fault unless they recognize and continue to do it.

I really over all liked what Mr.Obama said. I also see some lack of understanding how our human minds work in his reply to Mr. Acho. I believe a decent starting place would be the book Being Wrong by Susan Schultz. We can and do believe simple answers to complicated thinking and beliefs, its called being cognitive misers. Than there is our cultural, traditional beliefs which can have issues. America has and will always have issues with the other. We all are the other to the other.
