Barack Obama 'humbled' by visit to Nelson Mandela's Robben Island jail

President Obama said he and his family were 'deeply humbled' by their visit to the Robben Island jail where Nelson Mandela was kept for 18 years. Obama stood in silence for some moments in the cell where Mandela -- who remains critically ill in hospital -- was held. The US president wrote in the guestbook: 'On behalf of our family, we're deeply humbled to stand where men of such courage faced down injustice and refused to yield'

I visited Robben Island in 1999 and found the tour a very interesting and inspiring experience. Whatever the time of year, there were strong currents making it just about escape-proof and the sea around the island is freezing

The true hero is Winnie Mandela. She stood between the ANC and oblivion. Without her, Tata would have died in jail. He was the Julius Malema of the day, a rabble within the ANC Youth League. Granted he formed uMkhonto we Sizwe, but it was not a grand army. He was banged up before they made any serious forays into enemy territory. It was uMam Winnie who flew the flag for the Mandela name resulting in his elevation from rabble rouser to serious Revolutionary finally to President.

On 31 January 1985 State President P W Botha offered Nelson Mandela, conditional release from the prison sentence he had been serving since the conclusion of the Rivonia Trial in 1964. The condition of his release is that he renounced violence, and violent protest, as a means to bring about change in South Africa. Your hero refused.

Nelson Mandela was in Robben Island for 18 years and then transferred out of the island for the remainder of the years some of which were house arrest. Another fun fact he is not the longest staying political prisoner in Robben Island. Take it from people such as myself whose lived experience is in South Africa.
