If only she could have been our first Black and Female president what a different country we would be. Spoke the flat out truth no matter if it was to a white or black audience. Sad to watch then and now.... this is what we need to find a way back to... all of us, together.... toward the same goal of becoming colored blind. All will give up somethings... won't work any other way... all must admit they have made mistakes and be honest about all facts, even the ones that hurt.. or should not have been, two weeks ago or two centuries ago..Separate but equal never works.... all white immigrant groups goal was to have their culture blend into the American culture they admired.... all faced issues, Irish, German, Japanese, Blacks, Women, Hispanics, Latins...all. We can continue on and have an ideal we scream about ...... pointing to privileges or handouts or what is "owed" or how unfair it is... but none of that helps get to the goal... Depends what is most important to you.. for your grand kids.... It is our choice... We can each demand the 100% we feel we are due... and face others doing the same thing... feeling just as entitled or we can change... it is our choice. Doing the same thing, listening to the same talking heads who never admit the other side might have a point or at least stop talking long enough to really try and understanding how things appear to be from where the other side sits. A different way to try and solve a problem today makes you a racist or a hater or a grandma killer.... no, just another way. Learning takes place there... Is it right? Would you rather be right and keep things as they are or transform everyone? The dream was to see no color.... not to just have every thing the same... big difference in mindset. Wonder if it is possible.
I too was convinced that one day Barbara Jordan was going to be our President and I was going to whatever was necessary to make it so. It was unfortunate that health issues made it not possible. So unfortunate.
Had she lived, Congresswoman Jordan would've been the first African-American and woman Chief Executive. What the world lost with her untimely death cannot be measured. 😢
She made me understand in my twenties that American American are Smerican and deserved a place at the White House. One of my role model as an African American woman. I remember that caveating speech.
Great speaker. I remember watching her on television for the Democratic National Convention. I was 22 years old. This was my second Presidential election. This brings back memories.
Very beloved Rep. Barbara Jordan. She Loved the D party, She Loved the people/humanity. And above all she Loved the country. I lived in Houston for 3 mouths with friends, and for Rep. Barbara Jordan, now Rep.Sheila Lee, President Bush 41 and Secretary Jim Baker, I also consider myself from/and love Houston TX.
I am a guest in your country from the United Kingdom and I read almost every day the criticisms leveled at Barack Obama which I think are unfair, shortsighted and unjustified. i have little doubt that had Republicans been in power for the past years the same arguments would have been leveled at them. we are living through a global financial crisis not just an American one. Governments of every political persuasion throughout the world are unpopular just now. there are no quick fixes to this mess
How quickly the Democratic Party went from championing labor to becoming right-wingers on economics. Here's hoping that they'll come home and become the party of the working class once again.
Nah, Jordan wasn't a globalist sellout nor a commie, she was a classical liberal, she would hate what has happened to the left. Like when she says why not change from a reputation of tax and spend, to a reputation of investment and growth... hahah, Barbara Jordan would have no place in this modern abomination sadly, they would hate her values and solutions.
It's going to take more than one term to resolve these problems, some say it may even take a generation before we see a return to a strong vibrant economy. I don't say Obama has got it all right, no President ever does but I think, on balance, he's done about as well as anyone in his position could possibly do. reflect on the car industry in this country and how it has grown in strength due to Obama's policies..policies that Governor Romney voted against as I understand it. The car workers
Barbara Jordan was such an eloquent person!! She reminds me of a wonderful professor I had when I attended community college. Her name was Dr. Annjennette (sp) McFarlin and she is one of my favorite teachers I ever had during my college years. And as I was walking with my graduation cortege (entourage) ready to graduate from Grossmont College with its Class of 1999, Dr. McFarlin was waving at ME from her place amongst the department chairs and whatnot. Yet, I DO see much of Dr. McFarlin in Mrs. Jordan and DEFINITELY vice versa!!! :) :) :)
Tomorrow night we have to watch 10 Presidential candidates out of 24 on a tv cable network try and reach the audience where they may get a total of 3 minutes to speak. Rediculous. Better to allow one candidate speak fon30 minutes why they should be President then take the top 3 and have a serious debate about the issues that face us. I would vote for a women like Barbara Jordan today.
Cleaira Walker-sykes when I was a kid in the late 80's my junior high class visited the LBJ library for a field trip, me and some friends were acting like junior high kids and we got separated from the group. When we realized we got separated we took off running to find them and while running out a door we nearly ran down this lady in a wheel chair and the man who was pushing her, since I was the last one out the door I got stuck holding the door, I told her, "excuse me ma'am" , and took off running. I had no idea who she was. About thirty minutes later this lady was talking to our teacher and I remember thinking, " oh crap"! She's ratting us out. A few minutes later the teachers had us surround her while she sat in her wheelchair, and she gave this impromptu speech on the importance of education. I don't really remember the speech (God knows I wish I could) but I remember being spellbound cause she spoke so clearly and with such authority. When she was through we all applauded and she was wheeled away. Now that I'm in my forties, I wish she was still around. She was a real American, and a true voice in the wilderness. And this is a republican talking. God bless Barbara Jordan.
These are difficult days and there are more ahead...our country only saw economic daylight under Clinton, I believe because he reduced the military. What is happening now did not begin 4 years ago...it's been a horror since the 1970's unfortunately mistakes have been made. I can say I voted twice for Clinton, I also voted twice for Bush. I am sorry about that. As a voter and citizen, I have to continue to DO what I can not just for me but for our legacy. I want to be proud of us in the future.
currently employed in that industry would now be unemployed were it not for Obama's policies. Rather than being reliant on the State they are contributing to it through their taxes and also contributing to the economy by being able to spend hard earned money. This is just one example and I recognise we are all living in tough times. There are no quick fixes here and anyone who thinks there are quick fixes is being foolish.
It is fair to criticize a President whose policies have deepened and lengthened an economic recession. For the U.S. to have almost 4 years of an unemployment rate that has not gone below 8% is unprecedented in recent history. This, combined with nonchalant attitude about our debt; which is currently above $16 TRILLION and counting, his consistent demonization of those in America who create jobs, and his downright unAmerican health care bill, is more than enough reason to criticize Obama.
He was a drug dealer, Dixicrat, and Reaganomics was the word used as his tax breaks for the wealthy and rich. Those Corporations and wealthy stole money and Bush pardon them.
If only more of the people who voted for Barack Obama in 2008 had asked Rep. Jordan's simple question: "Change...from what....to what?", perhaps we could have avoided the last 3.5 years of failure on almost every front.
I second that same sentiment as well with those who voted for Trump. Maybe we could have avoided the last 2 years Of being dominated by a predominantly white male legislative law making body within the GOP. Was there a shortage of ethnicities and capable talent within the GOP. I don’t think there is but was was said and what was actually done and carried out are two different points in position. The simple question for America is From what to what?
People in these comments don't seem to understand how things change over time. Context changes. Time moves forward. Things that seemed radical then are normal now. You can't say that what someone said in 1976 or 1992 is the same stance they would have now with the current contexts. Instead, look at the core values that they have. Jordan was clearly for civil equality, especially as a black, queer (closeted) woman. She was for diversity, respect, and gender/race equity. She was against bigotry and racism and xenophobia. She was for people coming together for the greater good. None of that is against the ideals of the Left today.
Do you just not read? Like I said, after she died, her partner, the woman she loved and lived with for 20 years, came out and told the world their truth. Not lies. Truth. And fuck anyone who wants to shame people for being gay after death when that shaming is why they couldn't live their truth in life. Hell this fact is so well known, it's even in her wiki article.
Who cares if she was... She was a Smart, Beautiful, loving, caring woman who fought for what's right not wrong. She was a voice not only for black people but all women of color to be treated fair. in America. I remembered as a kid growing up, she spoke of this in her speech. America was dominated in the job force by white men.
