I needed some Barbecue tongs for our grill at home. So I thought I would share the process I used for this particular set. Forged from 1/2" round mild steel.
Here is a link to the grinder I am using in this video.

I love watching you work. I literally could watch you scotch bright and talk haha. You have taught me a tremendous amount from watching and listening. I like that you give other options to whatever it is your doing. New and old videos, I enjoy all of them. Not a single one I’ve seen that I did not learn something from it. Thank you for all your time and effort

I recall when I was a child (many years ago) my grandmother had a set of tongs that were bigger, but made in same fashion for adding coal or wood to the cooking stove. Thanks for the memories John, nice tongs.

Deflection of a spring under a given load is proportional to the third power of length. English translation: making the spring longer means it will take less effort to close, not more. Excellent project! The file-work really sets it off and makes it elegant!

those are such a simple beautiful set of BarbeQ tongs John. I really do love your approach to smithing. Not everything has to be overly ornamental to be beautiful. thank you again john. i think i may actually try these.

I use an old socket with a 1/2" square bar (or 3/4" or 3/8" square bar if that is the old socket set you have) in the leg vise. The tongs look great.

To match the same angle left and right handed I often mark (lines) both angles on top of the anvil so I only need to hold my piece in line with those marks. And measuring and drawing those lines gives me something to do while the work heats up. Works very well for me.

Great, great useful idea making tongs for the q. (nit picking) The balance point is too far back, and i would have liked to see them a little more open along the length. Your hand is almost closed when your holding them. (personal preference only) You did excellent work and inspired me to find a new pair... the ones I have now aren't quite right lol Thanks again, Blacksmith

Count down to Christmas DVD Boxset would make a great gift in and of itself, then you would have instructions on how to make all this very cool and useful item's to give or for yourself. I don't know how process works but you already have the video shot.

Nice work John! I've been hooked on your channel for just a short time now. You've brought back a lot of memories from my high school days when I was in metal shop doing the blacksmith gig, Wrought iron tables, hinges, hooks etc. I'm now sixty and, with nothing better to do and am thinking about getting back in to it. Not for money but just the enjoyment turning metal in to something. After going through engineering and designing tooling for the aircraft industry I gave up on metal and went to building houses and furniture. I do a lot of camping and was wondering, While you are on BBQ Tongs, if you would do a video on making a coffee pot tipper? Thanks for the great videos and possibly bringing back an old blacksmith!
@BlackBearForge
@BlackBearForge 5 лет назад
I have never made a coffee pot tipper. But i do have one made by another smith many years ago. I will see if I can find it for inspiration.

I've heard you say that a warm anvil is a happy anvil Could the anvil be warmed with a weed burner or is that even neccessary

I personally think the weed burner would be over kill. But it would likely get the job done

John ..do you think I could use some of my rebar to make bqu tongs.
@BlackBearForge
@BlackBearForge 5 лет назад
You could. I prefer not to use rebar for any forge work, but if thats what you have, use it.
@MarkATrombley
@MarkATrombley 5 лет назад
I have seen you struggle with the vise several times. Why haven't you made V shaped covers that slip over the jaws of the vise? A set of small and large vertical Vs and some Vs at a 45 would seem an obvious improvement.
@BlackBearForge
@BlackBearForge 5 лет назад
It looks much worse on video, plus I tend to use other tools in my own work. But try not to always bring out more unique tools for basic projects.

John it wasn't me after all. It's the tempering that was wrong. In such a thin piece such as mine was always to brittle and broke. I still think it needs to be made of spring steel. Here's the link of a competitor of your's ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I6_uJ9AmBh4.html&feature=push-u-sub&attr_tag=lh1IXYYJKPaIhBNt%3A6 he makes it and uses it. A young kid I think. but he gets it done with some good results what in the heck am I doing wrong I have tried and tried and died trying this and even given blood over it. lol
