Barbel Fishing : How to Make Pellet Hookbaits (2020)
These hair-rig friendly barbel pellet hookbaits are one of my favourite barbel baits. Made from ground pellets, they closely match the feed, but can be made to any size and shape you want, with a brilliant texture that is not only soft, but tough, so they will stay on the hair for several hours. Whatever barbel fishing tactics you are using these baits are a must-have in my bait bag. Look out for some great barbel fishing tips and advice on barbel tactics too.
This is one of those baits that I always have with me when barbel angling. They are also really useful for carp fishing and bream fishing too.
I hope you enjoy this film. Thanks for watching!

I hope you enjoy this video and find it useful. It's a hookbait that I have been using for a number of years. Yes, it takes a little bit of effort to make, but the barbel (and chub) like it. You can add whatever flavours and additives that you like, but most of the time I use it just as it comes. When the water is a bit colder it can be worth adding a couple of drops of Black Pepper oil which barbel really love. Let me know what you think, hopefully I will have some more underwater barbel footage this summer.r

Thanks for this tip Paul! Just made some hookbaits in a mix of sizes using ground up 8mm halibuts, and a few krill and shrimp boilies + an egg, they smell really good! the 10 quid Lidl Silvercrest coffee grinder is great for the money if anyone is looking for a cheap option for one. Hope to catch on the bait at the weekend. cheers :-)

I'm a bit confused. You seem to have taken pellets, blitzed them, kneaded them into a paste and then made pellets out of them. Why?
@chrisgeorge4304

Thank you I will use them on the river ribble you ever fished it Paul. Its a top river
@drpaulgarner
@drpaulgarner 4 года назад
Hi Chris, yes mate, though not for a long time. I lived in the Lake District for three years back in the late '90's and fished the Ribble quite a bit. Back then the barbel were fairly numerous, but a double was a rarity. The chub fishing was amazing though, loads of big fish. What's it like these days?
@chrisgeorge4304
@chrisgeorge4304 4 года назад
Yes mate it's changed a lot there is a lot of double figure barbel now. You will defo like it now chub go up to7 pound now. In the winter when it goes dark fish bread on hook with cast up stream leave a loop in your line and you can have 20 chub in a session. Awesome mate give it a try when you are in area. Keep your videos coming mate I will share them with all my friends. Tight lines Chris

How long can they be kept Paul? Can they be kept in a freezer? Another great vid, thanks.

Dear Paul! If i have some leftover baits, how should i store them without spoilage. Thanks for sharing.
@drpaulgarner
@drpaulgarner 3 года назад
Hi Norbert, best is to store them in the freezer, but you can also cover them in some oil (cooking oil is OK, or cover them in salt, these methods should stop any mould from growing. Best wishes! Paul

Hi mate, don't get the wrong end of the stick this isn't criticism I love watching your vids and I find them very helpful. I dont quite understand what you are achieving here, could you please explain? You have bought pellets, ground them up, then made pellets....out of pellets? What am I missing?
@drpaulgarner
@drpaulgarner 3 года назад
Hi mate, thanks for the comment. Sorry, if I didn’t make the benefits clear. I mainly started doing this years ago because I wanted a bait that was easy to hair rig - you can just push a boilie needle through them. OK, you can get pre-drilled pellets, but I find they break down quickly for my liking. In fact my hookbaits will last for hours, which is handy at times. You can also make them any size (including really small), incorporate any additives that you like, change the shape and even add some cork dust, or pop-up mix to make a wafted version. So there’s a few advantages over a straight pellet. Tight lines! Paul

If you place it in the microwave then you have pop up pellets that you can add to a chod rig right
@drpaulgarner
@drpaulgarner 4 года назад
Yes mate, that normally works - can’t say I’ve tried it with these, but all it’s really doing is reducing the moisture content. I’d take a bit more time forming the baits (the cut ends are a bit ragged) just to stop too much water getting in. I’ve done well on wafters for barbel in the last few years too. Tight lines! Paul

Hi Paul, another good video as always. I am struggling Though with making them around 35mm in size as they just split when you squeeze them. I’ve done them at 2min all the way upto 3min 30, what am I not doing wrong please ?
