We're back on the river and we're barbel fishing using simple tactics on small rivers in the new season for 2023! I have a few barbel fishing tips that enable you to switch methods up really quickly with a minimum amount of tackle to catch these stunning fish. We lands plenty of stunning chub too as we roam around the banks with just a rod, net and a mat!

Very similar to the River Lea Some good tips regarding the float change utilising used floats. Minimal tackle makes for easier roaming Glad you answered the question on Barbel welfare /return as something you would include in future New Anglers might not know how to return a Barbel safely

Definitely. They’re often targeted in warm weather and they fight like crazy. They do need to revive and be treated with care 👏👏👏

I miss fishing the Lea, especially up at the old mill meadow, great chub in the 80’s and 90’s.

Another great session Nick well done. Im off out tomorrow with a box of worms a light carp feeder rod doing a bit of link ledgering for whatever comes along. You been out on the yak yet?

Them blobs are cool idea are they designed for these smaller little rivers or can they be used on wider stretches of river?

They’re self weighted and can be used on all waters. Particularly good in shallow water as they have no stem and require no shot 👍👍👍

Great stuff, Nick. Love how nimble those tactical changes are and definitely something I’ll be trying. Fishing for barbel is brilliant. I wonder with more people having a go whether it would be worthwhile including some basic fish welfare (resting, etc) in a future vid? Tight lines.

Man that rivers tiny, I am used to 2 1/4 chucking 4oz feeders half a mile for Barbel lol.

Nick, some great fish there - cracking Barbel and Chub. Would like to see you fish somewhere far more pressurised, maybe The Conkers? - there are some exceptional Chub there (6lb-7lb fish) but hard to catch... There are also some exceptional Perch which I know you like...
