So the director is on record saying that the filming at Venice Beach somewhat put Margot Robbie at unease. Not because of being leered at, mind you, but because everyone *ONLY* wanted to talk to Ryan. Dudes would walk up to Ryan, fist bump him, and continue on their way. Almost no one paid attention to Margot. Lmao, the stuff the movie presented was absolutely dumb.

I have mixed feelings about the movie. I love barbieland and i think the first act was the highlight of the film, but the trailers relied on it so much I felt like I had already experienced the bulk of it. The movie also introduces new characters and elements at such a fast pace i feel like it forgets about its lead character near the end of its second act. We only really get one scene where barbie truly begins to contemplate what life is outside of barbieland, so the end of her arc, while apropriate and expected, doesn't necessarily feel earned. And the film does get preachy, which isnt inherently a bad thing, as long as the audience doesnt feel preached to, which is a bit hard when the characters seem to constantly use buzzwords to vocalize their situation. Enjoyed the film but not as much as I expected to.

@poetrait941
@poetrait941 Год назад
I personally loved the film. I thought the patriarchy bits were a bit on-the-nose at times but nonetheless very interesting. Like how Ken thought he would be able to land any job just because he is a man and so is supposed to be privileged, or how Barbie is sexualised as a woman in the real world. I thought it poked fun at both patriarchy and matriarchy, as the objectifying and disregarding of Kens can be said to mirror both the treatment of women in our own society (there was a great monologue about the paradoxical expectations placed on women), but also the treatment of men as it isn't okay to take away men's humanity either, and doing so often causes them to push back harder because they feel attacked, creating a cycle of us misunderstanding and fighting eachother. In the beginning the Kens are essentially disregarded which makes them turn to the patriarchy of the real world for a sense of power, but even the matriarchy of the first act is synthetic and soulless where women are all expected to be doctors, physicists etc. which is better than telling them they can't be those things, but by the end they get at how you shouldn't need to be those things to have value as a human; you're allowed to just be 'ordinary Barbie'. I think the film has done an excellent job at showing that you can be a 'stereotypical' feminine woman and that does not make you frivolous or unintelligent, but also that you don't need to (literally) put yourself in a box like people do with different 'aesthetics' nowadays: you can have multiple titles and roles, or you can reject them. I also liked how Ken was uncouraged to find who he is too by the end, because even if women wanted to solve men's problems, it's not something they can do, men have to be the change they want to see. You know, for a movie about dolls, I thought it was a beautiful commentary on what it means to be human and I damn near cried. This film was ART. My only gripe with the film is that a lot of of the jokes were in the trailers so they weren't as funny upon hearing them the second time around, but that's fine I still thoroughly enjoyed it in all of its stylised, pink glory. Watched Oppenheimer, then Barbie and I adore both.
@lb8489
@lb8489 Год назад
I think the anti patriarchy message had to be that on the nose bc as you can see, theres a lot of people that still dont get the message. Look what happened with movies that criticize toxic masculinity like fight club and american psycho.. a lot of men think this movie is a misandrist movie, but it isnt whatsoever. So tbh, i think we’ve come to a point where its like “OK you guys STILL dont get it, ig we have to be as CLEAR as possible that the patriarchy SUCKS for everyone, (while more for women, it also does for men but ykyk)?” And it STILL hasnt worked 🥲
@poetrait941
@poetrait941 Год назад
@@lb8489 I agree, and I also think the matriarchy bits can be misconstrued as a 'screw men' kind of thing, when actually its criticising hating on men to uplift women as much as it is hating on women to uplift men. I feel like some people on either side just entirely missed the point. I'm a man that saw it with my brothers and we certainly never found it to be 'man-hating'.
@joshua5946
@joshua5946 Год назад
@@lb8489 I think the message delivery just did not hit because the Kens were nothing but idiots the WHOLE movie. There was not a single moment of genuine genius among the whole movie. Anything "smart" they did was counteracted with some dude bro haha quickly after. Also the ending speech was lowk meh. Maybe if it was after an emotional rant by BlondKen about how they feel useless, unworthy, stupid, and overall didn't feel good before but they found *something* in the new system they had so they stuck with it. Maybe a Ken or two could've been honest about how they don't want to be forced to act a certain way, and say they'd rather do x or y without it being a joke. Make the Kens a character, not a caricature. If the Kens being "themselves" were idiots, then the "Be ken" message doesn't really ring an emotional chord. On a scale of: Bottom Mid, Below Mid, True Mid, Above Mid, and Peak Mid, I would put Barbie in between a High Below Mid or a Low True Mid.

The detail in the set, clothing, the perfectly toned colour palette. Margo Robbie is perfectly cast. She looks like Barbie but she has the talent to portray the depth of the character and not lose any of it behind the costumes and fantasy. Same for Ryan Gosling, absolutely perfect casting. i was waiting to hear your review on this as a casual watcher. as a black woman, i loved the first act, the production 100%, the comedy, acting (margot and ryan stood out to me the most) and gloria's monologue because i've felt like i've related to what she was saying at points and i was glad both the barbies and the kens equally found their own path, but i can't help but feel the execution of some of its message was lost on me, particularly towards the end. idk if it was trying to encapsulate into barbie, a figure that for some people, represented perfection, that it was okay for women to simply be normal, or that barbie, as a concept was as out of touch with reality and needed to connect with women more. i thought they would show more than tell with its feminist message, but maybe the direct messaging of the patriarchy was intentional with both its ironic/social-commentary comedy or its just me from seeing it today for the first time. either way, i liked it but it didn't live up to most of my expections as to what it would deliver; it kind of reminds me of what i thought "don't worry darling" would be versus what it was, except barbie is 100% better than that movie, but i just expected more. edit: from reading more analyses of the movie, it makes a bit more sense to me now. it was an overall fun movie, and i'm glad i could have time to laugh and think, but i think somethings just fell a bit flat like i said above (execution of its message etc.) went from 7/10 to 8.5/10

I think the issue here is that the movie is going to be watched by all manners of people when the target audience itself is actually very niche in the sense that the messaging and core “feel” of the film will only really be understood by anyone whose ever played with a Barbie doll when they were a kid. As someone who did, I actually really enjoyed the movie and the ultimate message it was conveying about Barbie truly being able to do anything. Plus, I think the whole matriarchy vs patriarchy thing was super smart when you consider that most young girls would imagine their dolls in matriarchies anyway. 😅

@DaddyZhong.
@DaddyZhong. Год назад
@@coffiebreak2236 I thought that too initially when mayor Barbie said the Kens would still be secondary in Barbie land because the real world is a patriarchy but honestly, I don’t really mind? Clearly it was supposed to be humorous after the Kens realised that their entire existences don’t have to hinge on Barbie. I think the bigger takeaway was that patriarchy negatively affects both men and women and in that sense, this movie shows that well. The matriarchy itself was less about the message and more about replicating what a little girl would envisage her Barbie dolls in. “Should’ve made a new system”. Isn’t that what they did? Mayor Barbie literally tells the CEO of Mattel that they don’t want to go back to the old system and both Stereotypical Barbie and the Kens pursue their own independent paths.

ikr i was thinking that too. Yet even still, it's hard to deny that Ryan Gosling as Ken was SUPER DUPER charismatic the entire time. I was laughing every time he was on screen.

Agreed,I went into the film completely blinded without knowing about any of the controversy surrounding the film. I actually liked it ! Like he said in the video it's a beautiful film. I enjoyed the colorfulness,the props, and the cinematography that the movie offers. What I got out the film. It felt like watching a music video at time. Well I think what the movie is trying to say is to be yourself and don't rely on other people to become great. And what I also got out the film is that the barbie doll is perfect and barbie doesn't want to be barbie anymore because she realizes she's not perfect which explains the ending montage of all the imperfect daughters and mothers. I did not think this movie was sexist or attacking men and I didn't get offended at all.i actually did like it when ken was crying, dancing, and laughing I think the film actually shows men have emotion too. That's what I got out the film

I’ve been saying this since his performance in The Nice Guys but Ryan Gosling is one of the greatest comedic actors of our generation and Ken really is the role he was born to play because it combines his dream boy dramatic background with his comedic genius. He absolutely deserves AT LEAST a best actor nom.

The walls in my theater must have been pretty thin, because I could feel and hear the impact of every explosion from the Oppenheimer movie next door. The movie was perfect for me. Yea the message was kinda preachy, especially when the mother spent like 3 minutes talking about how every women's life sucks, but they did make some good points and the costumes and comedy made up for it. The only thing I actually hated about it was the daughter. She was a major brat and she never apologized to her mom for being a jerk

I think the emotional beats to make me cry flew me over, but man what a funny, incredibly poignant movie. I'm sure a lot of reviews from men are going to see *that scene* and think they're being talked down to or something, but it's such a great message and incredibly heartwarming to see a movie like this in 2023. It truly does feel like a blast from the past.

@@epicsponge7934I kinda agree it was a bit like shoved in our face in the movie and the movie only shows the good parts of being a man but none of the bad bits, like crime, gangs, war, suicide etc. etc, which I understand because this movie was meant to be light-hearted and was targeted towards women.
@oligotide7257
@oligotide7257 Год назад
@@user-zy7jx2rn1j I disagree that it only showed the good parts of being a man. The whole "Kendom" was supposed to show how toxic masculinity negatively affects men as well. From the beginning, the narrator stated that it would only be a good day if Ken was acknowledged by Barbie, and at the end it drove home the point about how a lot of modern men feel that external factors (like having a girlfriend) determine their self worth.
@mewgiah8057

This sounds like a really insufferable movie from people completely out of touch. The average person does not believe Barbie to be a scurge on society. Its a children's toy. Millions of girls who have played with her for decades, had fun playing with a doll. All this "she set unrealistic beauty standards" and "pushed that only white woman are important" narrative is exhausting, and not the experience most people have taken away from the toy. So the movie trying to make this into a super serious thing not only overshoots who the core audience should be for this, but it also is making drama out of nothing. This reminds me of the stuffy critics recently pushing that Mario saving Peach "in another castle" - poisoned the minds of a generation of men into thinking women were an object or reward. Except, most people just loved Mario games - and didn't think anything more to it then that. I mean you play a freakin mushroom-eating Plumber jumping on turtles. It really isn't that deep. People are tired of being lectured and told they should be concerned about something, even if they don't actually feel its concerning. I also love that the movie spends a huge portion with Ken learning what it's like to be a "real man". I'm sure Hollywood is completely in touch with how most modern men are these days, and has a good grasp on that. It will be really relatable and represent a large section of the gender.

I agree. I think that, in general, we have too much political stimulation from the media. I am a conservative, and I've not seen the movie, so I am quite confused to hear the different reviews on YT. More conservative reviewers seem to have missed the plot at some parts, while it's possible that the movie did not critique Barbie enough, too? Does that sound like a correct summary of the issues people take up with it?

This movie was a dissappointment. It did not keep in line with traditional Barbie movie feel. If you've watched every Barbie movie tv show with your kids you'll get what i mean. This was NOT Barbie and Ken, it was two completely different personalities. It was confusing, way too political with adult Themes. My young kids thought it was wierd! Do not recommend if your looking for the real Barbie.

I thought the movie handled the social commentary in the best way possible by using comedy. I assume you saw the movie but there are spoilers in this comment. To me, there wasn't a bad guy. There were just some severely misguided characters like Ken. Ken thought the only way he can be of any value is if Barbie loves him. When Barbie rejected him, he thought that if he implemented patriarchy, he would finally be seen, and respected. In the end, Barbie helped Ken realize that he is valuable not because of his girlfriend or status, but because he is Ken. Ken had an amazing arc in this movie. Stereotypical Barbie's arc is a little more complicated because she ends up in an existential crisis when initially all she wanted to do was fix her body.

It does poke fun at allll the viewpoints as a commentary about the doll’s cultural significance. The only people I’ve seen getting upset about it all have one thing in common. They can dish it out, but they can’t handle anyone questioning their beliefs or pointing out problems with it.
