Barbie Reproduction Doll 1978: Fashion Photo P.J. 📸✨ Review & Lookbook! 

These 70s and 80s reproduction dolls make me so nostalgic for my childhood Barbies. PJ also is in such good hands with stylist mini Arjen!

Picture this…..It’s 1979ish in the USA and 10 year old Janet’s Planet is perusing the ever famous Toys R Us toy store. Naturally, I’m waltzing down the aisle of all the bright pink boxes that seem to go up to the ceiling and drooling over all the superstar dolls! Good times!!!!!!!!!!!!🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷 I think PJ stands for Priscilla Josephine or Priscilla Jo!!!

My sister used to have P.J.! She had asked my parents why there were full stops between the letters and they explained to her that it’s her initials. And since then my sister called her Petra Johnson 😊

I have the originals of Fashion Photo P.J., Christie and Barbie, and all three of those original dolls have rather sparsely rooted hair compared to what we're used to nowadays. It's also not super long, if you pull the curl straight, the hair barely reaches the doll's waist. The original Fashion Photo P.J. doll was the first time that the P.J. character was offered as a brunette, but she was also brunette in 1984 with Sweet Roses P.J. Two other P.J. dolls had a mix of blonde and brunette hair, 1983 Dream Date P.J. and 1984 Sun Gold Malibu P.J. The Whitney character came several years after the last appearance of P.J. in 1984, the first was 1987 Jewel Secrets Whitney. The following year we got Perfume Pretty Whitney and Nurse Whitney, and in 1989 we got Style Magic Whitney (who really needs to be reproduced, she is ICONIC). I don't have this repro doll (yet) but I do have several examples of the original doll, and from what I can tell the bodysuit, pants, and slim skirt all look like they're made from textiles that are similar to the originals, it's only the sheer tricot overskirt that looks a bit off to me. The original skirt had a somewhat matte sheen to the fabric, whereas this repro skirt looks a bit shiny. The colors also look a bit darker than the original, but I can't really tell without having the repro in hand. If you've never had a vintage original Fashion Photo doll, the bodies are super weird and kind of hard to work with. The doll was designed to be used with the Fashion Photo posing stand, and that mechanism works more or less as advertised, but it's really kind of jerky and not very graceful. They must have modified the mechanism for the TV commercial, or did some other kind of trickery to stabilize the doll on the base. The key feature of the doll's body construction is that the hip joint is connected inside to the neck joint, so that when the hips move, the head moves. This is similar to the 1971 Walk Lively Barbie feature, and is probably a similar internal mechanism. I actually had Fashion Photo Barbie as a child and I always thought she was funny because if you tried to pose her in a seated position, her head would spin around like Linda Blair in _The Exorcist._ 😆

I had P.J.! She was my first "older" Barbie.

When I first saw P.J., she gave me the beauty queen aura. I am very glad that she is put into the superstar gown and has a crown on her head. She looks like a Miss Universe from the 70s!

Love the bathing suit makeover especially the bracelet and anklet. She just needs more eye makeup 😅

I have this repro and I love her, my only peeve is the sheer skirt is so stiff and doesn’t lay as nicely as the original did. The sheer material on the original is super soft.

I never had a P.J. and, if I can't get an original, I will get this one! 😊

I have a PJ from 1978, she was in rough condition when I got her. Her neck peg was broken,her hair was dirty and stunk. But I wasn’t going to complain, I got her with about 30 other Vintage Barbie’s with clothes for $20 including a Stacey doll from 1965 and a Francie doll 1966 both patent pending in beautiful condition. I was shocked.

I think she should officially named Penelope Jeane (or Jane), this suits her so much!

I've been waiting years for a Fashion Photo PJ repro, I never thought Mattel would actually do it. She is beautiful but mine came with wonky eyes. Not too thrilled about that. She absolutely reminds me of Whitney from the 80s, except Whitney always had blue eyes I believe. PJ having brown eyes makes her a bit more unique (you rarely saw brown eyes on caucasian Barbies back in the day).

Peggy Jean or PollyJo, ,are two ideas I had for P.J. I bought the original doll in 1978. I adored her, I was a Junior in H.S, that is the 11th grade in USA. I was not supposed to still 'play with ' dolls. But I was working at a job, and bought her anyway: I mean if I was a boy and collected trains, no one would have said a word! I took her out of the box, that camera was terrible and the stand did not work very long. I did enjoy the variety of outfits and looks you could get with the extra clothing. Mattel used to do that very thing while /Ruth was still head of Mattel. They had a whole section of clothing you could buy as separate pieces, and use to mix and match to other clothes. The doll is still beautiful and a valued part of my vast collection. I enjoy your show, and admire many of your redone hairstyles. I don't always like your new choice of outfits, but we all have varied tastes. Thank you for your podcast, if that is what this is called.

OMG I wish this doll would not have been so limited edition 😭. I didn't get her and I thought she would be on Amazon but she was only sold on the Mattel website. The doll of my childhood dreams!! 😫💔. I loved PJ as kid in the 1980s. Any Barbie with a Stefie facemold was (and is) always my favorite classic face. As for my take on her initials; so my aunt's name is Pamela, so i would think of it as Pamela Jane, or Pamela Jo (because my middle name is Jo). But Penelope is such a cute name in general. We used to watch the old Hanna Barbara cartoon the Misadventures of Penelope Pitstop, so when someone says the name Penelope, that is who i think of.

This is one of my favorite Barbies of all time. I was lucky enough to get the original about 20 years ago at a great price. It looks like they got the clothes and jewelry pretty close to the original. I went to the site to buy her and they were already sold out sadly. Hoping I can get her somehow. And I absolutely hate those straddle doll stands.

I got two of her as well. I also have two of the reproduction Super Star Christie. And I have gotten two of the Barbie the Movie dolls.

The "possible pictures" actually came with the original. You put them into the back of the camera. Then once you took the picture, you turned a wheel on the back of the camera to have the "picture" come out of the camera.

❤ I was planning on skipping this one. Tho I love the Steffi face, I don't like the hairdo. She just didn't seem old enough to warrant a repro. However, I didn't know about the additional fashions fixing the hair didn't seem problematic and looks fantastic. So now I guess I will need to get one.

Oh my goodness I have a blonde sort of version of her! She has pink clothes and a stand that moves so she can pose. She also has the photos and a camera. Of course I opened the box and botched all the stuff so I could use the stuff I wanted 😬🫠. I’m still a little girl trapped in a 46 y old body. Arjen I’d love to hear your thoughts on Fashion Fever dolls, I’m starting to think about getting one for my daughter but they are so expensive 😭 The fashion packs are amazing but also spendy.
