Barbie came out in 1959. I was 9 years old. I already had a Ginny and a Jill doll. My father was amused at Barbie's exaggerated proportions. My mother was horrified. I begged for a Barbie. All my friends had one. Instead, I got a Baby Marie/Ginnette clone with a wardrobe. This went on, year after year until the Christmas I was headed for my 17th birthday. OK, I was still 16. I heard my father tell my mother to just get me the d*mned Barbie. My mother got a boot box from our Endicott Johnson's shoe store and filled it with an entire handmade wardrobe. A leopard corduroy coat and hat, short sets, capris, party dresses, ball gowns, day dresses, hats, gloves, peignoirs, baby doll pj's, hats handbags...name it, it was there. Eventually, that Barbie/wardrobe and the Baby Marie/wardrobe got passed on to two younger cousins. I still have Ginny and Jill. My birthday gift to me this year was a Made-to-Move Barbie, and I also bought on eBay the repro patterns my mother bought all those decades ago. I'm going to replicate that trousseau for me and my three grandgirls. Then I'm going to outfit three Kens...one for me and one for each of my grandsons. If I could figure out how to make the weaponry, I'd give them each a US Navy GI Joe/Ken. I'm a US Navy veteran and, yes, I have a US Navy Barbie from 2005 (a gift from my daughter who was then in the Navy herself, and a US Navy Ken from the 1960s I got in bits and pieces on eBay. Happy 65th birthday, Barbie...from one of your oldest fans.
That's such a sweet story. My Mom was/is also a huge fan and she was your age when Barbie came out. She had plenty of dolls, but as the oldest girl, she soon had to relinquish them to her sisters, who didn't treat them with the same care. Lol My sisters and I also became fans (and had our own dolls/playsets), including the first McDonald's restaurant, Dr. Barbie, a motorhome, Perfume Pretty and Totally Hair. 😊
Secret Hearts Barbie was my first ever Barbie. I remember coming home from preschool and playing with her and a pink convertible. Even though she’s not the center of my doll collecting anymore, I will always treasure her for my fondest childhood memories💖
I miss the articulated fashionistas bodies too. I got just one but it's the best. What I miss too is the Fashion Fever line. The outfits really represented that fashion era and the doll faces and makeups were stunning. Let's hope Barbie quality come back again :_D
I was waiting for you to discuss the Life at the dreamhouse series which was for me, the best animated barbie because of the great portrayal of their personality. With dolls base on it
I was also so incredibly inspired and motivated by my Barbie dolls to not only sew clothes for my dolls but also to make clothes for myself. I had a Barbie head that I would create hairstyles and apply makeup looks too.
I had every Barbie doll that came out between 1966 and 1982. Sadly when they were in storage they were stolen. But I remember them fondly and love seeing them again in your video ❤️
This was really thorough, yet curated! Was kinda expecting to see My Scene Barbie, which was for me the time in my life when I had a similar lifestyle. Sort of post-Generation Girl. My grandma had an amazing Barbie collection, including some dolls from the early 60s. She made beautiful clothes for them, too!
I grew up with the nineties Barbies and my sister and I had almost all of the ones you showed here, including the green millennium one. We weren't rich though, to this day I don't know how my parents could afford it. I remember taking my Barbies everywhere, such fond memories!
Hello - The best Top Model is the Summer with the Steffie mold. An interesting fact is that the Teresa Top Model is the only Teresa ever to feature the Aphrodite sculpt. The accessories are amazing. Thank you.
I was born in 69, and the first Barbies I remember playing with are the Busy Hands, Deluxe Quick Curl, Dramatic Living, and Talking Barbie (with black hair) that I called Barbie Benton. I remember being horrified when I was given the Superstar Barbie - that was not Barbie! I thought she looked so goofy and I hated her. I still don't care for that face. The rubbery articulation may have looked good, but it was such a pain to dress! We had to keep baby powder in our toy box just to get shoes or pants on them, and they always broke.
I have kissing Barbie! Her clothes were lost, and not sure I know where her stamp is, not that it would still work, but she's one of my girls staying forever. Oh Crystal Barbie, I am so lucky I have her. She has a rip in her gown & rubber bands rotted so hair fell down but IDC. Also have great shape. I don't know how I totally missed that 1985 astronaut Barbie. When I was little I wanted to be an astronaut ballerina haha. I wish there were ore repros. I am not going to spend my life savings on any collectables. I only collect modern dolls but I am glad that last year I picked up the repro ponytail (brunette) and solo spotlight, not expensive at all. In 1992 I was busy being a goth witch horse girl and started college and was not interested in Barbie again until the late 90s, but would not let the ones I still had go. Do you know of the StarDoll line? They were out around 2011, loved their funky hair & clothes & they had some great accessory packs.
The first woman in space was, indeed, a Russian cosmonaut. Her name was Valentina Tereshkova. She married a fellow astronaut and they had a daughter--the first child to be born of two parents who had traveled in space.
It’s so bittersweet because back when Barbie monopolized the fashion doll world she had to keep up, they had to innovate. Now they do bare minimum and give the world throw away dolls.
@@brinac1.6.scaledolls the thing with Mattel now is it's trying to save the cost of production plus the inflation gets crazy high . Your $20 doll 10 yrs ago is like $50 now.. this means that if we want the same quality like from 10 or 15 yrs ago. Then we have to pay 50 or 60 dollars for a fashionista doll... Mattel wouldn't do that because its less profit margin and people will buy less.. they would rather decrease the production cost than. jack up the retail price.. if you want quality dolls, try checking Integrity toys dolls .. crazy quality but crazy price. mattel knows that the market of barbie is within the less costly range. They dont want to be like integrity toys who markets more on the mature buyers.
@@brinac1.6.scaledolls inflation is to blame. Mattel would rather decrease the production cost (resulting to lower quality) than increase the price of the doll.. i dont think many people would buy a basic fashionista doll (with the same quality from ten years ago) for $50..
I remember the Peaches N Cream Barbie. I wanted her so badly, but sadly, I only had 2 Barbies, 1 Ken doll, and 1 Skipper when I was growing up. My parents had other plans for their money. And of course, now I have a small collection.
Happy birthday Barbie! We share a birth year! I got my first Barbie when I was 6. My mom wasn't thrilled about her. She couldn't find a Ken, so we got Alan instead and he's still my fave!
My first Barbie was Malibu Barbie, when I was about 4, bought to keep me occupied on a cross country car trip. Loved her. Also had Superstar Barbie, who fought the Empire as a Rebel, alongside my 12" Star Wars figures. She was as tough as they come. Loved her too.
@@HouseOfHuli When I first had internet, I came across this old Barbie ad and recognized her. Then looked it up, and sure enough, it was "Marsha, Marsha, Marsha."
Ah! A time when I would enjoy my Bug Juice as a kid playing with my dolls. Now I get to play with my dolls with a nice 🍻 beer and watch you do the history of Barbies. Nostalgia! I love it! OMG! I can remember most of those dolls. Playing with them!
"Bug juice"?? When I was in 4-H, we often had outings/picnics with the boys' 4-H and the Grange. There was ALWAYS "bug juice"...orange and pineapple juices mixed with either 7-up or ginger ale. It was called "bug juice" because, no matter how carefully we kept it covered, a bug or two always managed to find its way into the punch bowl. Good times!!
@@onemercilessming1342 haha 😂 thanks for sharing. Bug Juice was a drink that I remember was popular when I was a kid. It came in flavors like Fruit Punch, Berry Raspberry, Outrageous Orange and Lemon Lime. A highlight of my Barbie childhood memories.
@@missboozehound Was it a regional item? Honestly, I never heard of it until you wrote of it, other than the concoction we had at Grange and 4-H. Our house was on the unproductive one-acre of my grandparents' farm. We were never allowed to have food or drinks near our dolls (I had Ginny and Jill; my younger sister had Ginger and Jan; my baby sister had Barbies as she was born at the time Barbie was introduced) and farm areas are loaded with ants, flies, wasps, bees, spiders, yellow jackets, and other annoying critters that can destroy toys.
Hello fellow doll lover, I have two sleeping beauty dolls and the switch in the back sets the eyes to open or close. Then if you raise or lower there right arm they will open or close....😊
The 2000s barbie was me in 2010 to 2012 barbie life in the Dream house and then 2015 came I still liked barbie but said Characters like Raquelle and Ryan were gone I still like barbie but my golden days of barbie is Magical
I had a Malibu Barbie. She belonged to my older sister. I also had the first mermaid Barbie. I wish I still had her. The Bob Mackey Barbies were some of the most stunning dolls! I remember the first time I saw one. It was Empress Barbie and I almost cried at how gorgeous she was. My youngest had a bunch of Generation girl and my Scene dolls.
Thank you Joey for uploading today! You have put a smile on my face after a hard day with my father in the hospital. He had 2 mini strokes last Saturday. Thankfully he's going into rehab tomorrow morning.
Cultural ICON. Superstar. A whole mood. An entire concept built on diversity, inspiration, imagination and fashion. Barbie it's a lifestyle. Barbie is the QUEEN 💖💝💗💓💘
I was born in 2002 and loved that whole era though i had plenty of dolls from the 90s passed down by my older sister. My favourite doll was the glam barbie from the og fashionistas line
The everflex waist was a major feature of the doll produced by Jakks Pacific, Inc at the same time. It’s funny that the Fashionista line got the new body types year after the new Jem and the Holograms comic book came out and they had new body types.
Man, we say it again and again: As good as the diversity in the line has become, the fun factor is totally gone, when u see the fun, creative dolls from the 80s and 90s and then the bland „realistic people“-dolls with zero fashion sense nowadays. It’s so sad to see. :-)
I don’t understand american parents keeps on complaining about the toys and most of them can’t even teach a good moral to their kids and keeps on blaming to the toys about their child’s behaviour.
18:27 "And Barbie became a fairy for the first time in 1994." Since this is the year I was born, I take this information as a sign of my obsession with fairies. 😂🧚♀️✨️
Great video. Happy Birthday Barbie! You've been an inspiration to me my whole life. I can be anything! First Barbie was the 70s Ballarina with the white tutu and gold crown. Still have her.❤
I got the adult sized reproduction of the red coat your bubble cut barbie is wearing for xmas, and it's EVERYTHING. My mom and aunt had the original coat and early Barbies in the 60s, and I got to play with them in the 90s. The red coat was my fave - getting to own it in my size as a 32 year old is a DREAM.
You forgot to include that during the direct-to-DVD era, Top Model Barbie line from 2007-2008, is the first and ONLY playline to use the model muse body . Also, The Fashionista line from 2009-2023 really revolutionize the doll market, especially in the aspect of articulation Great video ❤
Your BEST video so far. You mentioned not many people didn’t watch this, strange?! This is one that will be marked as legendary. Keep up the awesome work. I love watching g your videos. Especially when you highlight vintage Barbie. This video taught me so much about late 80’s through 2000’s. Thank you!
The Living Barbie doll had flat feet as well. ( I just learned recently ) I was a child of the 80's and 90's so those are my favourite version of Barbie.
The earlier dark-toned dolls were Barbie’s friends and given names other than Barbie. The 1980 doll was the first dark-toned doll to be called Barbie too. It changed the idea that the star (Barbie) had to be white.
It’s been a heck of a journey. I’m fifty, and there aren’t that many brands (certainly not toys) that are around from my childhood. I cringe at the quality decline, especially in play line, but I’m glad she’s still there, and I do still find some dolls I like each year.
Aww a blast from the past. As a long time barbie collector (I’m 55) I can’t even tell you what the stores felt like when the Bratz battle hit and myscene came out. The collector shock was a thing!! ❤
Is there way to contact you privately? I have found 2 vintage Barbie dolls, not sure about them or information on them. Need to show you photos. To see if you can help.
I remember the first time I saw the Barbie Extra dolls in the store. It was the first time since the mid 90's that I'd felt excitement about a non-holiday release. They had so much STYLE which is what I want from my fashion dolls ykwim? I didn't feel any urge to collect dolls in yoga leggings, no shade, it's just not what I'm into. Barbie has so so so much fashion potential and I like to think kids and adults alike would appreciate a return to that glam ott style of the 80's/90's. When I go to the stores I want to like the new Barbies so much but it's just not there for me :( Hoping for a return to glam soon! (or at least fashion-focus)
I really wanted the JEM dolls as a kid, I was a Tween around the time, but my Dad would have freaked out, kind of secretly watched the cartoons too [With 'i'm waiting for the show after' as a ready excuse]... it was a diff time back then and my Dad was very Macho@@BeautyInsideABox
