Oh, wow, I used to have this Barbie when I was a kid. I LOVED her so much!!! I remember cutting out the bottom of the skirt/purse, so I could see her feet. And used to wear the blue ruffles as a hair band. Oh, oh, and I remember that the short silver dress was actually cut like a swim suit. Man, all the memories... And don't even get me started on the dolls from the little catalogues. I remember playing with so many of those, because my friends had them. This video was like a time travel for me.
My favorite Barbie line - up there with the Rockers! Jewels Secret Whitney is my favorite doll and I have been trying to find one. Had to get rid of her because of a mold incident. 😢 there were lots of extra accessories for these girls too. Thanks for bringing back some awesome memories!!!!!
I started collecting Barbie around the time of Jewel Secrets: These dolls also had their own clothing line and the separate accessory jewelry paks with tiaras, necklaces, bracelets and barrettes were great quality! They came in a variety of "jewels": emerald, ruby, ect. This was a great series and still love it all these years later. Thanks for featuring Jay !
Thanks for reviewing these! This was my only Ken when I was little, and I haven't seen a commercial for him. I agree with you that his outfit and its "features" are so cool! This exact outfit is probably pretty much back in style for the avant garde male; Mattel could just make more. Loved the pierced ears and "ring hole" in those Barbies, too, though I experienced that through a line other than Jewel Secrets! It was probably my 1990 Holiday Barbie with the HUGE, **PINK** dress!! That dress was everything; I still have it somewhere. 💖 Thanks again!
Me too!!!! Today some ppl says Mattel improved becoming diverse but the quality now sucks and in the past it was already diverse with things like PJ, Whitney, Christie, Teresa, Midge, Kira etc, plus they even used to do the black version for each barbie.
I had the black one as a child, then a couple of years back I re-bought her because I gave my original one away. I also bought the white Ken because my friend had him when I was a child and she'd bring him over when we'd play Barbies, and it just takes me back to have them both. I loved the hair on the black Barbie, the colors in the hair were a beautiful mix and it was so soft.
Yeah, black barbies in the 80's were so amazing! So gorgeous! Today's black barbies are ugly (as well as white ones). But why u had white Ken? There was the black one too.
I had Jewel Secrets Whitney, but I got her loose without her original clothes. It's so hard to find a cheaper Jewel Secrets dolls and their clothes.I love their bright shiny outfits, so 80's. I love the qualities of these 80's, 90's and early 2000's Barbies. They are so much better than Barbies today with their cheap qualities and less accessories they have now. That each dolls almost cost $20. Even the knock off Barbies from the flea markets are having better qualities than the real Barbies.
The end of cool barbies in my opinion started at the end of the 90's when Mattel quit doing L shaped arms and twist abd turn waist, but faces still pretty, ofc not as the same level of 80's and early 90's ones.
This was my favorite Barbie doll! I remember playing with this one the most but even back than she was so delicate, it didn't take long for her and his outfits to start to fall apart and crumble. I hope the creators do take a step back by time I have children or I'll just start buying them the barbies I grew up with because the kind they have now is nothing compared to what they use to have. It's like they aren't even trying anymore. Where is the magical world of Barbie where everything transforms? Those was the days....
I found an African American version of both of these dolls at a flea market! The boxes were slightly damaged and the windows were major yellowed, but the dolls were still in good shape. I'll have to go back for them next pay day... :D
Thanx for the nice review! I have the Jewel Secrets Whitney and I can't say how much I love her omg!!! Her face it's so sweet and I lover her gorgeous brunnette long hair! Plus her outfit it's so stunning and classy! This Ken it's amazing, I'd like to add him to my collection! And ur right, barbies in the 80's were so gorgeous and her clothings and accessories were incredibles! I wish too Mattel go back to that amazing quality!!! I saw the barbies of my niece and are terribles! Ugly gigantic faces, no bendable legs and poorly made clothings. My mom never bought me Jewel Secrets barbie, one of my friend had it, while instead I had (and still have) the Jewels from this line inside small drawers and Rocker barbie, who has been my bd gift from my pal friend when I was a kid and I love her a lot!
Ken comes with a jewel bracelet thats meant for him to give to barbie....and it fits her well...i keep my couple on display all hugged up lol they are so cute...i now only collect vintage but i still really love this 80's couple
So i have this set as well but i must warn you it is wise to un box your barbie because being in that purse closed up insidevthe closed box for years you will find mold spots all up and down her precious legs...when i saw that i was devastated. I suggest filling a bowl with water and CLR place her in it for a few days...the moldy green spots will go away
I had Barbie when I was younger. I have Whitney, when I was younger I had JS Barbie and Whitney, as an Older kid,, but dolls get damaged or lost is a move. I got Whitney. I tell you, JSW is never listed as a lower price Doll, in fact if there is a JSW at a rare low price, it"'she gone within a few weeks, maybe less, used or mint Condition, she is very seldom a low price, Ken is the cheapest in the JS collection, all Whitney dolls re thec Same in the area of popularity, low pieces make big sales. Jay. I know you know I have Whitney. I'm just Telling others about her. Great reviews.
I just bought this set on EBay. This was my first and only new Barbie and i would get my sister’s hand me down barbies. I still have the original, but she is falling apart.
I was thinking the same thing! His lighting is not good. He must be using a ceiling fluorescent light... Well be much better with a clip on desk light that he can aim at his subject
+finerfeelings78 I know and it's so annoying!! The quality looked totally different on the actual camera and it wasn't until I uploaded the video to edit that I noticed just how crappy the video quality was. I also think the black background makes it SO much worse which irritates me because I adore these dolls and they need much better lighting.
+iamshantheman1 this video and the last one had this same cruddy lighting. The black background didn't help out at all...lesson learned...my camera quality was showing me something much different which irritates me.
+iamshantheman1 yes I know!! The lighting was awful in this video and the last one. The lighting looked so different on camera than it did when I started editing. I'm quite disappointed in it myself. I also think that the black background was a terrible idea. Lol
Jay Squared yes! Black background is a no no!.. We live we learn... Looking forward to your next review (with better lighting!) lol.. Or how about a re-do of this review (you owe it to these two throwback Barbie and Ken! Lol
