@@BondsApartment thanks for review, looks superb. Took my teenagers to see Skyfall last weekend in cinema here in the UK as it was the first Bond film they watched on blu-ray and thoroughly enjoyed as well as myself.
I have this jacket in Large. I am 5' 8", 195 lbs, 42 chest, 36 waist. With a Pendleton wool sweater and a henley undershirt it is a bit snug buttoned up but not overly so. I often wear it to my son's soccer matches on cool fall days where it might rain a bit. I absolutely love it. I would not tailor the sleeves - they look good on you.
I purchased the Dept B in Navy version of this jacket about 4-5 years ago. I LOVE this jacket and I can see why so many are so passionate about Barbour and specifically, this jacket b/c it really is a special piece. That said, I would definitely get the sleeves taken in. This is the one and only modification I had done to mine with my tailor and they did a fantastic job. I typically wear XS to S in my clothing and the jacket (size Small) fits like a glove now. The sleeves fit the rest of the jacket (i.e. the bagginess is gone). If you look at how Daniel Craig wore the jacket in Skyfall, the entire jacket had been specially tailored for him, including the sleeves.
Thanks so much for the review. Just ordered my large after owning a medium last year and returning it for being too tight. This was such a helpful video and inspired me to reorder the next size up to have the sleeves tailored!
This jacket truly has one of the weirdest fit and it's also hard to find an optimal weather to wear it because of its plastic lining. I remember my main concern with shortening the sleeves is that this jacket has a patch at the back of each arm and tailoring would mean you lose the fabrics between the leather cuff and that patch. It is a small nitpick but some people are okay with it. I think your jacket fits great now and don't need further adjustment!
This jacket is one of a kind! What are your measurements, btw? That would be super helpful to compare while shopping for the jacket. I'm 6'2 44/46L (US) and I honestly have no idea which size to choose. L or XL 😰
I worked at an Orivs retail store for 5 years. They sell a wide selection of Barbours. They also will send your jacket back to England to get re-waxed and or tailored. What most people do not know is that you can absolutely trick your jacket out for a very reasonable price. I had leather elbow patches added and leather trim put on all of the cuff seams…an area that tends to fray.
The other thing people should know before they buy a Barbour is that only a couple jackets are made in England and those come in traditional sizes…40..42..44..etc. if the jacket your are looking at comes in large, extra large…etc, it’s made in Bangladesh or some such place. These jackets are extremely difficult to get the right fit and I would not buy one as the cottons and waxing is not up to the English made coats.
I'm happy with my Barbour Ashby in olive made in Moldova purchased at Orvis with hood , it's perfect I feel safe and cozy in it I love wearing it with a turtleneck it's so comfortable and practical the best with hood and shipping nearly
Good video Luke. Your sleeves are fine, it’s meant for multiple layers. I come from the Irish countryside of mountains and bogs, basically like Glencoe, and have had a few Barbours over the years and love them. I would say, this side of the Atlantic, you do only see wax jackets in the countryside. Townies don’t wear them, but they’re missing out!
Great reaction for the pin! I never had mine altered, had mine about 10 years now. I don’t think it’s worth altering any further. Good to have the option of more layers in the cold months. I also got a navy quilted version.
@@BondsApartment I'd keep the arms as they are. Looks good. I got mine about a year back and have the same problem with the arm length. Not a deal breaker but a wee bit frustrating. Can I ask roughly how much it cost to get the cuffs adjusted? Big bucks? Loved the vid. Good stuff.
I ordered a Large and the overall fit was spot on around the shoulders and arm length, overall length of the jacket, right until i tried to button up the chest area, didn't come close to fitting, it was shy a good 3 inches, i measure about 45 possibly 46 chest at the time, I had to send it back for an XL. I was worried I would be swamped in waxed fabric but the fit was surprisingly good, i'm big chested but still quite slender on shoulder length, so when I get XL, I feel like a 12 year old with dads blazer, that American footballer shoulder padding but again, the fit was spot on, extremely happy with the XL. The only problem were the long arm length, for which i'm happy enough to fold in a few inches.
That was a really good video. I have wanted this jacket since first I saw Skyfall. Had the Lutz jacket for a while but purchased the featured jacket this week. A fantastic design, great fit, sleeve's perhaps a tad long. Greetings from Scotland. Just back from a sortie to Glen Etive and the now famous Aston Martin lay-by. Great Channel!
Thanks for sharing! This looks amazing! I am torn between this model, now listed as the Beacon Sport on Barbour’s U.S. page, and the waxed Lutz. Could you share the episode number where you discuss the jacket further? Cheers!
I got a Beacon jacket shipped to me from the UK last year, but it didn’t fit very well. I’m 5'9", with a 38" chest and a 32" waist. I ordered a medium, but the arms were too long and the overall look was too baggy. I missed the return window, so I was considering either ordering a small and reselling the medium or getting it tailored. Both options would cost me money and effort, so I thought, "Screw it, it’s made of cotton, let me try shrinking it." I soaked it in the bathtub, spun it in the washer, and then put it in the dryer on low heat. And it worked! I measured the center back before and after-it shrank about an inch. I didn’t measure the arms, but they definitely fit better now. Now I just need to rewax this thing, and it’ll be perfect.
I had the Commander, but I didn't like the fit. Too tight in chest, too long in the sleeves. Very difficult to align the shoulder seams to your natural shoulders. The Bedale is much more forgiving in terms of sizing. It has Raglan sleeves and a much looser chest, without any alterations needed. Edit: I finished watching the video, and it actually fits very well on you. Congrats. (And Don't take in the sleeves!) I could go with a medium instead of small, but I don't want the hassle of altering the sleeves.
Looks great on you the way it is, I don't think you should tailor it anymore. The arms don't look very big. But that's just me. I have both Medium and Large, I think I'm going to have to tailor the large since the medium is a bit too fitted.... I could wear it with a t-shirt but If I wanted to wear it with the N Peal sweater and a Henley for SA, I'd be a little too tight.
Coming later to the video but enjoyable and helped me to purchase this type of jacket. Managed to get a Dept B version and some sleeve shortening will need to be done.
Looks great! I was lucky that mine fit quite well without any tailoring. Keep the arms as they are. It matches to the overall fit and is quite movie accurate I would say
@@BondsApartment I bought 2 barbour supa fission Medium and a large. I am returning the medium as it is really tight on me. Then i saw the beacon and wanted to get one but i a worried about sizing as everyone said it is really tight. I don’t wanna spend money again for return shipping. The chest size is really important as thats where it gets measurements off or run tight. What is your chest size and is it tight on you? My chest size is 43 and i hope large is not as tight. Thanks for help and response!
I really like the video; the thumbnail is incredible. However, the only advice i could give is to reduce the noise in the picture (Up the iso) if that means stopping down the aperture or adding another light source. (You could drop the framerate but keep it above double your shooting speed (50fps = 100 shutter speed min). If your using a iPhone or something you can’t adjust id try buying an extra light or film ear a window. Keep up the good work - Ripire :)
The other issue with these jackets is the Arm Breathability, I once owned the Dept B jacket and the Arm perspiration was insane, for some reason they added a membrane between the lining and the outer cotton (Which is not present on other Famous barbour styles ie Bedale/Beaufort which I can wear with no issue) I don't know if this is fixed in the commander jacket or later variants but IF this is a problem for you then this jacket WILL BE HORRIBLE to wear especially if you plan on doing any amount of walking. On the sizing, I have seen its the huskier gentlemen that have issues with it as this jacket fits like a slim blazer except that the arms are a bit long. Barbour also do a similar syle called the Lutz jacket which does not have the issues stated above and was a better everyday wear for me whilst retaining that waxed blazer look from the film. Good review as always luke
I just got mine back from Barbour... I had them remove the nylon lining in the sleeves and replace with cotton. It was about $100... worth every cent!! Was able to wear it all day in around 60-degree (F) temps w/o issues! Highly recommend. They did an unbelievable job too, cause I've also had the sleeves taken up by them as well.
Thanks man, I’m about the purchase mine right now but is Michael Stewart a legit retailer in the UK? Who is this retailer as they’re the only ones to have the Large in the Beacon
These jackets were and are still designed as utility garments not as fashion or couture. You need to go to a tailor if you seek made to measure. Don’t think wax jackets are for you
It just looks awkward. Now, you are very good looking guy… The great physique and everything. But this just looks like some weird hand-me-down or something. It’s just not sitting comfortably and effortlessly on your torso.
no don't bring in the arms.. this is a really problematic jacket .. I own two. one in black- one in olive. the black one is a medium.. the sleeves are perfect, but I cannot have that second scoop of ice cream. my large is perfect in the body, but the arms are for a basketball player. lots of reach.. I'm having it fixed.. but you'll need the extra fabric in the sleeves. JMHO...
So I own and wear this jacket in Great Britain. OMFG.... its unbearable to wear in reality its like a bloody sweat box on... there is a reason DC wore it in Scotland cos is soooo fucking cold !! If you live in LA don't bother buying it you will never wear it !!
Hi sorry to piss on your parade old bean but you have bought the totally wrong size hence the cuff tailoring job.. The jacket once you put it on I could see it was way to long . The thing to remember is its just a suit jacket design just in barbour wax that's all . If you love it that's fine but it just looks to me that your more like bonds smaller less cooler agent mate 005 (ordered one size larger jacket special agent) ...And mate just order the right size and stop wasting your money and time on your tailor ( by way the cuffs are not great in my opinion ) .If you watch this video back you can clearly see your not 100% happy 😉
Great jacket, man! Enjoy and stop change it! Please. It’s perfect and perfect fits you. Btw thank you for video - I’m going to purchase one so you just help me. ☺️
