Barbra explained and illustrated her Jewish religion to me. She did a great job with Yentl. I would like to dedicate this song to my father. Unfortunately, he died last year. But he is still with me. He can hear me. He can see me. And protects me. I know it. Papa, I can see a piece of sky. Thank you, Dad.
The final phrase and final note of this is one of the longest sustained notes in history. She holds it for 20 seconds, on an open vowel, which makes it that much harder.
It seemed as though she held it longer than that. She is a great singer. I like to see the scene from a star is born where she is singing the song named Evergreen. She was still singing and holding that note while Kris was kissing her.
I just watched this movie for the first time and said the same thing about her singing that last part. Iwas just watching a video of her 11 years after she made this movie where she did a medley of all these songs and she was able to hold the note for half as long, but I was so thankful. 😂 I can’t imagine how she was able to hold the note that long when she did this movie it astounds me! So brilliant!
The popular opinion here is many of you feel her voice is the best you will hear in your lifetime. I so agree and am glad so many share my thoughts on this.......Thank you Miss S for a lifetime of pure vocal joy! You are the gold standard.
Someone once described Streisand's voice as smooth as "mercury on dry ice". When Yentl was released, this scene was criticized as out of step with the rest of the film. For me, time has proven otherwise. I sat in the Ziegfield theatre in NYC 30 years ago when Yentl opened in very limited release and was amazed. Today, to me, this scene represents the very pinnacle of Streisand's greatest artistic achievement. Dreamers like Streisand achieve the unachievable by simply believing nothing is impossible. What an inspiration.
Wow...me too. NY'er here. I saw Yentl in the Ziegfeld. (My father died the year before, 1982, cancer. Sloan Kettering. So this song at the time was very emotional for me.) I just googled the Ziegfeld. It closed in 2016. :(((((((( It still was open when you posted. "Dreamers like Streisand achieve the unachievable by simply believing nothing is impossible." I agree!! I live in Europe now. One of my dreams. I hope you're well in 2020!! Nov. 17th.
This song totally changed my life. Because of this song in 1984, I turned myself from a dreamer to a doer. Not only I pursued my dreams, but I also moved to USA to find God. For past 14 years being here, luckily so many times I could reach God while in sleep, and I have enjoyed my life in NJ. I hope this year, those melodies and memories in my heart can be forged into good songs.I really like Barbra and the writer of "A piece of Sky " know that they have saved and changed several people's life
The greatest, most beautiful and miraculous singing voice ever. Barbra's voice is one of the natural wonders of the world. Pure joy listening to her sing.
One of the BEST endings to any film EVER. The lyrics to this are exquisite....and her delivery....wow. I get chills every single time. Not a single flaw. Where are the contemporary singers with this kind of talent?
There is only one other I know of Lara Fabian, check her out! She is Belgian, Italian. A delightful woman of 51 who is classy, talented, excellent singing technique and mutilingual! 🌸
I cannot express how completely i agree with you. Barbra’s voice (amd more generally, her body of work) inspired me to reconnect with my faith. What a gift!
@@Hihoweryew Psalm 147:1: Praise the Lord, For it is good to sing praises to our God; For it is pleasant, & praise is beautiful. Psalm 150:6: Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Psalm 149:1: Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song, And His praise in the assembly of saints. I could go on & on, but my point is this: Really read the Bible & stop trolling.
@@aishaa309 please read your Bible and stop striving with people . This song is not praise to God. It's blasphemy to day this song exalts the Lamb of God. Please repent of your blasphemy and stop criticizing those who call out your foolishness. You are a fool if you think this song exalts the Lord. Repent.
TAKE NOTE, POPULAR- SINGERS OF TODAY: this is what singing was meant to be and to be conveyed so beautifully.....not a flaw in her voice/singing and no autotuning......I dare any of you to hold a note as long and as perfect as Babs does.
Gilbert Martinez onew from shinee held a note for 40 seconds..but it wasn't as high as this cos he's a guy, or as stable cos Barbra Streisand is like the Queen of singing xD idk there are still good singers out there tbh but I do agree with you
▶▶Barbra lost her FATHER when she was a VERY YOUNG CHILD... No WONDER this song has SO MUCH MEANING for her... And why she delivers it SO EXQUISITELY and with SO MUCH EMOTION and POWER...❗🎉 ➕THANKYOU, Barbra for using your GOD-GIVEN GIFTS...❗😇
As I watch this movie, I think of my father Papa, my Tata from Poland I miss him so much ! Holocaust survivor from Poland Her father in this movie was like mine ! Having brain cancer I’ll be in heaven soon to be with him I’m not sad . But happy . I love this movie I can see arch it over and over . A Jewish father’s love to his daughter is so special . Like mine was . ♥️ Just love Barbara ! ❤ god gave her a amazing voice ! She sings like a angel
That note in the end has left our galaxy and will never rest. An amazing display of just timeless raw majestic talent. Thank you Barbara Striesand.....thank you.
@@hollyfountain8317 the note is about 20 seconds long. They didn’t include her in that YT video about who held the longest note while singing. Most of them weren’t belting a full force note like Barbra. Many didn’t hold it as long and some where singing throughout the note.
I once heard her voice described as SMOOTH AS LIQUID DIAMONDS ... THIS SONG IS ABSOLUTELY EXQUISITE and has always inspired me. Bless you and thank you Barbra Streisand xxx ....and she did this, my favourite scene from any of her films, on a Liverpool ferry in the North Sea! WOW!! Barbra was in my home town and I didn't even know at the time!!!
I've seen this movie at the theatre 9 times when I was 18 years old. It was 40 years ago. Her voice was magic. I've never heard anything by far comparable
Around this time in the eighties, many singers like Madonna, Janet Jackson, Tina Turner, Cyndi Lauper and Whitney Houston were being nominated for all kinds of awards, some deservedly so, but Streisand was not, for this album of Yentl. The reason was that the movie and the album, were not the hits they were expecting, so, Barbra was nominated for Guilty and lost to Bette Midler for The Rose, and won the Grammy for The Broadway Album, 2 clear successes that went to no 1, which shows, how ridiculous awards are, and had never rewarded those that truly deserved it!
Damn ! I live for Barbra. That last note was about 20 seconds long. Yet they had the nerve to exclude her in that dumb video about singers who held the longest notes.
I am Cristian from Romania. For me, Barbra is The Everest or The Sphynx of Music Ever! I Love Barbra! I Love Yentl ! I Love My Dead Father! God Bless You, Barbra! Thank You!
This film is a masterpiece, & deserved, multiple Oscar Nominations. ms Streisand was at her very finest. Music by Alan & Marilyn Bergman, arranged & orchestrated, by David Foster, the music is magnificent. if she did nothing else, this film would be a landmark in her career. ------------------MJL, 75 y/o
My beautiful JEWS , revealers of the future of our world , we love you and your 👑 KING AND MY SAVIOUR. JESUS CHRIST! GOD BLESS YOU FOREVER BARBARA, A WOMAN WITH LITTLE GIRL EYES! DAUGHTER OF ZION I AM!
She's fab, although I suspect her politics may have second guessing Benjamin N at the moment.. you need tone it down..that said, daughter of Zion you are go forth... I do suspect you are not going forth from the West Bank?? Let me know
Back in the day before I was up to 2 packs of smokes a day I could hold that final note!!!! NO OTHER artist in the world I know of or heard of, has held a note that Long!!!! Barbra is the QUEEN!!!!!!
I am a reluctant Barbra fan... this woman is AMAZING. She wrote, directed and produced this movie.. OH< and was the starring actor! and the message and artistry in here is AMAZING. You can't deny it. I have tried... WHAT an amazing individual. oh and this is not in a time when women were taken seriously yet... what a pioneer and STELLAR indiviual. THANK YOU, Barbra. :-)
No one else compares , never again will there be such an actress , singer , director , etc.... She's fantastic! Would love to just sit and have a tea with her
Such an emotive song that brings tears to my eyes whenever I play it I saw her with Topol on stage in London many years ago when everybody was talking about this fabulous new actress I fell in love with her then
Tears and goosebumps, Barbra, tears and goosebumps. This woman knows how to make someone think, reflect on life and really feel the meaning of songs. I have always loved Barbra and her music and will continue too !!!! :)
I played the song on the stereo in between the timing of my father's wake 4 years ago I came home by myself because I lost my mother and my brothers my father was the last and I just asked my friend s well if they wouldn't mind if I play this song ,I cried , devastating to lose my dad the last remaining member in my immediate family thank you for this great song Barbra Marilyn ,Alan Bergman and the Late Michel Legrand ❤️❤️❤️
She has a richness, depth to her voice. Others who sing her songs are very good but don’t deliver the fullness and soul of her songs. Hard to explain. She’s incredible and can’t be matched. People who sing her songs are brave or foolish or both . NO one can do them as good or better.
