Growing up in the city of Guayaquil, I have experienced the passion for football among kids, but also the struggles through their journey to become a profesional player. Due to lack of opportunity and wrong decision making, I have seen their dreams vanish. Through this project, I’ve decided to promote this common bond and interest in football between youngsters living in poverty throughout South America. Creating hope and awareness by letting them know that they are not alone in this journey, that there’s parallels stories throughout the continent and they can turn their hopes into a successful reality.
On my way to the Estadio Monumental, I met with Alejandro and Manuel, lead organizers of Barra Zona Norte, representing Barcelona Sporting Club.
How long have you been together? Since 2003 - The organized as a fan group? Yes - At least we attend every game locally and internationally only when we can afford it. Where do you locate in a match? North side called Enrique Pajarito Cantos. We painted that shield. And what are the names of the other sections? Thats the presidential Suite for the teams administrators. And that one there? Thats South side where Barra Sur Oscura is located. Those are the most passionate! Yes, we all are.
Founded on May 1, 1925, Barcelona is in the lead with most national titles won in Ecuador. They have also played 2 finals of Copa Libertadores, making them the most popular team in the country.
Here we are inside the Estadio Monumental, a historic place where the National team played as well. The Copa America was held here in 1993. That was the best position Ecuador ever had in a participation making in it to the 4th place.
Now we are in Palco. But when the stadium is full like in the 2012 final, I believe there was 90 thousand people. I didn’t know what to do, everyone was screaming, throwing beer, etc.
