Fusion reactors, should we ever succeed in creating one, would not fall into a chain reaction. Helium 3 would not cool the reaction, it would increase it. I'm nitpicking, I know. But it kills me the writers didn't come up with better reasons something is going to blow up.

@donaldbadowski290
@donaldbadowski290 2 года назад
@@3Rayfire, probably. But it would not do any better a job of cooling a reactor, fusion or fission, than He4. He3 is considered to be the best fuel for a fusion reactor, because it is so ready to absorb an additional neutron, become He4 and release energy in the process. So my guess is the writers heard about He3, and decided it would sound all futuristic and techy to those who don't know any better. Yes, I loved STNG, but I did catch things like this all the time.

@donaldbadowski290
@donaldbadowski290 2 года назад
@@MrJustyoutubing , no, it's the writers. They pick out something that sounds all techy, which they don't really understand, counting on the audience to know even less. Case in point. Geordi is trapped on a planet with an injured Romulan. Because of magnetic storms all over the planet, the sensors on the Enterprise can't find him to beam him up. Wesley Crusher comes up with the brilliant idea of sending down a probe to the surface that is emitting a "tachyon" beam, which Geordi's visor should be able to pick up. Geordi walks to the probe and can then be picked up. Brilliant, except that tachyons don't exist. They were a hypothetical particle that a scientist imagined, to explore what the world would look like on the other side of the speed of light. In our world, nothing can travel faster than light, but there is nothing stopping a particle already travelling faster than light from existing. OK, cleaver. But we can't detect any such thing even if such a world does exist. The writes thru it in this episode because it sounds cool.

@@donaldbadowski290 i get you, just putting out a possibility. Its equally likely youre right, if not more. Lesson in building a power plant: do not place reactors within meltdown / explosion distance from each other. Even at Chernobyl the reactors were housed in differant buildings so when #4 exploded the other 3 kept running

Man, Barclay gets so smart in this episode. I mean, he actually *runs* to where he needs to be when it's urgent instead of speed walking, such genius. Truly he is the Albert Einstein of the 24th century.
@Dowlphin

He actually didn't run, but jog. I think he was smart enough to be able to predict quite accurately how much time he would need and that it was not necessary for him to lose his style. 😁

@@Dowlphin He probably knew the limits of his endurance and went as fast as he could without exhausting himself, that's still better than the security team that just walks to their destination in the middle of their ship being boarded.

The best scifi ever. Holodeck is not just simulation. It created a match of Data in Moriarty who became real matter from pure energy. It enhances real aspects of the physical world.

0:40 you can tell this show was made in the 80s and 90s. Nowadays that would be considered a threatening gesture and he would have been removed from his duties and thrown in the brig.

Knowing what we know now about the speed and memory capacity of the human brain, the sheer fact he was abile to image his brain and store it on the storyboard mainframe of the ship shows a testimate to the hardware and memory capacity of the Enterprise D. My belief is that its technology prowess is vastly understated.

It was just the taskmanager priority overloaded, a few seconds more and the consoles had popped up "Barclay 2.0 not responding, do you want to wait or kill process" I'd hope the computer allows console access based on your admin privileges without the need to retype passwords all the time when saving the ship ;-)
